Director of Education: Chairman of the Board: Dr Ann Lees The Most Revd & Rt Hon Dr , , Diocesan Board of Education Every Church of Diocese has by law a Diocesan Board of Education, constituted in accordance with the 1991 Diocesan Boards of Education Measure. This Measure charges the Board with the promotion of education in the Diocese consistent with the faith and practice of the and, specifically, with the promotion of religious education and worship in schools.

North East and Cumbria Teaching Awards. The Board is chaired by the Most Revd & Rt Hon Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, and currently has 15 elected and appointed members who represent the 3 archdeaconries and have relevant experience in the field of education. It has 2 committees: the Property, Planning and Resources Committee, that deals with property and trust matters, staffing and finance; and the School Support, Mission and Training Committee, that deals with all schools policy matters, monitors school inspection reports and the Board’s support for schools and parishes through its Service Level Agreement and training programmes. The Board has recently been reconstituted to equip it better to meet the demands placed upon it in the context of education today.

The Board is a member of DBE Services Ltd, a company providing educational services to schools in the Dioceses of Blackburn, Carlisle, , , and York. Church Schools in the Diocese

There are 123 Church of England primary schools in the Diocese, of which 19 are Aided, three Foundation and the remainder Controlled. As in all 43 dioceses of the Church of England, primaries outnumber secondaries. Three of our four secondaries, in Hull and York, are now Academies, with our remaining secondary in Stockton due to convert to Academy status in the near future.

The geographical area covered by the Diocese is extensive and the schools come within seven Local Authorities. These are:

• City of York • East Riding of • Kingston-upon-Hull • • Redcar & Cleveland • Stockton-on-Tees

There are no Church schools in Middlesborough, though this too is within the Diocese, and the Church supports education there in many important ways. The Board and its schools work closely with these LAs, Children’s Services and other partners to serve all young people in the Diocese, within and beyond formal education. Support for Church Schools and Church-affiliated schools

A team of Education Officers supports and advises schools and parishes and represents the Diocesan Board of Education within the Diocese and in the Local Authority context. The Director (Ann Lees) and Assistant Director (Viv Todd) are responsible for school organisational matters and liaison with Local Authorities, National Society and the Department for Education (DFE). They also represent the Diocese on a number of statutory bodies. Key aspects of their work are advising and assisting schools on matters relating to staffing, head teacher appointments, trusts, funding, governance and school development.

A team of Education and School Development Advisers (Olivia Seymour, Liz Foster, Linda Hodson and Penny Heptonstall) support schools in the areas of Religious Education, Collective Worship and the development of the Christian ethos, particularly in preparation for and following SIAS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools).

The Administrator (Anita Ranyell) and the School Buildings Officer (Simon Quartermaine) handle foundation governor appointments and all building related matters respectively.

However, the Board’s officers take a team approach to supporting schools, their staff and governors. The whole team also works with clergy, parishes, deaneries and archdeaconries to support and promote ministry among children and young people. All members of the team are always ready to offer help or advice and can be contacted at Diocesan House.

In September 2008 an Affiliated Schools scheme was introduced in the Diocese, which is designed to provide an opportunity for community schools that appreciate and value their links with their local parish church to have this recognized in a more formal manner. A separate explanatory leaflet is available.
