Constitution Eta Mu Sigma National Honor Society 02-27-2018 Preamble The Eta Mu Sigma National Honor Society is established to recognize and honor those individuals in the Majors and Minors in the Aviation curriculum who have, through scholarship and outstanding achievement, been a credit to their college. The primary functions of the society are to stimulate and encourage professional development through high academic performance, develop spiritual and intellectual leadership skills among society members, and provide a medium of communication between individuals in the industry and members of the society. The mission of the Society is to promote service in the community. Article I. Name and Affiliations Section 1. The name of the society will be Eta Mu Sigma National Honor Society. It may be referred to plainly as the Society or Eta Mu Sigma. Section 2. The organization represents students in the Aviation Curriculum. Section 3. The Symbol of the Society will have the form depicted in Appendix A. This symbol may be utilized only by members of the Society. It will be utilized only in conjunction with the Society’s purposes and sanctioned events. Section 4. The Seal of the Society will have the form depicted in Appendix B. This Seal may be utilized only by members of the Society. It will be utilized only in conjunction with the Society’s purposes and sanctioned events. Section 5. The colors of the society will be Blue and White. Section 6. Chapters will be named after their respective schools. 1 Constitution & By Laws Eta Mu Sigma National Honor Society 02-27-2018 Article II. Purpose Section 1. Eta Mu Sigma recognizes and honors those individuals in the Aviation Curriculum who have through scholarship, integrity and outstanding achievement, been a credit to their college and community. Section 2. The purposes for which Eta Mu Sigma is organized are exclusively educational within the meaning of Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 or the corresponding provision of any future United States Internal Revenue Law. Section 3. The purpose for which Eta Mu Sigma is convened is to work towards bettering the community through service. Article III. Membership Section 1. Non-Discrimination a. Membership is restricted to regularly enrolled university students, faculty, and staff. No university student may be denied membership on the basis of race, sex, religion, national origin, color, age, disability, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or veteran status as outlined in the university Policy Regarding Prohibited Harassment of Students. Section 3. Grades of Membership a. Students who are degree candidates in the majors and minors of the Aviation Curriculum are eligible for Active membership as prescribed in Section 4 of this Article. b. An Active member of the Society will automatically become an Alumni member upon graduation. Section 4. Qualifications of Active Membership a. To be considered for membership, a student must have completed 9 credit hours of college work in the aviation department. b. Students must have a 3.0 GPA within the aviation department to be eligible for membership. c. In addition to scholarship, candidates for membership must have shown qualities of high moral character, an active interest in aviation and an interest in the Society. d. Students who are no longer pursuing a major or minor in the aviation curriculum forfeit their Active Membership. Section 5. Voting on Candidates for Active Membership a. The Chapter President will conduct the elections. b. All votes will remain secret. c. Voting will be done by Active members only. d. A three-fourths vote of the active members present is required for the election of eligible students. Section 6. Voting on Candidates for Associate Membership a. The Chapter President will conduct the elections. b. All votes will remain secret. c. Voting will be done by Active and Associate Members. d. A unanimous vote of the Active and Associate members present will be required for election of Associate members. Section 7. Induction Ceremony a. All members should be inducted into the Society with a dignified ceremony. At no time will any inductee be subject to practices harmful to their person, or be required to do anything that may damage their dignity. 3 Constitution & By Laws Eta Mu Sigma National Honor Society 02-27-2018 b. All Members will be provided a Certificate of Membership with the name and insignia of the Society signed by the current officers of the Society. Section 8. Discipline of Members a. Members may be Disciplined by the Chapter for: i. Two unexcused absences of mandatory events or meetings. ii. Failure to carry out assigned duties. iii. Failure to maintain academic standards as stipulated by the Chapter. iv. Behavior unbefitting a member of the Society. b. Suspension or expulsion of a member from the Society may be initiated by the Chapter President and confirmed by a three- fourths vote of the active members. If the student requiring discipline is the Chapter President, the Faculty Advisor may initiate proceedings. Section 9. Voting eligibility a. To be eligible to vote on matters of the Society a member must be: i. An Active Member or Associate Member in good standing with the society. ii. In attendance of the voting procedure. iii. Have paid Chapter Dues in full. Article IV. Officers Section 1. Officer Positions a. The Officers of the Society will be President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Additional officers may be introduced pending their necessity to the organization. These officers will make up the Executive Committee along with the Faculty Advisor. b. Officers will perform duties and maintain the following Chapter records: i. Minutes of the Chapter Meetings ii. Contact Information of Active, Alumni and Associate Members of the Chapter vi. And an Itemized Account of Chapter Properties Section 2. Officer Eligibility a. To be eligible to run for an officer position one must have been an Active member for one academic year. To be eligible for President the member must have previously been an officer of the Society and currently be an Active member of the Society. To be eligible for Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer the member must be an Active member of the Society. Section 3. Terms of Office a. The term of office is one academic year upon election. b. Officers elected due to unscheduled vacancies should have the option to be re-elected and serve a full term. Section 4. Officer Vacancies a. If the President’s position suddenly becomes vacant the Vice President will assume duties and call a meeting of elections with the members. b. If an Officer’s term is to become vacant before their intended end date an election must be held to fill the vacancy for the remainder of their term. Section 5. President a. It shall be the duties of the President to call and preside over all meetings of the Chapter; appoint and serve as ex-officio member to all standing and special committees, receive all matters presented for consideration by the Society; and make assignments to the proper committee. The President is the responsible agent of the Chapter. 5 Constitution & By Laws Eta Mu Sigma National Honor Society 02-27-2018 Section 6. Vice President a. The Vice President shall assist the President in operation of the chapter and shall assume the duties of the President in their absence. They will also act in the capacity of any other officer absent from a meeting. The Vice President shall coordinate and supervise the general functions of all committees and refer specific policy decisions to the President when deemed necessary. Section 7. Secretary a. The Secretary shall be charged with keeping the minutes of all regular, special, and executive committee meetings and incorporate these into the Chapter History or maintain it as a separate record. They will handle all Chapter correspondence not specifically addressed to other officers; and establish and maintain the chapter roll, mailing list and Secretary’s File. Section 8. Treasurer a. The Treasurer shall have the charge of maintaining the Chapter funds and make all required financial reports. All major expenditures must be authorized by a majority vote of the active members present. In addition, the President shall have the authority to make expenditures to maintain common business of the Society. Section 9. Executive Committee a. The Executive Committee, consisting of the advisor and Chapter officers, shall be charged with authorizing all urgent business of the Chapter between meetings, making pertinent recommendations to the members, and handling such other matters as may be referred to them at any regular or special meeting of the Chapter. Section 10. Officer Introduction Packet a. An Officer introduction packet should be kept up to date for each Officer position. Each packet will include information for online resources utilized by the Officers. b. The President’s Introduction Packet will include: i. Committee History ii. Constitution, By Laws and Amendment History c.
