PREPARE FOR REGISTRATION IN STRASBOURG

Request Courses  Review this packet and course descriptions on the SU Abroad website.  Select courses and plan your desired schedule, consulting the Time Schedule of Classes.  You need special permission from SU Abroad to

take any course not found on the Time Schedule.

 Complete and submit the Student Advising Form (STEP 1: Course Preferences) in the Questionnaires section of your online application following the instructions.  Print Student Advising Form (SAF) and take to your advisor to ensure your course plan will keep you on track for graduation.  It is helpful to print and provide your advisor with descriptions of all the courses you want to get approved.

Upload Student Advising Form to SU Abroad  Upload form signed by your advisor(s) to your online application by April 27.  Only legible PDF files will be accepted.  SU Abroad will record any changes made on your uploaded Student Advising Form as a result of your meeting with your advisor(s).

GRADES AND ACADEMIC RESOURCES

 At , all work for registered classes must be completed on or before the degree certification date. If you are a graduating senior, you should seek advice from your home college regarding your degree certification date.  Information on enrollment policies, grades, SU library resources, registration, internships and independent research can be found on the Preparing To Go website. Visiting students should also look at this site for information on transfer credit and requesting an SU transcript.  You should carefully review academic policies applicable to all SU Abroad programs.  You should regularly check your syr.edu email for messages from SU Abroad.  Arrangements to do coursework on an independent research basis if needed to satisfy a degree requirement must be made in advance. Due date for such proposals is May 15.

COURSE INFORMATION

All the courses expected to be offered this semester are listed on the provisional Time Schedule of Classes. Syracuse University reserves the right to cancel a course with low enrollment or to change the course format to a structured independent study.

REQUIRED COURSES All students are required to take the following:

 The Signature Seminar course, European Identity Seminar, PSC/HST 400.3/IRP 300.1 (SU IR majors must register under the IRP rubric). This course carries 3 credits, with additional sessions, coursework and activities during the semester. You may not drop the Signature Seminar.  Exception: Students in the Engineering program do not participate in this credit-bearing seminar, but will travel to Germany before the start of classes.  At least one course taught in French. If you are at the beginning or intermediate levels, this course will be FRE 101, 102, 201 or 202. If you have completed four semesters of college-level French, or its equivalent, you will take FRE 325 and/or another course taught in French (FRE 307 or FRE/HST 447). Students taking FRE 202 may also take FRE/HST 447.

INTERNSHIP SCHEDULING If you have applied for and are successfully placed in an internship in Strasbourg, please be aware of the following time commitment:

. For IPA 470, 1-credit placements, students generally spend one half-day per week at their placement. . For PSC 471, 3-credit Council of internships, students generally spend two half-days at the Council each week, but time commitments will vary depending on the nature of the assignment.

STUDY /COURSE FEES Some courses include required study tours that are an integral part of the course. Please carefully review the course-related fee sheet and also share it with your parents/guardians if they are financially responsible for your fees. If you register for any course with a mandatory study tour(s), you must participate in this field study. Do not plan personal travel until you get to Strasbourg and know when you may be required to take part in a class-related study tour, make-up classes, Signature Seminar sessions, exam periods, and other academic commitments. Fees to cover the costs of these study tours are charged automatically to your Bursar account once your registration is processed in Syracuse (typically in mid-September).

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Grades for courses taken at a French university may not be posted to your SU transcript until March so you should ensure that this timing will not adversely affect you academically or in terms of financial aid awarding. At Syracuse University, all work for registered classes must be completed on or before the degree certification date. Graduating seniors should seek advice from their home college regarding their degree certification date.

Programs If you have been admitted to the French Language Institute or programs, you should complete and upload your Student Advising Form seeking approval for PSC/HST 400.3/IRP 300.1 – The European Identity Seminar and for any other courses offered at the Strasbourg Center in which you are interested.

Recommended center courses include FRE 307 and FRE/HST 447, which are taught exclusively in French.

 For students enrolled in the French Language Institute (Institut International d’Etudes Françaises): You will take the French placement exam at the IIEF upon arrival in Strasbourg and will be placed into a French language core class (for 6 credits) based on your level. You may also choose to register for a variety of elective one-credit courses at the IIEF in subjects including History, Literature, Cinema, Political Science, etc. These courses may be grouped together to fulfill course requirements.  For students enrolled at the Université de Strasbourg and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques Initial course selection for the Université de Strasbourg (UdS) and Institut d’Etudes Politiques (IEP) is based on the published course offerings. We suggest that you choose several courses with your academic advisor to account for any scheduling conflicts/changes. SU Strasbourg Center Assistant Director, Mary Boyington, will be (or has been) in direct contact with you for advising and pre-enrollment/registration. Final course selection will be made once in Strasbourg. . IEP - Students may take courses for 1st, 2nd, and 4th-year students at the IEP as well as courses designed for international visiting students. . UdS - Students may take courses for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd -year students in the departments of Letters (French and comparative literature), Foreign Languages, Social Sciences, Philosophy, History, Arts and Theater, etc.

 Engineering Program If you have been admitted to the Engineering Program, you should complete and upload your Student Advising Form seeking approval for the following required courses:

If you have room in your schedule for three additional credits, you may also consider an optional academic elective from among offerings at the Strasbourg Center.*

COURSE-RELATED FEES STRASBOURG FALL 2016

REVIEW AND GIVE TO YOUR PARENT/GUARDIAN

Students who register for any of the courses listed below will be charged a fee to cover special activities, such as study tours, which are an integral part of the course. Study tour fees reflect the cost of transportation, accommodations, and most site entry fees. This is not a bill.

Fees are billed from Syracuse University following the overseas registration period, appearing on a subsequent Bursar statement. Students receive an email notice to view their bill in MySlice. These fees are not included in either the tuition or program fee charges, which are billed prior to departure. Any new course-related fees or fee increases approved after this date will be announced prior to registration. All students who register for a course with a course-related fee are required to pay the fee, even if they are only auditing the course.

Financial Deadline to Withdraw from the Program: Please refer to the SU Tuition, Fees, and Related Policies Bulletin for information on refund of course-related fees for students who withdraw from the program voluntarily, involuntarily, or due to suspension or expulsion.

Financial Deadline for Course/Credit Changes: Students in the program who make course/credit changes by the Financial Deadline indicated in MySlice may request a refund of any unspent or uncommitted portion of the course fees. There is no refund of course fees to students in the program who make course/credit changes after this deadline.
