Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: ! ! Although (b.160A.D.) left the church formally just to his death forming a sect [many of whom were reconciled to the th church by St. Augustine in the 4 century], his early writings are a brilliant and beautiful exposition of what the disciples in the sec- ond century believed and held. One such work, “On Repentance” describes the nature of penitence and conversion both for one who is to be baptized and also for those who having been baptized have nevertheless lost their baptismal grace due to subsequent sin. Thus Tertullian: ! ! “We have escaped once. Let us not place ourselves in danger again, even though it seems that we shall again escape. Most men who are saved from shipwreck divorce both ship and sea from that time on, and they show their appreciation of the gift of God, that is, their , by remembering their peril. I praise their fear and I appreciate their timidity. They are unwilling, a second time, to burden the mercy of God. They are afraid that they may seem to trample under foot that which they have re- ceived. Assuredly it is with a wise solicitude that they avoid chancing a second time something which they have once learned to fear. Thus in checking their presumption they give proof of their fear, and man’s fear is God’s glory” (Tertullian, On Repent- ance, 7). ! ! In the early church sometimes even those who believed in Christ would postpone their for fear that having been reconciled to God, having been made a new creature, they would go back to their old ways and offend the majesty, mercy and justice of God. It was felt that if one sins post baptism, they in some way trampled upon the goodness and mercy of God, who had given them the power to overcome all temptations. Thus, famously we think of the Emperor Constantine who, although he converted to Christ Je- sus much earlier, waited until his deathbed in 337 to be baptized. ! ! What about those who unfortunately, due to sin, lose their original baptismal innocence and grace? How do they recover what was lost? Tertullian continues: ! ! “Whom are we to understand by that father? God, of course! No one is so much a father. No one is so devoted. Therefore He will take you back as His son, even though you will have wasted what He gave you. Even though you come back stripped of all things, He will receive you Nprecisely because you have come back. He will be happier over your return than over an- other’s self control, but only if you repent from the bottom of your heart, only if you contrast your hunger with the repletion of your father’s servants, only if you abandon the filthy herd of swine, only if you seek out your Father, even though He be of- fended, and say to Him: Father, I have sinned and I am no longer worthy to be called Thine. Confession lightens an offense as much as concealment aggravates it, for confession is counseled by satisfaction and concealment by impeni- tence” (Tertullian, On Repentance, 8). ! ! Jesus, like us in all things but sin, knows the weakness of humanity. After his resurrection but before his ascension, he gave to the apostles and their successors (bishops) and coworkers (priests) the capacity to not only preach the word which calls one to repent- ance but also to reconcile (either “first penance” baptism or “second penance” the and reconciliation). The priest has the gift and responsibility to serve humanity by reconciling them to God! This is done by baptism but also for those who have lost their baptismal grace due to sin by what we colloquially term “confession.” ! ! In our Lord’s pastoral ministry people would come to him to be unburdened and to have their sins forgiven. For those who have sinned post baptism, they experience this today in the sacrament of penance and reconciliation. The priest, as one who is con- formed to Jesus to continue his pastoral ministry, is called to serve as the instrument whereby people can receive the forgiveness of sin and be reconciled to God in just the same way they were two thousand years ago with the Lord himself. In confession the sinner speaks to God, but through the priest (he’s like a telephone). Through the priest the sinner receives the assurance their sins are forgiven and that they can begin anew. ! ! The elements of a good confession are: (1) an examination of conscience aided by the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, Pre- cepts of the Church, and other means guided by the light of the Holy Spirit; (2) true sorrow for having offended God; (3) the confes- sion of sin to the priest Nwith specificity and directness: indicating the species (kind) of sin and the number of times it has been committed; (4) accepting the penance assigned by the priest with a firm purpose of amendment to sin no more; and finally (5) the absolution by the priest. After a good confession, the soul is restored in friendship to God and is given a fresh start. ! ! Fr. Ratzinger (later Benedict XVI) while preaching on the occasion of a first Mass of Thanksgiving in 1962 said of confession: ! ! “T he reception of the sacrament of Penance has become less frequent. But that changes nothing of the fact that sin exists even today and that we need forgiveness even today. What does it mean if we know that man can repent. That now and then in the course of the year he is obliged, not to shift blame onto others, but to reflect on himself. To accuse himself. To see and confess his sin. To acknowledge he is guilty. That he has made mistakes. And what does it mean to know that there is for- giveness. That I can make a new beginning. That there is an authority that can say: Go, your sins are forgiven. From God’s forgiveness, however, we ourselves should learn again and again to forgive, for a world without forgiveness could only be- come a world of mutual destruction. The privilege of pronouncing the word of forgiveness is one of the most difficult and most beautiful tasks of the priest: often it is oppressive to be the place where all the filth of mankind is laid down. And, nevertheless, it is at the same time an activity full of hope: to know that everything can be transformed, that a person is allowing himself to be trans- formed.” ! ! May the Lord bring to fulfillment the good work he has begun in us. !! ! !!!!!!!!!! In Christ, Fr. Turner ! 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time ! ! ! September 15, A Walk Through Genesis !
