Kriyat Shema should be recited after 8:41 pm this week. PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Jesse Shore THE LOVELY CHAOTIC TRAJECTORY OF TESHUVA We all suGer from a severe lack of omniscience. Hashem, in His wisdom, has refrained from endowing us with perfect knowledge of Creation. Even in our respected areas of expertise, we only know things partially, and while we may be dimly aware of many things (like what was discussed in today’s news cycle), there are infinitely many things that completely escape our notice (like the tectonic activity of an earth-like planet somewhere in the Andromeda galaxy, or the billionth billionth sum in the Fibonacci sequence). Given this extremely humbling state of aGairs, it can be surprising when people so casually assume that they have privileged knowledge as to what events truly influence their lives and, moreover, oGer confident explanations as to why they happen. Our parsha relates a sequence of apparently unrelated events as mitzvot. The sequence includes: (1) driving away a mother bird before taking her young; (2) making a protective enclosure around the roof of a house; and (3) sowing a vineyard without inter- breeding plants. It is here where Rashi introduces the famous principle of , that one good deed is a precursor to another (Devarim 22:8). Rashi also weaves a narrative, connecting the dots to plausibly explain how each mitzvah in the sequence gives rise to the next mitzvah. Left to our own imaginations, we could contrive our own ingenious explanations. Perhaps Rashi’s narrative, and the narratives of our own imaginations are lav davka (not intended to be exclusive or authoritative). What is important is the underlying principle. If every mitzvah is perceived as the precursor to another, then we are on a trajectory of following Hashem’s will. Even if our understanding or knowledge of events are far from complete, or even mistaken, what matters is that we more easily perceive the next opportunity to perform a mitzvah because we have adopted the outlook that life is about mitzvot. With the Yamim Noraim fast approaching, we can expand this understanding to Teshuva as well. Indeed, our ability to make amends, to refine our character, and to come closer to Hashem, is predicated on whether we adopt the perception that Teshuva is an ever present opportunity in our lives. Life can often be fraught with chaotic events, things that we cannot readily understand or explain, but once we adopt a perception that each event is an opportunity for Teshuva, then we set for ourselves a trajectory that leads to closeness to Hashem.

Rabbi Elihu AbbeAbbe, YU Kollel's new Sgan Rosh Beit Midrash, will give a PrePrePre-Pre ---MinchaMincha Shiur at 6:35 pm on the topic: “Paying Workers On Time: Halachic Decisions of Rabbi Asher Weiss.”
