“A Cellar Full of Surprises”
With the mission of picking the very best for the Kelly’s Wine List, there is only one alternative: meeting the producers! Direct contact with each producer is very enriching, since the wines tend to reflect the personality of those who produce them, in an interesting synergy between terroir, the micro climate and the land area where the grapes are planted, and the human intervention represented by the wine producer. I have meet with90% of the Wine producers in our 2014 collection and believe me there is no shortage of personality and passion!
In recent years there has been a huge movement towards organic and Biodynamic wines , considered by the skeptics as a mere marketing device! The core value of biodynamic farming involves working with nature, using only natural products and encouraging diversity with insects, animals, crops and soils, where the daily activities of planting, pruning, bottling or harvesting the crop are planned using the lunar calendar. In the initial years I was cynical of these tree-hugging wine makers until I realized we had a growing number of biodynamic and organic producers on our list (Marked with ), none who advertise the fact on the label! These are among the top growers in the world, passionate people who make wonderful wines that express their terroir all in harmony with nature.
Most of our wines are directly imported * from France especially from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone, Alsace and Languedoc – Roussillon, with the intention on offering both quality & value. All the producers are visited and each wine carefully tasted with the help of my Brother-in-Law, Vincent Avril, wine grower in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
The half bottle, dessert wines & large bottle selection is at the back of our list. We have also imported a selection of excellent Italian Estate & South African Wines , all of which are well worth trying.
Wines are chosen to deliver a good blend of quality, at excellent prices. Spending is no guarantee of quality, careful tasting however is!

Bill’s Special Recommendations
Dominique Piron Beaujolais
Dominique Piron’s family has been growing grapes here since the 16th century, and Dominique took over the estate in 1971. He farms 45 hectares of vineyards scattered among several different crus in Beaujolais, namely Morgon, Chénas, Brouilly, Régnié and Moulin-à-Vent. They take such great care of each of their crus that even the simple Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages wines are carefully selected from single-vineyard parcels. Each of their terroirs is unique, yet they are all granite-based soils—the ideal grounding for the Gamay grape. The Pirons farm sustainably, although they have also been experimenting with organic methods to achieve a rich biodiversity in the vineyards. Yields average between 45 and 50 hl/ha.
While the Pirons are extremely traditional in their vinifications, they also de-stem 25 to 100% of the harvest before crush, a much less common practice, but one which they believe lends finesse to the finished wines. Their Morgon, Chénas, and Moulin- à-Vent are entirely de-stemmed. Inspired by the Burgundian model, they look for long, whole-grape cuvaisons, lasting anywhere from 10 to 20 days, depending on the cuvee, with regular punch-downs for controlled colour and tannin extraction. The Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages undergo comparatively shorter cuvaisons, with the goal of achieving a light, buoyant texture in the final wine. All of the wines see some aging in neutral foudres and old barrels, but the Pirons firmly believe in leaving the character of the grape and its terroir unmasked. No one could ever accuse the Pirons’ wines of lacking structure or concentration.

Eric Forest Burgundy
This young passionate winemaker Eric Forest produces great Pouilly Fuisse from old vines, comfortably installed on the beautiful and steep slopes of the Rock of Vergisson, roots in solid chalk, cultivated with respect of their nature, searching for the appropriate expression of a terroir and a vintage. He produces some outstanding Pouilly Fuisses from his 4 acre estate. The vines were planted in 1963 by André – the grandfather; cultivated by Michel – the father, and taken over by Eric in 1999. The wines made from the Chardonnay grape, are matured in small oak casks and bottled after one year. There is very little filtration for fear of removing the flavour and character of the wine.
His 2008 vintage has great concentration with buttery fruit and nutty scent. Forest’s wines are found in the most top restaurants of Paris. Recently he also introduced two new wines to the fold with his Macon Vergisson ‘Sur la Roche’ and St. Veran ‘Le Paradis’. Both wines are planted on the higher slopes near Davaye village and make great fresh mineral style wines.
