2 OUR LADY OF LOURDES CATHOLIC CHURCH DE PERE, WISCONSIN Faith Without Works

Dear Friends, One of my favorite passages is in this week’s second reading. St. James writes, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?” St. James is writing to the 12 tribes of Israel scattered throughout the world. These tribes are living in areas where their neighbors might not be Christians...or where their neighbors even tolerate Christians. St. James is encouraging them to not live by the Christian name alone...not just by faith in Christ. But instead, let the world see them trying to live as had instructed them: to love one another as Jesus had loved them. And Jesus had loved them with His works! He fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and healed the sick. I think of my dad when I read this because he didn’t wear his faith on his sleeve. His faith wasn’t something he shared with strangers (or even friends). Instead, he rolled up his sleeves and put his faith into action. He was all about the “works." After his 10-12 hour day driving truck, he’d go over to neighboring farmers and help bail hay. He’d go to the local volunteer fire department (where he was a member) and service the fire trucks. He spent many Friday nights at our parish setting up tables and chairs for festivals, music concerts, and donut sales. He built bookshelves and props for plays for our Catholic school. He’d help a buddy, or a complete stranger out of a jam. And most of the time, he’d take one or more of his kids along (sometimes reluctantly) to silently teach us about the need to put faith into action. To do “works” for our fellow man. Faith by works is a very Catholic thing. Many Christian denominations maintain that just believing is enough to love and serve the Lord. But if we truly want to follow Jesus, we want to love like He loved—with actions—with works. And the great thing about works is there are so many things we could do. We are all given a number of talents and almost all of them can be used to help someone out. When we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, or heal the sick, we exclaim to the world that we are Christians—but we do so without using words. My challenge to you: Find something that you can do for someone else, and do it! Do it without expecting something done back for you in return. If you can, do it without that person knowing it was you that did it. But either way, do it! St. James goes on to say, “Faith, if it does not have works, is dead.” Show the world that your faith is alive. God Bless,

Deacon Bob Summers Wednesday School Mass Faith Formation Registration Just a reminder, the daily Mass on Wednesdays is now We are looking forward to seeing your children this being held at 8:45 a.m. with the school children. The choirs this fall are looking a bit different! Read on about two new music opportunities at Our Lady of Lourdes:

Pick Up Choir We want to invite everyone to be a part of our "Pick-Up" Choir! The "Pick-Up" choir meets in the church in the choir area 45 minutes before the beginning of Mass. We will provide music, you bring your own Breaking Bread book. The two dates for September are: Sunday, September 12, 10:15 a.m. Mass (meet at 9:30 a.m.) Sunday, September 26 at 8:15 a.m. (meet at 7:30 a.m) We are looking forward to meeting you!

Bell Choir My dream is to start a handbell choir. However, is there enough interest to begin a handbell choir? We would need 6 players and already have one person who has expressed interest. Anyone interested would need to be able to read music, treble clef, and/or bass clef as well as provide your own pair of handbell gloves. If gloves are needed they can be ordered for $4.50. Rehearsals would take place one or two Sunday mornings between the 8:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Masses for approximately a half hour, once or twice a month. There would be the possibility of playing at Christmas.

Anyone with interest should contact Jody by calling the Parish Office by at 336-4033 or email

4 OUR LADY OF LOURDES CATHOLIC CHURCH DE PERE, WISCONSIN

Dear OLOL Parishioners,

The OLOL students and staff are excited after experiencing our first project learning elective day. Students will be applying what they have been learning in class to real-life project based learning courses on Wednesdays. Research shows that understanding of a concept stays longer in when it is applied. We are excited to provide these courses to our students! Please save the Night of Keys fundraising date of Saturday, November 13. The event will be held at the National Railroad Museum. This is our largest fundraiser, and I love to see our Parish members attend. Please come out for an evening of fun and support OLOL Catholic School. In addition, parish members are always welcome to worship with us at school Mass on Wednesday at 8:45. We hope to see you there. I was doing some reading for enjoyment the past weekend and came across a poem in the book I was reading. I remembered the poem from my high school days, as I had had to decipher the meaning of the poem. That triggered in me the importance of education. I looked at the poem with an entire different perspective than when I was 18 years old. The perspective changed, but the process of learning and processing it remains the same. Here is the poem:

“For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe a horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost. For want of a rider the message was lost. For want of a message the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a nail.”
