It is my pleasure to welcome you as a new citizen in our town and I am sure that you will soon feel happily at home here. In order to make the first steps in your new town slightly easier, we have drawn up this guide, which should help you answer the most important questions about living in Schwäbisch Gmünd. We have also dealt with the specific particulari- ties of our town and federal state, Baden-Württemberg. Should you have any questions which the town council can help you with, please contact the advisory staff at the immigration office, known as the Ausländeramt in German. They deal with immigration matters, asylum procedures, visa applications and letters of invitation for visitors.

I am more than happy to invite you to take part in a guided tour of the town, as this is the best way to settle down in your new hometown. You will receive a voucher for this when you register either at the town hall, immigration office or the district authorities.

I wish you a good start and a lovely time in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

Yours sincerely, Lord Mayor

Medical checks for children

In Germany, every child is entitled to eleven medical check-ups, which are covered by health insurance. These check-ups, known as the “U1 to J1 check-ups“, are com- pulsory in Baden-Württemberg. They help diagnose disorders and diseases from an early age, which could affect the normal, physical, mental, emotional and social development of your child. This means that a doctor will check whether your child is developing normally.

You can find all of the “U check-ups“ in the following table.
