There is an element of the paradoxical inherent even in official expressions of the Church 's attitude . As a result of the creation of the post-Cons tantinian State Church, the ecclesias tical hierarchy found an apparent solution, epitomized by St. Augus tine 's teaching on the "jus t war," which was as elegan t as it was dan ge rous . -

CLERGY PERSONNEL MANUAL ARCHDIOCESE OF PORTLAND PREFACE TO THE 2014 EDITION OF THE CLERGY PERSONNEL MANUAL On December 8, 1979 Archbishop Cornelius Power promulgated the Clergy Personnel Manual. This Manual was the product of extensive study and consultation by the Clergy Personnel Board and finally a vote of the entire presbyterate. Since the original promulgation of the Manual, some chapters have been revised. This edition prints all the chapters in a uniform format. The organization and position titles within the Pastoral Center have changed. This edition references positions of offices that coincide with our current Pastoral Center organization. PERCEPTIONS JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS March - May 1998 Volume III - Number 1 THE FENER GREEK PATRIARCHATE A. SUAT BİLGE Dr. A. Suat Bilge is Professor of International Relations and Ambassador (retired). A controversy concerning the Fener Greek Patriarchate started in Turkey in 1997. It was stated that the Patriarchate could be used both for and against the interests of Turkey. On the one hand, it was claimed that the Patriarchate had intentions to establish itself as an ecumenical church and become a state like the Vatican; that the Orthodox world was trying to gain power in Turkey. On the other hand, some people stated that Turkey could benefit from the prestigious position of the Patriarchate and suggested an improvement in its status. First of all, I want to stress that the Patriarchate no longer enjoys the importance it once possessed in Greek-Turkish relations. Today, the Patriarchate is trying to become influential in Turkish-American relations. The Fener Greek Patriarchate is a historical religious institution. After the division of the Roman Empire, it became the church of the Byzantine Empire and obtained the status of an ecumenical church. With the collapse of the Byzantine Empire, the Patriarchate became the church of the Greeks living within the Ottoman Empire. Besides its functions as a religious institution, the Patriarchate was also granted the right to act as a ministry of Greek affairs by Mehmet II. He granted increased authority and privileges to the Patriarch. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the Fener Greek Patriarchate became the church of the Greeks living within the Republic of Turkey. -

Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th. -

This booklet is written especially for the laymen since he rarely has opportunity to read church periodicals for an understanding of what has happened in the Episcopal Church in the past l5 years. To simplify matters we'll hereafter use several acronyms, the first of which is PECUSA (Protestant Episcopal Church in U.S.A.) Most of us are aware that the "troubles" (as the Irish call their revolutionary problems) came to a head at the 1976 Minneapolis General Convention, although there had been departures from PECUSA as far back as 1873. The purpose is to tell you about it without any theological gobbledegook and with as few judgmental comments as possible. The original intent of this project was to describe the origins of the seven better-known separated churches; it was soon discovered that there were neady fifty, most of which are small entities located in the southern states. The search for information showed a lot of cross- patching and cross-referencing, so in order to avoid stumbling all over ourselves we decided to confine this report to the seven.
