DEACON’S CORNER Send your questions to [email protected] using Mass Schedule: “Deacon’s Corner” in the “subject line” or leave at the parish office to my attention. WEEKEND MASSES Lent Saturday Vigil 5:00pm Multilingual It is that time of year again when the Church asks us to become Grotto - weather permitting introspective and figure out some things about what we must do to become closer to Jesus. We are asked to really take a good look at ourselves to understand what might get in the way of Sunday 7:30am our relationship with Jesus and once we see how we live our English lives – what actions we do that we should not or what inactions that stifle us when we know we should act but do not. Livestream from Rectory

Then once we look at our lives honestly and deeply, what Sunday 10:00am changes can we make to set aside our weakest habits and strengthen those areas of our lives that make us grow closer to English Jesus. Often, we might give up something we love or at least Grotto - weather permitting like to do or eat or drink during lent to give us discipline in hopes that whatever sacrifice we make will strengthen us and Sunday 12:00pm make us better people. Spanish I do not knock giving up things for lent – in fact, that is what I Grotto - weather permitting have done for most of the Lenten periods in my life. When I am done at the end of the 40 days, it is like I say to Jesus, look what I did, and I am looking for a pat on the back or a gold star DAILY MASSES or some sort of recognition for my actions. But have I really Monday, Thursday, Friday grown closer to Jesus because I gave up desserts during 8:30am - English lent? If that is all I do, I submit that I have not grown any closer to Him. Grotto - weather Permitting

To me, one way to grow closer to Jesus is to get to know Him Wednesday in the scriptures. Saint teaches us that ignorance of the scriptures is ignorance of Jesus. We cannot grow closer to 5:30pm - English someone we do not know. The Old Testament points to Jesus Grotto - weather permitting and the fulfills the Old by teaching us who Jesus is and how His life and death and resurrection impacts ♦ us. CONFESSIONS So, my dear sisters and brothers at Our Lady of Lourdes, I recommend three items for you and me to try this Lenten Monday 10:30am - 12:30pm season: 1. Read the scriptures. Pick out a for example and read a part of it every day for the duration of lent. 2. Figure Thursday 5:30 - 7:00pm out one thing that you would like to change in your life, a habit Grotto - weather permitting you want to break for example or some other exercise of the will, and work on it for lent. 3. Pray more – talk to God every day and take some quiet time to listen to Him too. PRAYER OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION If we do these things or perhaps some other spiritual exercise, My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the most we will grow closer to Jesus and that is the ultimate goal of the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I de- season of lent. Have a blessed lent and let us pray for one an- sire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now re- other. ceive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and Blessings, Deacon Dave unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

5 First Sunday of Lent Gn 9:8-15

God said to and to his sons with him: “See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you: all the birds, and the various tame and wild animals that were with you and came out of the ark. I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth.” God added: “This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings.”

1 Pt 3:18-22

Beloved: Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the Spirit. In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.

Mk 1:12-15

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.

After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

6 I Domingo de Cuaresma Gn 9, 8-15
