Have Some Madera, M'dear
HAVE SOME MADERA, M’DEAR Story and photos by John Blanchette Quiet lanes flow through the Madera Wine Trail It was the July 4th weekend and I was headed into the Central Valley to visit Madera County and one of California’s oldest wine growing areas. The San Joaquin Valley can be blistering hot this time of year and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. Temperatures soared to 105 degrees. As my car drove on Route 99, slicing through this wide, flat and fertile plane that stretches over 200 miles between Bakersfield and Stockton, crops and livestock passed my window like an expanded grocery market. Table grapes, sugar cane, corn, tomatoes, citrus, peaches, plums, apricots, strawberries, watermelons, pistachio, pecan, Cattle range in the shadow of Giant Eucalyptus www.aiwf.org SAVOR THIS • OCTOBER 2010 15 almond, pomegranate and walnut trees, pigs, cattle, sheep, and dairy cows, etc. in abundance. One farmer told me that the topsoil is unlimited and all they need is water to grow their crops. And that’s a major problem. The current draught has caused some farmers to let their fields go fallow. The city of Madera, located 38 miles from the geographic center of California, derives its name from the Spanish word for wood, which was harvested in the Yosemite Valley foothills and shipped from Madera to build San Francisco and other area communities in the 1800s. The Madeira wine produced on the Portuguese Vineyards run to the mountains island made famous by the bawdy English tune I was off to confirm this as I explored the Madera “Have Some Madeira, m’Dear” is just a coincidence. -
THE WINE ADVOCATE #229 STEPHAN REINHARDT, 28Th Feb 2017
THE WINE ADVOCATE #229 STEPHAN REINHARDT, 28th Feb 2017 2015 ZEHNTHOF LUCKERT • SYLVANER CREUTZ *** From what is most likely the world’s oldest Sylvaner vineyard (planted in 1870) and, thus, a field blend of all different kinds of Sylvaners such as Gelber (yellow), Roter (red), Blauer (blue) and Muscat-Sylvaner (Sauvignon Blanc), the 2015 Sylvaner Creutz *** is a fascinating wine not just because of its incredible story but its unique flavors and taste! The wine opens very clear and pure and with lovely fruit aromas that a modern Grüner (green) Sylvaner doesn’t give. In fact, there are some muscat flavors here and a subtle intensity you can only find in -un grafted vines, which are extremely rare in Franken. This vineyard is located in a building land, but for some obscure reasons it survived, probably because it is too steep. Uli Luckert discov- ered it in 2011 and made the deal of his life: He got permission to cultivate it and has to pay 12 Bocksbeutel per year for that. The result in 2015 is gorgeous! This is an intense but highly delicate and elegant Sylvaner with lots of energy, finesse and juicy tension. Slightly creamy from the long lees contact until July but provided with very fine tannins, super delicate acidity and a stimulating grip, this is one of the most fascinating Sylvaners I have tasted in the last 12 months if not in years! Some Zinnkoepflé Sylvaner from Southern Alsace comes to my mind (also from limestone soils), but a dry and lush one like this? Not a single one. -

But we need a February newsletter to let you know about Fanny Sabre so we can have a March one later this month to talk about our shipment arriving this month. Fanny Sabre has arrived in Australia! Not her personally but her latest release wines such as the amazing Bourgogne Aligoté and the Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire 2010 which is a 100% Gamay. Both of these wines are sensational and very good value. We also just love her Volnay which is a light, delicate and very elegant Burgundy – just like Burgundy used to be! As we write this newsletter another shipment is being unloaded from Philippe Bornard from the Jura. We have completely sold out of his fabulous wines. They are just SO popular that they disappear very quickly. Watch out for news of these wines in the next newsletter – all the old favourites will be back. This month we seem to have gone overboard with the packs – but there is just so much nice wine to offer you! The first is a six pack of the delightful entry level wines of Fanny Sabre which includes a bottle each of the amazing Aligoté and a bottle of her new Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire which is a 100% Gamay. -

Effect of Berry Weight and Its Components on the Contents of Sugars and Anthocyanins of Three Varieties of Vitis Vinifera L
Effect of Berry Weight and its Components on the Contents of Sugars and Anthocyanins of Three Varieties of Vitis vinifera L. under Different Water Supply Conditions M. Ferrer1*, G. Echeverría2, A. Carbonneau3 (1) Facultad de Agronomia, Av. Garzon 780, Montevideo, Uruguay (2) Facultad de Agronomia, Av. Garzon 780, Montevideo, Uruguay (3) Sup-Agro 2, Place Viala, Montpellier, France ([email protected]) Submitted for publication: September 2013 Accepted for publication: December 2013 Key words: Berry size, composition, components, water availability, varieties The influence of berry size on wine quality is a matter of debate. With the aim to contribute to that debate, a study of the influence of the varieties Tannat, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon on berry weight, on berry components (flesh, seeds and skin) and on the varieties’ oenological potential under different water supply conditions was carried out in Uruguay between 2001 and 2004. Replicated samples of 250 berries per vineyard were gathered at technological maturity at harvest. Berry weight and volume, weight ratio among each of the components and anthocyanin potential (ApH1 ) were measured and a basic analysis of the must was carried out. The vine water status was established through the measurement of pre-dawn leaf water potential. The tests showed that berry weight and sugar content were positively correlated and depended on variety, as was evident from the proportions of the berry components. Flesh weight was the most important determinant of berry weight, and flesh weight changed with the weight of the seeds. Larger values of these two components explained the heavier berries of the Tannat variety.
