Dear Friends:

With all the news focus on the growing war between President Trump and the new Democratic House of Representatives, it's easy for individual votes to get less notice than they should.

There was one vote in the United States Senate last week that no one of conscience should fail to note, and that we should hold in our hearts as proof positive about the growing disrespect for life permeating our trou- bled society.

The particular bill was not complex. Each year, some late term abortions fail in their mission. Before the doctor can suc- cessfully terminate the fully formed child (usually in the fifth through ninth months of development), the child slips out before death, before the abortion is completed. The child is obviously in distress as it was moments before in the process of being killed, but now that alive baby is out of the womb. We'd normally say that child has been born into the world, and being born means it is protected by our laws. The bill mandated that the doctor present now act to save the life of that born baby, but the United States Senate said no to that act of mercy. Specifically, forty-four Democratic Senators (including every declared Democratic presidential Senate hopeful), voted to let the baby die. Three Democratic Senators, God bless them, voted NO to that.

So since the baby was born alive, to do nothing to assist that baby is now no longer about abortion, it's infanticide, and it's cruelty beyond belief. The same party once headed by President Bill Clinton who desired that abortion be "safe, legal and rare," now supports the death even of born babies. Not surprisingly, both of our New York Senators (Schumer and Gillebrand) supported this commitment to infanticide. Shame on them and every other senatorial coward who turned their backs on this innocent and needful born alive child.

This vote matters very much. It does not matter only for the children who will die because of it, but because it reveals a new low in our political process. Talking with one parishioner this week, an elderly gentleman troubled by the vote, he made a very cogent point: "If a child of potential for a full and rich life is without meaning, what hope is there for us eld- erly, or the infirm, or the disabled?" And he was right. These babies have the potential to live good, full, healthy lives, and the Democratic party decided they're not worth saving. Why then do we believe that, in time, the elderly, the dis- abled, the Down Syndrome child, or the terminally ill will have any value in a society that embraces the culture of death promoted by those 44 Democratic Senators?

This vote mattered so much because it told us that we have become a country of life-threatening extremism — not just life-threatening for the pre-born child, or the already born victim of infanticide, but for all of us. Because if a child of infinite promise isn't worth saving when it's already born, why imagine ANY of us are safe?

Pray for the Democratic Party. This once great force built on protecting the little guy, the defenseless, the forgotten, the needful, has become the very opposite of its original purpose.

This vote was a heartbreaking wakeup call to people of true conscience. Be 'mad as hell' and make a principled stand against the butchery this vote represents. Be a true voice for the voiceless ones.

Thank you for your consideration.

In the Lord of Life and Love,

Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

CHURCH IN NEED COLLECTION

The Church in Need

On March 10, 2019 a collection will be taken for “The Church in Need.” The monies collected at this time will be shared among three areas of the world where there is a particular need for help:

 Church in Central and Eastern Europe – the funds collected provide support for pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in this region.

 The Church in Latin America - your support of the collection provides lay leadership train- ing, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ.

 The Church in Africa - the fund supports pastoral projects that strengthen communities in their faith and foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension.

Thank you for your generosity.

Lent 2019

DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

Dear Friends:

As we begin our prayer, fasting and almsgiving for the needs of the poor and the suffering of the world in this Lenten season 2019, we recommit ourselves to repentance, conversion and holiness individually and as a Church. We remember in a focused way this Lent the survivors of clergy sexual abuse and all forms of abuse and we pray for the purification, reform and sanctification of the Church.

In Rejoice and Be Glad, Francis says: “Do not be afraid of holiness. It will take away none of your energy, vitality or joy. (32)…He [The Lord] wants us to be saints and not to settle for a bland and mediocre existence. (1)…Holiness is the most attractive face of the Church. (9)…the Church needs passionate missionaries, enthusiastic about sharing true life. The saints surprise us, they confound us, because by their lives they urge us to abandon a dull and dreary medioc- rity.” (138)

One of the ways we commit ourselves to this radiant, natural and humble holiness is by expanding the breadth and depth of our daily engagement with the inspired Sacred Scriptures. We are called to live the words of Psalm 119: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

The saints of every decade and century inspire us since “the most profound interpretation of Scripture comes precisely from those who let themselves be shaped by the word of God through listening, reading, and assiduous medita- tion.” (Pope Benedict XVI, The Word of the Lord 48) Could each one of us individually and together, united in com- munion as a Church, take one step with the Holy Spirit this Lent to deepen our love for the inspired Sacred Scriptures?

In his Apostolic Exhortation The Word of the Lord (2010), Pope Benedict XVI gives us an excellent process of praying individual biblical passages, a process of lectio divina or sacred reading of the text that includes reading, meditating, praying, contemplating and living the biblical text. We need to believe with confidence and a spirit of adventure that the Holy Spirit is present in the text and that the Holy Spirit’s tongues of flame are connecting the text to our souls trans- forming us in mysterious and profound ways.

I would like to analyze and comment on the steps that Pope Benedict XVI proposes to us. (For the complete version of Bishop Barres’ Lenten Letter 2019 which analyzes Pope Benedict’s approach to lectio divina, see this link www.bishopbarreslentletter2019.org.) The Word of God makes us realists who recognize that the Word of God is the foundation of all things. (10)

As your bishop and servant, I invite you during this Lenten Season 2019 and beyond, to discover or rediscover the power of the Word of God by reading, meditating, praying, contemplating and living the inspired Sacred Scriptures. In the end, as Father Gaston Courtois points out: “Contemplatives are the true missionaries and alone can be the true spiritual teach- ers.”

Thank you all for your passion and daily dedication to the inspired Sacred Scriptures. Thank you for being the contem- platives, the missionaries, the spiritual teachers that are the agents and instruments of dramatic missionary growth on Long Island and beyond.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend John O. Barres Page 22 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish MARCH 11, 2019
