Alpha Eta Mu Beta Stony Brook University Chapter Article I: Name The name of the organization shall be Alpha Eta Mu Beta. Article II: Purpose Section I: Statement of Purpose The purpose of the Alpha Eta Mu Beta – Stony Brook University Chapter is to recognize undergraduate students in the Biomedical Engineering program who have demonstrated strong academic commitment within the engineering curriculum. Members of the honor society are expected to continue enhancing their education and promoting a positive sense of community in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University. These goals may be accomplished through volunteer services and involvement at events sponsored by the department and the AEMB chapter of Stony Brook University. Alpha Eta Mu Beta, as a registered organization at Stony Brook University is committed to promoting a safe and vibrant campus community. In receiving annual recognition through the Department of Student Engagement and Activities, no individual or group affiliated with Alpha Eta Mu Beta will take any action or create a situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers mental or physical health or involves the forced consumption of liquor or drugs for the purpose of initiation into or affiliation with this organization. The leaders and members of Alpha Eta Mu Beta also agree to abide by all aspects of the Stony Brook University Conduct of Student Responsibility, University policies and Federal, New York State and Local laws. Section II: Official Symbol The official symbol of the Alpha Eta Mu Beta - Stony Brook University Chapter shall adhere to the general form of the national logo, but include slight modifications to distinguish Stony Brook University from other chapters. Article III: Membership Section I: Statement of Inclusion a. Membership must be open to currently registered, matriculated graduate and undergraduate students of Stony Brook University who have paid the respective student activity fees and must subscribe to, or be interested in the purpose of this organization b. No person shall be denied membership or office because of sexual orientation, nation of origin, race, sex, and physical disability, political or religious beliefs, and all other protected classes under federal and state laws. Alpha Eta Mu Beta Stony Brook University Chapter Section II: Active Membership a. Attending one AEMB sanctioned event or completion of one AEMB assignment per semester is required to remain active. This attendance will be monitored by attendance sheet. To confirm compliance, the current secretary of the AEMB executive board will review each member’s status. b. Alumni will be notified of events when they occur and are encouraged to attend. However, attendance will not be mandatory to remain active for our chapter.In addition, any faculty members who are part of AEMB will be incorporated in the Faculty Lecture Series. c. As stated by the constitution of the AEMB national organization, membership requirements and disciplinary actions for inactivity are to be determined by the local student chapters. If a member has failed to attend the mandatory one event per semester, they will be considered inactive. Students will be notified before any action is taken to allow them some time to fulfill these requirements. If students remain inactive after this preliminary warning, they will be stripped of all AEMB benefits, including University recognition upon graduation. Section III: Induction Requirements a. Inductees of this honor society are required to be in the top fifth of their junior class or top third of their senior class, according to academic standing. These students must have been declared as a Biomedical Engineering major by this time. Once inducted, each member should maintain active membership. Students will be notified of their eligibility during the beginning of the spring semester and their induction shall be held during the Spring session. b. There is an initial lifetime membership fee of $80 to the AEMB national organization. Additional chapter dues are to be determined on a yearly basis depending on the needs of the organization at that time. However, financial circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis to provide support to those who may not be able to afford the initial fee or the dues. Article IV: Executive Board Section I: General Requirements a. All nominees for executive board positions must have a minimum, cumulative grade point average of 2.25 and if elected, must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 and must be a registered, matriculated student for the semester(s) during which they are to serve. b. All officers shall serve for two semesters and must be re-elected at the end of their term, as long as they maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 and remain as a registered, matriculated student each semester. Alpha Eta Mu Beta Stony Brook University Chapter Section II: Organization a. The members of the main executive board shall be President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary b. An auxiliary board may consist of an STEM Outreach Coordinator, Professional Outreach Coordinator, or Webmaster. c. The Professional outreach coordinator and STEM outreach coordinator executive board positions are the only positions that may be expanded to include more than one member, but no more than 3 members per position. Expanding a position to include more members must be done during the nomination period and must comply with established election processes. d. The total membership of the main executive board and auxiliary board combined shall not exceed members of the organization. e. A faculty advisor, who may or may not be mainting a membership with the national Alpha Eta Mu Beta organization, will be available as a resource to the main executive board and the auxiliary board. Section III: President a. The President shall be the official representative of the organization; they shall also be a non-voting, ex-officio member of all committees of the organization. b. The President shall have the power to convene and preside over the meetings of the executive board and the general body, as well as prepare the agenda for the respective meetings. c. The President shall further perform duties, as may be necessary and proper in the fulfillment of their office, subject to the approval of the executive board. Section IV: Vice President a. The Vice President shall be responsible to see that standing committee chairpersons are fulfilling their duties. b. The Vice President shall be responsible for the technical and electronic duties, including but not limited to being the primary contact for the organization. c. The Vice President shall further perform such duties, as may be necessary and proper in the fulfillment of their office, subject to approval of the executive board. d. In the event that the President is unable to perform their duties (due to leave of absence, resignation, or impeachment), the Vice President shall assume the position of President. e. In the event that the Vice President is unable to perform their duties (due to leave of absence, resignation, or impeachment), a new Vice President will be elected in a special election called by the President. Alpha Eta Mu Beta Stony Brook University Chapter Section V: Treasurer a. The Treasurer shall keep a detailed record of all monies allotted to and raised by the organization. b. The Treasurer shall perform such duties, as may be necessary and proper in the fulfillment of their office, subject to the approval of the executive board. c. In the event that the Treasurer is unable to perform their duties (due to leave of absence, resignation or impeachment), a new Treasurer will be elected in a special election called by the President. Section VI: Secretary a. The Secretary shall take minutes and attendance of all meetings and maintain an up to date active voting membership roster. b. The Secretary shall send out a weekly email, which outlines the agenda of the upcoming meeting, one school day prior to the meeting. c. In the event that Secretary is unable to perform their duties (due to leave of absence, resignation, or assumption of the presidency), a new Secretary will be elected in a special election called by the President. Section VII: STEM Outreach Coordinator a. The STEM Outreach Coordinator is responsible for organizing events that promote the merits of Biomedical Engineering within and outside of the campus community. b. In the event that STEM Outreach Coordinator is unable to perform their duties (due to leave of absence or resignation), a new STEM Outreach Coordinator will be elected in a special election called by the President. Section VIII: Professional Outreach Coordinator a. The Professional Outreach Coordinator is responsible for organizing events that promote the professional development of AEMB and its members. b. In the event that Professional Outreach Coordinator is unable to perform their duties (due to leave of absence or resignation), a new Professional Outreach Coordinator will be elected in a special election called by the President. Section IX: Webmaster a. The Webmaster shall be responsible for maintaining the chapter’s website and email account. b. In the event that Webmaster is unable to perform their duties (due to leave of absence or resignation), a new Webmaster will be elected in a special election called by the President. Alpha Eta Mu Beta Stony Brook University Chapter Section X: Faculty Advisor a. The Faculty Advisor shall be responsible for maintaining correspondence with BME faculty for invitations to major AEMB events. b. In the event that Faculty Advisor is unable to perform their duties (due to leave of absence or resignation), a new Faculty Advisor will be chosen by the executive board. Article V: Meetings Section I: Executive Board Meetings a. This organization shall hold at least one executive board meeting every week.
