Return to Switzerland via Munich airport
Please note that currently entry into Germany for non-resident Germans is only allowed if the direct onward journey is guaranteed and can be proven unequivocally towards the German border police. Hence, it is for example not permitted to spend a few extra days sightseeing or spending holidays in Germany. However, if the onward journey is not possible due to a late arrival at Munich airport you should provide a hotel reservation.
Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, far-reaching measures, restrictions and guidelines have been issued at national and international level. Transportation between Munich and Switzerland is also affected. Below please find information and links for your onward journey to Switzerland.
Connecting flights
Lufthansa offers daily direct flights to Zurich airport (departure 12:30) and one flight via Frankfurt to Geneva airport (departure 7am). For reservation and ticketing please visit the website: https://www.lufthansa.com/ch/de/homepage
Metro (S-Bahn)
The S1 and S8 lines connect the airport to the Munich city center at 10-minute intervals. The S1 travels via the west of the city and the S8 via the east. The trip to the main railway station at the city center takes approx. 50 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at the automated ticketing counters.
You will find further information under: https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/fahrplanauskunft/index.html
Trains in Germany (Deutsche Bahn): www.bahn.de
Currently the German railways offer only limited services to the national borders. Please check out the website www.bahn.de for the current situation and timetable or contact the service desk at the airport for assistance. On the website www.bahn.de you will also find all options and possibilities on how to cross the border to Switzerland in regional busses. When booking the tickets online simply type in the final destination in Switzerland (for example Zurich: routing will be indicated via Lindau - Feldkirch – Buchs SG or alternatively via Ulm – Singen – Stein am Rhein – Frauenfeld).
Cross border transport companies such as Flixbus have discontinued operations.
Swiss Railways (SBB): https://www.sbb.ch/
Due to the Coronavirus outbreak the Swiss public transport has been greatly reduced. However, a basic service remains in place. Please consult the online timetable www.sbb.ch shortly before starting your journey. SBB trains operate until the Swiss borders but have suspended all cross-border services.
