They are grown in home gardens for fruit and landscape the lives of New purposes or commercially for wine, raisins, or fresh consumption as “table” grapes. A cultivated variety, or “cultivar,” is a formal term for Mexicans through variety. Variety is the more common term, and will be used in this publication. Selecting grape varieties that are adapted to prevailing academic, research, climatic and soil conditions is an important step before planting. Very few locations above 6,000 feet in elevation are successful grape pro- and Extension duction sites. Suitable growing conditions at lower elevations are still very site-specific due to the major threat to grape culture: winter or programs. frost injury. Winter injury occurs at subfreezing temperatures during vine dormancy when no green tissue is present. Frost injury occurs at subfreezing temperatures when green tissue is present. A variety’s win- ter hardiness, or ability to withstand cold temperatures, depends on its genetic makeup or “type.” In addition to winter hardiness, other considerations when selecting a variety are its fruit characteristics, number of frost-free days required for ripening, disease susceptibility, yield potential, growth habit, and other cultural requirements.

  • 2017 PINOT MEUNIER Mendocino County
2017 PINOT MEUNIER Mendocino County Background This grape is a relative of the very mutative Pinot Noir and it gets its name from the fine white hairs on the underside of the grape leaf which from a distance resembles baking flour, thus “The Miller” (Meunier in French.) The Pinot Meunier grape is native to Burgundy and Champagne where it is used as a valuable blending component of many champagnes, where it adds fruitiness and softness to these wines. In Mendocino County, we are able to produce a very elegant still wine that has deep aromas and flavors. Vineyards This wine comes from three vineyards.62% Pinot Meunier from the vineyard owned by Roger Webb, which is located against the eastern foothills of Redwood Valley. These vines struggle in the shallow rocky red clay soils on this benchland site at 1,000 ft. in elevation. 31% Pinot Meunier from our Nube Bianco Vineyard located in the High elevation of Potter Valley witch has very cool nights and hot days. 7 % Pinotage from the Gearhart Vineyard which is located in Knights Valley, just south of the Ukiah Valley. Winemaking These grapes were hand-harvested September 13th to October 9th at an average 24.8 degrees brix. After crushing into a small open-top stainless steel tank the grapes were cold-soaked for 3 days prior to yeast inoculation and fermentation. The must was punched-down twice daily for another eleven days to gently extract color, flavor and tannins. After a gentle pressing the wine was racked into small French oak burgundy barrels from the Vosges forest of which 20% were new.

  • 2018 Napa Valley Pinot Meunier, Yount Mill Vineyard
2018 Napa Valley Pinot Meunier, Yount Mill Vineyard While having dinner with the Hoxey family a few years back (the Hoxeys own the historic Yount Mill Vineyard) we overheard a discussion of Pinot Meunier. It was planted for Mumm sparkling. We kicked each other under the table and immediately asked if we could please have some fruit. Still red wine made from Pinot Meunier is rare, and can make very earthy wine when grown in France. What would it taste like in Napa? As lovers of the wonderful diversity of grape varieties we needed to find out. Turns out it was delicious. We made the wine in 2015 assuming it would be a one-off, but it was such a hit that we decided to do it again in 2018. The Pinot Meunier is truly earthy and mineral, a prized characteristic here in sunny Napa, where the wines normally run fruitier, but it has tantalizing blue fruits as well, and a refreshing bright backbone of acidity and lively structure. The wine was fermented with 50% whole clusters in a small open top tank, with two manual punch downs per day. We pressed after 14 days and aged the wine in neutral Burgundy barrels for 10 months before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The pH is 3.58, the TA is 6.2 g/l, and the alcohol is only 11.7%. 126 cases were made. The Vineyard The Yount Mill Vineyard was one of the first certified organic vineyards in Napa Valley—they never stopped farming organically back in the post-war period when folks started using the new-fangled chemicals.
