Having recently returned from a very sunny family holiday in Spain it is hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner. Where has this year gone? My mother in law used to say that as you get older time passes more quickly and we all used to laugh at her, but now we know she was right! Karin and I recently attended the National Council Meeting in Bedfordshire. This is an opportunity to meet with other Chairmen and Treasurers as well as the main Board and take part in discussions about the future of the organisation. On this occasion too it was a chance to see our new National Chairman, Janice Langley, in action! She has a clear vision for the future of the organisation and is particularly keen to meet members around the country. Therefore next year, the main Board will be embarking on a series of conferences throughout the country entitled Inspiring Women – Working Together. Invitations from National will be arriving in the New Year! I do hope you have all enjoyed your WI year whether you’ve been busy organising and/or participating in events. I would especially like to thank the Trustees for their hard work and support and we all look forward to seeing you at some time in 2014. Sue Hawney Membership Team I’m happy to report that we have been successful in our application for a second Centenary Grant from Na- tional. We applied for £1000 and were awarded the full amount! The money will be used to purchase an- other freestanding banner, and new display boards, which, like the banners will be available to hire for your WI events. We can use £250 towards training another Adviser and the remainder will help towards the cost of opening another WI. Jean Mumby from Thornton Curtis WI has agreed to become an Adviser and will start her training in Janu- ary 2014. Good luck Jean and thank you! We also opened, in October, a new WI in Killingholme. There was an enthusiastic response to the first meet- ing and a committee of 7 was easily formed. So good luck to them too. A happy Christmas and New Year to all our WIs from the Membership Team. Sue Hawney A.C.W.W. Amutor Calvary Women’s Agriculture Project What a fantastic response!! Together you have raised the wonderful amount of £926 for the Sierra Leone project. Well done everyone and a great big “Thank You”!! Because of your efforts in raising this money, 120 women and their families in the Taiama Kori community in Sierra Leone will benefit from the production of rice, groundnut and pineapple crops. Since they began cultivating their “farm” they have encountered many challenges such as a lack of tools, a hired tractor which decided not to work, no means of transporting materials to their site and a very heavy rainy season. But, because of ACWW’s support and our money, tools were made by a local blacksmith, a tractor was hired from another community, and local transport was hired to move materials to the farm. The Amutor Calvary Women have been able to buy pest and rodent insecticides and fertilizers to protect and improve crop growth. They have also been able to build a hut on site to house workers whilst they are working on the farm. They are still in great need of adequate storage facilities but hopefully because of ACWW’s backing, this problem may soon be resolved The whole budget for their project is just £1,600 which seems to us a very small amount but it is a lifeline to this community. For the first time in their lives these women are be- coming self-reliant and feeling the joy of being able to provide for their families, thanks in the main to your efforts in supporting ACWW’s funding. Because of the remoteness of this community, communication and reporting remains a challenge, but I will keep you all up-dated as progress reports become available through ACWW. Marjorie Grisdale . Hibaldstow Institute is celebrating it’s 90 th Anniversary this year. Rather than hold one big celebration, we decided to hold several events throughout the year. The year started with a beautiful cake at our March meeting. To highlight just how long 90 years is, a series of information boards were put together showing world events and Inspirational Women since 1923; this was on display during the Hibaldstow Open Gardens Event in June when we were visited by Radio Lincolnshire’s Pirate Gold programme. We continued our celebrations in September with a speaker from Normanby Hall who talked about Evening and Nightwear through the Ages and showed us examples from their collection. Several friends from Kirton in Lindsey and Broughton WI’s attended at our invitation. Our year will end with a fun quiz based on the 90 years history we have discovered in our research and we also hope to donate a lasting memento to the village. The photograph shows our longest serving member Mrs Kath Hall, who has been a member of our Insti- tute for 60 years having joined in 1953. Also included are other members celebrating the anniversary. Denman News At the Ambassadors’ Conference at Denman last month, it was good to hear that things are improving and that the NFWI Board are 100% behind Denman. September was a very busy month and it is look- ing very positive for the rest of this year and next year’s bookings are already on the way to meeting their targets. Preparations are under way for the Centenary celebrations at Denman so I will pass on details as I receive them. There is a new brochure out with lots of exciting courses and many new tu- tors, so if you don’t have one, there are some in the Brigg Office and you can see everything on the Den- man website. Now a date for your diary, Denman has been booked for a three-day Federation visit in 2015 from Friday 29th May to Sunday 31st May and there will be seven courses to choose from. Full details will be sent to your WI early next year. Don’t forget the Jam Festival and Christmas Fair on the 7th and 8th December, and if you want to celebrate in style there is the New Year House Party—30th December to 2nd January.
