PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Sammy Bergman MIKRA : FROM MEMORY TO INSPIRATION Our demanding familial, social, and communal responsibilities make finding inspiration very diIcult. Even when we have “free time,” we are often so mentally and emotionally drained that we lack the mind space to truly engage in activities intended to imbue our lives with meaning. The hours we spend connecting with our families and communing with God in prayer can become rote activities instead of inspirational experiences. The mitzvah of Mikra Bikkurim discussed in Parshat Ki Tavo presents an approach to finding inspiration in the mundaneness of our daily schedules. The Torah mandates that we place our Bikkurim, our first fruits of the seven species of Israel from the harvest, in a basket and transport them to the Temple. After arriving at the temple, we are commanded to recite several verses describing our national history. We describe our patriarch Jacob’s encounter with Lavan the Aramean, the servitude we experienced in Egypt, our redemption from Egypt, our entrance into the land of Israel, and declare our intention to thank God by presenting him with our first fruits. This recitation is known as Mikra Bikkurim. On a simple level, as the Ramban suggests, we recite Mikra Bikkurim in order to express our gratitude. However, the Sefer Hachinuch (Mitzvah 606), adds another dimension to the mitzvah. Imagine the feeling of satisfaction one experiences when harvesting their first fruits after enduring a physically draining agricultural season! In the experience of literally eating the fruits of their labor, one runs the risk of forgetting God, the ultimate source of material success. The physical action of bringing Bikkurim may not have provided the inspiration to break out of this mindset. Therefore, suggests the Chinuch, we not only bring the Bikkurim to the temple, but also perform Mikra Bikkurim. We verbally recall the kindness God has bestowed upon our nation, and upon ourselves. We inspire the recognition into our hearts around minds that our material success ultimately emanates from God’s kindness. Furthermore, suggests the Chinuch, the spiritual level we reach by filling our hearts with gratitude and praise to Hashem, makes us worthy of receiving his blessing for the next year as well. The mitzvah of Mikra Bikkurim can provide us with a method for imbuing our own lives with inspiration. We each have our own personal narratives, filled with stories of our successes and failures. If those memories remain tucked away in our minds, they become disconnected from our present reality. However, if we use the model of Mikra Bikkurim, by verbally recounting our own stories which we find most meaningful, and acknowledge Hashem’s role in our daily lives, our memories can fill our present lives with inspiration. May we internalize the message of Mikra Bikkurim , continue to retell our stories, and imbue each moment of our lives with meaning.
