Dear/sir UNICEF Referring to the programme named Emergency WASH Assistance to vulnerable people in Benghazi, with a focus on children. Which is cooperated with Libyan Society for National Reconciliation and Charity Works and UNICEF at 28/03/2017. This is the assessment report for the project activities. A brief description of the city Benghazi Benghazi is the second most populous city in , and the largest area in the country, it is located in eastern part of Libya. The distance between and Benghazi about 1050 Km. The population there about 796.24 people/Km2, municipality No is 8, city code is 061, local time is (GMT +2).

The health sector in Benghazi The city has number of local health centres, and pharmacies, as well as some hospitals such as Benghazi medical centre, Aljala hospital, Alhowarry hospital, the seventh October Hospital, Aljomohri Hospital, chest diseases hospital, and children hospital. There are also private health centres. Actually the health sector has many problems because of the war in the city, consequently damage hospitals building, health centres and lack of medication.

Education sector In Benghazi there is the oldest university in Libya, is called Libyan University, the university was funded in 1955, which was at Qacer Almanar before campus had built. Then in 1968 the university campus is built and renamed as Benghazi University. Few years later the university renamed again as Qar Yuins University because is located at Qar Yuins suburb, where is located west the city. In 2011 the university renamed back as Benghazi University again. There are some other private universities such as Arabian Medical University, etc. the education in Benghazi also in all Libya provinces is compulsory and free, the compulsory education till finish secondary school. High also free, but is not compulsory. As well as I mentioned above destruction from the war there is reached some educational institutions. Safe drinking water There is a big water system is supplied the city by drinking water, that is connected to main and sub-branch water networks which is connected to central tanks, the central tanks have great capacity stowage of water, these tanks are installed higher in order to press the water flow, there are other networks to supply the consumers afterwards. Beneficiaries from this water system are just population who live in Benghazi city centre. Other population are depend on water wells and cisterns. , in Benghazi Municipality, General Company for Water and Wastewater is operating this water system. There is damage in the water system in the city due to same reason.

Wastewater drainage system With regarding to houses in city centre area are connected to wastewater network, which is supervised Benghazi Municipality and General Company for Water and Wastewater. Other areas are located out city centre rely on self-wastewater drainage system. So there are some wastewater drainage systems are affected because of the war there, which can enable the affected people to live in dignified hygiene conditions.

Our office branch in eastern province, which is a part of Libyan Society organization, conducted WASH assessment in 5 IDPs camps and 5 Schools across Benghazi, to identify the priority WASH needs of IDPs, is detailed in the table below.
