Notes for William Johnson Wharwick: In White's Directory of Hull, 1882, on pg 327, the first entry on the page is "Wharwick W. J. foreign yeast merchant, butter factor and broker, flour and egg importer, Wood's lane, Cogan street; h 72 Coltman street". On the next page, the third and fourth entries are "Whittick Thos. (Thos. & Son); h 39 Cogan street" and "Whittick Thomas & Son, yeast merchants, &c. Scarborough street, and Wood's lane" Under the heading "Yeast merts. and importers" on pg 464, are two entries: "Wharwick W. J. Wood's ln.Cogan st.H." and "Whittick Thomas & Son, Scarborough street, and 10 Wood's lane, H." While Jane Ann's parents aren't given in the IGI entry, it is my guess that Thomas Whittick is her father and William married into the business. Page 1 of 25 Thursday, 29 January 2015 Generation 1 (con't) Whittick is her father and William married into the business. In the 1899 and 1913 Kelly's Directory, under "Private Residents" is "Wharwick William Johnson, Rydal villa, Southfield". Thomas Whittick is on Wood's lane in the 1823 Baine's Directory & Gazetteer of the County of , Vol II, North & East Ridings. Whittick Thomas, yeast agent is on Wood's lane in 1857 Post Office Directory of the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire 1857. Cogan Street today appears to be roughly parallel to Ferens Way (A1079) and crosses Rd. (A63). The highest street numbers are closest to the Estuary. Generation 2

Notes for Susannah Topham: Living with her mother and step-father in Weaverthorpe in 1851.

Notes for Matthew Boak: Kelly's Directory of the North and East Ridings Yorkshire, with the City of York, 1893: In Malton: "Boak Matthew & Son, photographers, Market place" In Pickering: "Boak & Sons, printers & booksellers, Market place" In Bridlington Quay: "Boak & Sons, photographers, 5 Promenade" In Great Driffield: "Boak Matthew & Sons, photographers, 57 Middle st. south" I think that Matthew and his 2 sons have opened businesses in Malton and Bridlington Quay as photographers and that probably one of them operates each of the locations. The printers in Pickering are probably another family entirely. The Bridlington and Quay Gazette is at 6 Promenade. In 1881, 5 Promenade is occupied by George Atkin, a fruiterer and his wife, Florence, and daughter, Elizabeth. Page 2 of 25 Thursday, 29 January 2015 Generation 2 (con't) daughter, Elizabeth. In 1881, Market Place, New Malton is loaded with professionals. The Temperance Hotel at this address is kept by Mary J Hall, the wife of Edwin Hall, a photographer. Their daughter, Elizabeth is also a photographer. This is probably one of his photographs: http://www.beckislemuseum.co.uk/gallery/work/workers_5.shtml

In 'Kelly's Directory of the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire, 1913, part 1', under photographers, there were 2 entries: "Boak Johnson, Pier studio, Coatham, " and "Boak Miss M. 15 Promenade, Bridlngtn"

Pioneers in portrait photography

Updated on the 07 June 2007 13:44

Published 07/06/2007 13:43

Most of the numerous improvements in the science of photography, and its prominent developments from an artistic point of view, were contempory of the old-established firm of Messrs Matthew Boak & Sons, whose connection with the profession dated back to 1859, when the practice of portrait taking was performed on exceedingly primitive lines.

Constantly keeping pace with each successive improvement, the firm won a high reputation for the expert and artistic manner in which each class of portrait was executed.

The speciality of Messrs Boak & Son's business was children's portraiture, in which their long experience in the difficult and delicate art of posing 'was effectual in obtaining the most pleasing and satisfactory results'.

The business spread from Bridlington to Driffield and Malton.

The Boaks went in thoroughly for every branch of their art, and whether it be views of the surrounding neighbourhood, personal portraits or portraits of friends, representations of favourite animals, or spectacular residences, they were willing to, and equally capable of supplying the need.

They finished their work in platinotype, carbon, silver, or any of the many processes that became popular in their time.

At George Street House, Driffield, enlargements to coloured photos were supplied if desired, and the pictures were mounted and handsomely framed, if their owners wished it.

Mr Matthew Boak was a native of Pickering, where his father was a printer and bookseller. His mother was a Miss Susannah Robinson of Weaverthorpe.

No doubt it was in his father's business that Matthew began engraving and painting with oils.

At his death in 1906 Matthew was survived by five of his children, William, Johnson, Charles, Frances and Mary Jane.

