Sunday, June 27th, 2021

Dear Friends, Since the third weekend in June 2020, our churches have been open for public Mass but under many restrictions due to the pandemic. Now after a year the restrictions are being lifted and we are able to bring back many of the practices we have been missing. The feeling of liberation was evident last weekend in all the smiling faces, and in small things such as the happiness of people to be asked to bring the gifts of bread and wine to the altar. This weekend we will be able to sing together again! Over the summer we will be recruiting and retraining altar servers. We also will begin passing the collection basket, so we will need ushers and hospitality ministers. So far we are not able to offer communion from the chalice or cup. Therefore we will not need as many communion ministers as previously, but we will need some communion ministers as more people return to Mass. At the same time, we will continue livestreaming Mass for those who are unable to come to church in person, or for whatever reason are not yet ready to do so. We are in a time of transition, and we are likely not all going to move through this time at the same pace. Some of us may feel reluctant, and need to ease back into things. I am still hesitant about shaking hands. Bumping elbows is fine, but shaking hands has me looking for hand sanitizer or soap and water. I suspect that many of us have our “things” with which we are not yet comfortable. So let us be compassionate and understanding with each other. Let us appreciate the things and people we used to take for granted, and rejoice that we can be together again. Grace and peace, Fr. Gary Tyman

Have the courage to be truly happy. Francis

St. Joseph Reflection by John Givens Being a father to my son and daughter, both now in college, has been the joy of my life. I have never worked so hard or felt so deeply as I have in my role as a father. My kids taught me so much about myself. They changed my life. I became a better person. The things that I learned as a dad about unconditional love, patience, and putting others first became more pronounced in other parts of my life. I became more compassionate and caring with my students at UR and more selfless and giving as chair of my department. These behaviors came more naturally to me as a father, and I didn’t think too much about it. When I broke my back after a fall in January of 2020, I was suddenly unable to be that same person trying to take care of others. Instead, I was the one in need of unconditional love, patience and care. Instead of the strong father, I was the helpless patient. What a joy it was to discover the “fatherly” love of so many people: my children who showered me with love; my wife who took the running of the house and the physical care of me on her shoulders; my colleagues at school who brought us dinners for the entire month of ; and Dcn Rabjohn and McDermott, Fr Tyman and Lawler, who each visited me twice (!) and comforted me during my stay at the hospital and followed up with phone calls when I was home. The love of a father is a strong love. It is also a tender love. taught us to call God our father, but he used the affectionate form of the word: “Abba,” papa. It is this tenderness that tells us the most about fatherly love. Summer Family Fun Nights!
