He is actually a malach - an angel of G-d." The pages of this long-awaited book show why. It contains warm, personal portraits of towering geclolim who molded the American and Israeli Torah communities, of European and Sephardic Torah giants, of inspirational women and educators. This volume contains twenty-two biographies, including the Roshei Ha Yeshivas Rav and Rav Yaakov Kaminetsky; the chassidic leaders Rav Meir Shapiro and the Skulener Rebbe; the Sephardic sages Ribi Yaakov Abu-Hasira and Ribi Ezra Attiah; the authors of Menoras HaMaor and Aruch HaShulchan; and renowned Kotler and Kaplan. It pulsates with the stuff that transforms flesh-and-blood creatures into The Torah Profile - into angels in human form.

Also available are the newly reprinted first two volumes of this trilogy: The Torah Personality and The Torah World.

His remarks were widely disseminated. In fact, The New York Times devoted considerable coverage to the event. The title of his address was "Centrist Orthodoxy: Agenda and Vision, Successes and Failures.'' The Times report began: "Ultra-orthodox Jews, including Hasidim, have set the religious agenda for too long in both the United States and Israel, the president of Yeshiva University said Tuesday, calling on moderate Orthodox elements to reassert themselves.... "Dr. Lamm said the ultra-Orthodox has been 'powered by triumphalism,' which he defined as an attitude of, We are winning, therefore we are right.' " This was not his first time to have attacked the Orthodox right and not the first time that he has sought to rally "centrists" to action. Due to the public nature of his statement, his words should not pass without comment. As a step toward dispelling some of the wrong impressions that were created by his statement, The Jewish Observer presents Professor Aaron Twerski's OPEN LETTER TO DR. NORMAN LAMM

Her gates were the gates of Zion and the bounds of Halachah. She directed her praises to those whose love and support of Torah were as unlimited as her own. We have heard so many, that it sometimes seems as though nothing can move us anymore. And then we hear a heartbreaking story like this one: Reb Chaim S. was a Tai mid Chacham, head of a large family and proprietor of a successful business - until nine years ago. Then he developed a rare type of parkinson's disease. Without warning, his whole body would begin to shake violently and he would often fall to the ground, unable to control himself. It soon became impossible for him to run his business. He was forced to sell it and supported his family with the proceeds. Two years ago, Reb Chaim was struck again. During an attack, he fell and cracked his spine. The result was paralysis. A few months ago - for the first time in nine years- there was a glimmer of hope. The world famous Burke Institute in Westchester County informed Reb Chaim that an intensive program of therapy could partially alleviate the effects of his paralysis. The hospital stay would cost $600.00 A DAY - but it would remove part of the misery from a life that had been stricken with suffering, pain, and shame. Now, he is at Burke, but his money is gone. For nine years he had avoided the final degradation of needing the help of his fellow Jews; now he finally needs us. Those are the bare facts. They are so painful that not a single extra word is necessary. Reb Chaim needs our very generous help. Surely none of us will stand aside at a time like this. Please send as much as you possibly can without delay. In this merit may all be spared the agony of depending on the mercy of our fellow Jews.