Driffield Times 1874

Page 3 of 25 Thursday, 29 January 2015 Generation 2 (con't) Driffield Times 1874

In the Driffield Times of Saturday, February 21 , 1874, Mr Boak invited those who really wished a good portrait executed with care to visit his Driffield Photographic Studio and Fancy Repository, near the Buck Hotel, Middle Street. Portraits enlarged or reduced, daguerrotypes, glass portraits, water colour and oil paintings. Carte-de-Visite were offered from 6s to 10s 6d per doz.

The daguerreotype was central to the work of the early photographers. Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre was the inventor of the French daguerreotype process, as advertised by Matthew Boak. It was a photographic process, used especially for portraits, and was one of the earliest processes of the art (1839).

The daguerreotype was sold as the logical successor to the long established miniature painting, and as a result of its initial high price, it anyway sold to the same type of customer.

In photography's earliest days, the dark room (a term first mentioned in the original daguerreotype patent filed by Miles Berry in on Daguerre's behalf) was the centre of all the manipulative activities both before and after exposure.

The basis of the daguerreotype was a sheet of silver-coated copper and the success of the image was dependent upon how carefully the copper plate had been cleaned before silvering. The importance of that stage led to a reluctance of photographers initially to trust commercially silvered plates.

The silvering was achieved by suspending the plate in a solution of silver chloride dissolved in potassium cyanide. When the daguerreotype plate was suspended in this solution and connected to a terminal of a galvanic battery, the other terminal being connected to a small sheet of silver, and even if a pre-silvered plate was used, this resulted in a marked thickening of the silver coating.

Once coated, the silver surface was cleaned, buffed and polished to achieve the highly reflected mirror surface usually associated with the daguerreotype.

The polish was achieved in several stages. After this the plate, now light-sensitive, was ready for exposure in the camera. Exposure was commenced by the removal of a lens cap. Daguerre's early images required exposure as long as 15 minutes, but by the time commercial studio portraiture was well established, exposure had generally been reduced to less than one minute.

Even so, architectural and landscape daguerreotypes, an important part of Matthew Boak's business, faithfully recorded only figures which had either been carefully posed or were seated throughout the exposure.

An artist to the end

Published on the 04 July 2007, 11:41

Retired Driffield schoolteacher and local historian Wally Simpkin concludes his three-part series on the life and times of the extraordinary phtographer Matthew Boak.

IN the earliest years of the daguerreotype, the photographic portrait was packaged in exactly the same frames and cases which had been manufactured for miniature paintings.

Initially, the one aspect of the photograph which failed to match up to the miniature painting was the absence of colour. Colouring daguerreotypes became an increasingly popular requirement of the image buying public, and several approaches to the task evolved.

Page 4 of 25 Thursday, 29 January 2015 Generation 2 (con't) The most widespread technique involved carefully painting those areas of the plate to be coloured with a thin layer of gum arabic, so thin as to be invisible, and then letting it dry. The artist, often a miniature painter as Matthew Boak was, would than apply the colour, using dry powder pigments and a dry soft sable brush with a fine point. The gum was first rendered tacky by breathing lightly on it, ensuring that the pigment powder would stick and that the surface remained very delicate.

The whole process was carried out with the aid of a magnifying glass, and the best colourists were so good that their work showed little or no evidence of brush strokes.

Central to the success of the colourist was the ability to mix realistic colours and to apply the essential tints, tones and shading necessary to make the colour lifelike. Done badly, the effect was terrible, but in the jockey, coloured by Matthew Boak, the effect is surprisingly realistic. The flesh tones applied to the faces and hands, and the rouged effects on cheeks, were the result of considerable experience both in colour mixing and application.

Clothing was not just coloured but shaded, and jewellery was highlighted with either gold leaf or a gold paint applied with considerable care.

There is no doubt that Matthew Boak saw himself as an artist and he continued to offer 'traditional' painted portraits as an alternative to a photograph.

By the time the Carte-de-Visite craze was in full swing, Boak & Sons offered to enlarge or reduce photographic portraits, and offered to colour them in every size from the tiny image, used in a brooch or a locket, up to life-size portraits.

For the Carte-de-Visite, the colourist used water-based dyes which penetrated the surface of the print and gave a relatively permanent coloured finish. Owing to the sepia on cream of the albumen print used for all cartes, the colourist had very little to do to the skin tones to make them look good. A slight waning of the cream/sepia skin of the print produced a surprisingly realistic colour.

