Dear Parishioners: Pastor’s Letter

Last week, I wrote about the sacrament of marriage. I would like to continue this week, focusing on marriage as a vocation. Next week, I would like to focus on Francis and his view of the sacra- ment of marriage..

Marriage is a vocation. A vocation is a call from God; it comes from the Latin word, vocare, which means “to call”. Usually, when we think of vocations, we think of vocations to the priesthood or the religious life. They, indeed, are vocations. However, in truth, all of us have a vocation. In fact, all of

us have two vocations.

The first vocation, or call from God, is shared by all of us. Each and every one of us who are baptized has a vocation or a call from God to become holy. If you want to know what your description is as a baptized Christian, it is this: by the time you die, you are supposed to be a saint! Everyone, not just priests or religious, is called to live that life of holiness.

How we become a saint is our second vocation. God called me to become a saint by being a priest; God has called others to become by becoming religious sisters or brothers. But God has called the vast majority of us to become saints by entering into the sacrament of marriage.

I think this an awesome thing to consider. On your wedding day, as you exchange your vows and say “yes” to one another, you are, at the same time, saying “yes” to God. You are cooperating with God’s plan for you.

There are many ways to get to Boston; you can drive, take the train, fly, etc. Just so, there are many ways to become a saint. My vocation to be a priest is not better than one’s vocation to the married life. My vocation to the priesthood is different; it is very different from one’s vocation to the married life but it is not better. In both cases, we are saying “yes” to God’s call or plan for me and for you. In both cases, we also are challenged to say “yes” to God’s vocation every day of my priesthood and every day of one’s married life.

Don’t forget that we have a number of exciting events coming up in March. We have our PARISH MISSION from Monday, March 13 to Thursday, March 16. On Saturday, March 11 we are having a St. Patrick/St. Day Dinner Dance hosted by the Rosary Christian Mothers and the Holy Name Society. Finally, on Sunday afternoon, March 19 (2:00pm – 5:00pm) we are hosting our annual Victorian Tea for the benefit of our Parish Outreach.

Remember: Together, we can do something beautiful for God.

In Christ,

Fr. Brian

PS: Calling all Vietnam War Veterans. The Long Island Air Force Association is hosting a series of events honoring those men and women who served in the Vietnam War. Please see Page 15 of this week’s bulletin to find the Application Form and the documentation needed (DD-214). It is a nice ceremony and I encourage all Vietnam War veterans to apply for the Commemorative Medal.

Growing with the Gospel the with Growing Sharing the Gospel

After you let God’s love fill your heart, you will act differently. If someone at school is mean to you, you won’t try to get even. You will pray for them instead, with love in your heart. If your parents ask you to make your bed, you will do it cheerfully. With God’s help, you can do a lot of good.

Mission for the Week

Pick up your toys and help with the dishes, without waiting to be asked.

Prayer

Dear God, help me to love other people the way you do.
