ADULT FAITH FORMATION Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Can we say too much about prayer? In the today the Lord tells us, “Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:19)

Our Creator desires and commands us to love and honor him above all things as is right and just, and to love others as we love ourselves. He gives us a choice to be united to Him and receive His grace, which is a sharing of His life within us. We receive God’s grace through the sacraments and prayer. Prayer is the pathway to union with God and helps us grow closer to Him. It makes us better people and helps us gain inner peace. We obtain all good things that we ask for in prayer that are in accord with God’s will. Jesus said, “Ask, and it shall be given you” (Matthew 7:7). St. reminds us that prayer is also necessary for , and that without prayer, we cannot resist temptation and keep the commandments.

Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” We can do nothing apart from Him. Nothing.

There are so many ways to pray. There is adoration (praising God), contrition (sorrow for sins), petition (asking for things and help) and thanksgiving (giving thanks). Remember, prayer is lifting our mind and heart to God. It can be a simple as speaking to God as we would to a friend in a conversation. It can be saying a vocal prayer as in the Our Father. It can be meditating (pondering) on the Word of God in Scripture, like in Lectio Divina. It can be praying the Rosary as Mary asked in her many apparitions.

Prayer is a communication between you and God. In preparation for prayer, choose a time and place for minimal outer distractions. Try to set aside all other concerns or make them part of your prayer by placing them in God’s hands. Take a moment to focus yourself, calling to mind that you are in the presence of God, who knows and sees all and is present everywhere including within you by His grace. “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16).

Knowing all this, we must ask ourselves, do we pray enough? Do we take Jesus at His word that when we gather together He is in our midst? We must begin by “willing” our belief in God. Pray for the gift of faith. Choose someone to pray for and lift them up to the Lord. Pray for your church community and the pastors and deacons. We should and must pray often. It is our duty as believers. Pray. Your Sister, Kim Lehman—Adult Faith Formation REGISTER NOW