Matthew Boak captured stunning landscapes, portraits of people and buildings, and supplemented his studio work by the production and sale of postcards. The postcards alone are remarkable, covering local events as well as local scenes.

The popular holiday postcard took many years to develop. In 1870 the Post Office issued the first plain cards with a pre-printed stamp on one face. In 1894 they allowed other publishers' cards to be sent through the mail with an attached adhesive halfpenny stamp.

Demand grew rapidly and in 1895 a new size of postcard was permitted called the court card, but there was little room for an illustration. In 1899 a new card, measuring five and a half inches by three and a half inches, became the standard format, but it was not until 1902 that the divided back came into being, with the address and message on one face, and a full-size illustration on the other.

Matthew Boak for many years, was a deacon of the Congregational Church at Driffield and his daughter, Mary Jane, was also a member. Matthew died shortly after his retirement in Scarborough, on March 13, 1906.

Probate of his will, rated August 8, 1904, was granted to his son-in-law, Walter Germanius Shaw, photographer, of Eastwood, Camberley, Surrey, and Mr T Topham Cass, cabinet maker, of 9 Road, Hull.

Matthew Boak left to his daughter, Mary Jane Boak, his share and interest in the business of a photographer, carried on by her at Bridlington Quay, then occupied by her, at valuation.

Mary Jane carried on her father's business in Bridlington until she was succeeded by Mr W Foster Brigham in 1919.

Page 5 of 25 Thursday, 29 January 2015 Generation 2 (con't) Mary Jane resided in Bridlington until shortly before her death in 1941, aged 76 years.

Her funeral arrangements at Driffield were made by Mr W H Berriman and she was buried in Driffield Cemetery, where her name was added to the gravestone of her father, Matthew Boak.

PICTURES: When Mary Jane Boak died in 1938 after having taken over her father Matthew's business, her name was added to the family gravestone in Driffield Cemetery.

Matthew Boak expanded into the new market for postcards with this photograph of Hall.

Page 6 of 25 Thursday, 29 January 2015 Generation 2 (con't)

It's probably Moses living with his mother and step-father in Weaverthorpe in 1851. The index indicates his age at 45, but it should be 15.

In the History, Gazetteer and Directory of Lincolnshire, 1856 and the P.O. Directory of Lincolnshire for 1861, there is a Mrs. Jane Topham living at "Upgate" in Louth. The P.O. Directory of Lincoln for 1868 shows Mrs Topham at 88 Upgate. She seems to be gone from White's History, Gazetteer and Directory of Lincolnshire, 1872.

In Kelly's Directory of N & E Ridings of Yorkshire, 1893 (Part 1, places), Moses is a farmer at High Bonwick, one of 2 farms in Bonwick, .

In the 1899 Kelly's Hull Directory, pages 553-555 are for . Moses Topham is on the Parish Council and a farmer at Mill Farm.

In 1913, Mrs. Emily Topham is on 9 Albion Road, Bridlington (Kelly's Directory of N & E Ridings, part 1). This was in the listings for boarding houses.

Probably another Moses Topham, but in the Directory of Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield,... 1866, on pg 554, under "Bradford Directory" is " Topham Moses, spinner and manufacturer, Cross lane mill; h 163 High street" and on pg 601, under "Bradford worsted manufacturers", is "Topham Moses, Fawcett Holme mill"

In 1871, Prudence Carter, aged 22, born Louth, is living with the family as a Draper's Asst. Frances is not with the family. In 1881, Bertha and Florence are not with the family. They are boarding in Louth at 2 George St. with Harriet J Carter, who seems to run a boarding house, but "no Occupation" is given. Mary A Tiley and Fanny Pridmore are also boarders. In 1891, only Francis, Edgar and Harold are at home. Emily Florence and Jessie are boarders at 23 Enginegate in Louth with Mary Tiley and Harriet J Carter. Is it possible that Harriet is Emily's sister? They are of a similar age and Edgar's middle name is Carter. There is a St. James' School at Enginegate for girls and infants. In 1896, John J Browne is the resident at 23 Enginegate (Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire, 1896).

Notes for Emily Carter: Her surname is most likely Carter, since two daughters were with a family of that name in 1881 and they had a servant of that name in 1871. Then Emily Carter is the only Emily being married in the same quarter as Moses Topham. In Kelly's "Directory of the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire, 1913", there is an entry: "Topham Emily (Mrs.), boarding house, 9 Albion road" in the Bridlington alphabetical, commercial section, with a similar entry under trades in the boarding house section.
