Monitoring of the site strip and excavation of the foundation trench systems revealed the location of a former garden pond. Monitoring of the foundation systems revealed a simple sequence of stratigraphy consisting of tarmac and hardcore which overlaid a layer of dark grey-brown silt clay, which in turn overlaid the natural. No archaeological features were identified. Brick and tile dated from the 19th century was recovered from the layer of hardcore along with a sherd of post-medieval glazed red earthenware. A preceding geophysical survey had identified one area of particular interest at the east end of the proposed pipeline. This area produced several Romano-British features and a double Bronze Age burial; the rest of the pipeline route proved to be of a low archaeological significance. Beneath the topsoil, a layer interpreted as made-ground was exposed, possibly associated with the late Victorian/early modern activities at the site. This sealed a series of alluvial deposits, formed by warping to improve the fertility of the land. Later post-medieval and early modern brick and tile was recovered from these layers.
