Mu —Mathematics Honor Society

Dear Scorpion,

The purpose of this is to let you know of the requirements to be invited to join the inaugural NBHS chapter of , Mathematics Honor Society.

What is Mu Alpha Theta? Mu Alpha Theta is a national high school and two-year college mathematics honor society founded in 1957 to promote scholarship in mathematics and establish math as an integral part of high school education (Source: https://mualphatheta.org/history).

Here are several benefits of being a Mu Alpha Theta member: • Be officially recognized for your mathematical achievement • Be eligible to apply for awards that further recognize excelling in mathematics (https://mualphatheta.org/page/awards) • Advance your learning of mathematics beyond course content by participating in math contests (https://mualphatheta.org/contest) and other to be announced club activities • Be eligible to apply for Mu Alpha Theta scholarships (https://mualphatheta.org/muat_scholarships)

How do I get invited? Invitation is based on having completed Math I, II and III. Members of the NBHS Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta will need to meet the following criteria:

1. At least a 3.0 GPA in their math courses. 2. Have completed, or be in enrolled in, a math course beyond Math III. 3. Submit the completed application via email to Mrs. Weigold.

What next? Complete the application that is posted on the NBHS Math Department website. Your math grades will be confirmed by Mrs. Weigold and then you will be notified if your application has been approved.

Then what? If your application is approved, you will be given a set of written rules and expectations that you must follow so that you know what is required to be a member in good standing. If you agree to accept your membership, you will be required to pay a $15 registration fee that covers the national registration and chapter expenses. Details of how these funds will be collected will come once we return to school.

If you have questions, please email Mrs. Weigold at [email protected]

Sincerely, Mrs. Weigold NBHS MAT Advisor
