NICOLS VENTURES INTO HOLLAND FOR THE FIRST TIME
The country is famous for its canals which give you access to so many wonderful things. Think tulips, windmills and delicious cheeses but you’ll also find beautiful towns and villages, art and history museums and national parks packed with nature. Natural waters are perfect for watersports and of course we couldn’t talk about Holland without mentioning bikes! Nicols new base is at KERKDRIEL and is in the ideal location for exploring some of the following great places...
EXPLORE THE CITY OF AMSTERDAM Now the largest city in Holland, Amsterdam originated as a small and simple fishing village named Amstel and dates back to the 17th cen- tury. Its trade exchanges with the rest of the world allowed extensive economic and cultural growth making it the city you find today. Amsterdam is surrounded by and divided up by canals and has many tourist attractions. Choose from the many art museums (including the famous Van Gogh museum), history and science interest points, colourful streets that are home to shops and terraces and of course a lively nightlife and the famous red light district. CRUISE IN THE HEART OF BIESBOSCH NATIONAL PARK Our base at Kerkdriel offers access to cruising on calm waters making it ideal for first-time boaters. The clean waters in this region are also ideal for swimming or fishing. Fans of flora and fauna will particularly love the Biesbosch National Park – one of the biggest in Holland and recognised as a wetland of international importance and protected by the EU Habitat and Birds Directives as a ‘Natura 2000’ area.
SAY CHEESE WITH A VISIT TO GOUDA It’s possible to moor your Nicols boat just a 10 minute walk from the Town Hall square at Gouda. In addition to the famous cheese, there are many other charming discoveries within the old town including the Sint-Jans church and its famous stained glass window, markets and bustling shopping streets.
ENJOY A MAASTRICHT TREAT A cruise heading south from Kerkdriel will take you to Maastricht, a city known as the origin of the European Union. Maastricht is a beautiful city – culture and history mix perfectly with trendy designer boutiques.
