Implementation Status Overview Public Disclosure Copy The project implementation is progressing satisfactorily. The project received the initial project advance of USD$ 2.7 million in early June 2012 and project activities in the five components

have long started. Recently (September 2012) due to the floods occasioned by the over-flowing of the Niger River in Northern Benin, the project mobilized a team to the various communities; in particular and Karimama. The team held sensitization sessions with the communities on behavior change before, during and after flooding; adaptation mechanisms; and basic hygiene most especially boiling and filtering water before drinking.

Key terms of references have been cleared and the following contracts are about to be signed: (i) EIA of the drainage channels (P, AA, W2 and Wbis) and the Fifadji bridge; (ii) technical studies and supervio supervisory works for the construction of Fifadji bridge; (iii) sensitization and communication aspects of flooding and Disaster Risk Management; (iv) technical studies and supervisory works on the opening of a new cell and rehabilitation of the access road to the Ouesse landfill site; (v) sensitization of the Public on municipal wastes; (vi) environmental audit of the existing landfill cell and EIA of the access road to the landfill sites; and (vii) peer educators and community first responders in the municipalities. The following consultancies are ongoing: (i) organizational and financial study of solid waste pre-collection in Abomey-Calavi and Seme-Kpodji; and (iii) technical and economic feasibility study of municipal solid waste management system in the selected municipalities of Cotonou, Abomey-Calavi, , Seme-Kpodji, and Porto Novo. On the whole implementation status is satisfactory and it is expected that December / early January 2013, the civil works will commence.
