3 EXECUTIVE LETTER As we refl ect on the 2019.20 season of the Symphony Orchestra, it really was a tale of two seasons: an orchestra that was fi ring on all cylinders, playing all over Milwaukee in our fi nal season before moving to the Bradley Symphony Center, and an orchestra that had to respond to the greatest of challenges, a worldwide pandemic. If I had to combine the two, I would say I am proud. I am proud of how our orchestra rallied with our community and fulfi lled the vision of a new home at the Bradley Symphony Center, saving a beautiful theater, and revitalizing our city’s main street of West Wisconsin Avenue. I’m also proud of how following the succession of cancelled concerts, that our organization rallied together to make the decisions needed to steward this organization forward, protecting the now and protecting the future.

DAVID AND JULIA UIHLEIN, LYNDE UIHLEIN, AND THE LYNDE AND HARRY BRADLEY FOUNDATION HAVE GIVEN A COMBINED TOTAL OF $52 MILLION TO THE MSO’S PROJECT OF TRANSFORMING THE FORMER WARNER GRAND THEATER ON WEST WISCONSIN AVENUE INTO ITS NEW PERFORMANCE HOME. FINANCIAL OVERVIEW This was a challenging year for the MSO as it has been for symphony orchestras (and all arts organizations) across the country. As early as April 2020, the MSO’s board, staff , and musicians came together to proactively identify and implement expense cuts to help the organization weather the COVID-19 pandemic and the fi nancial impact it has caused. These expense cuts, in conjunction with increased support from so many MSO donors and government support through the Payroll Protection Plan, helped us end the year with an operating defi cit of just under $1,000,000. While the defi cit is disappointing on the heels of six consecutive years with net operating surpluses, the MSO came remarkably close to achieving a balanced operating budget in the midst of an extremely challenging environment.

Annual fund contributions were a bright spot for the year with a favorable variance of just over $300,000 to fi scal year 2020 budget assumptions. Total revenues are down $1.7 million as the result of concert cancellations due to COVID-19. This decrease in earned revenue was off set by a favorability in total expenses of nearly $3 million with lower artistic and operation expenses associated with the concert cancellations combined with staff and orchestra payroll expense savings. In addition, the year-end results were improved by $1.9 million in Payroll Protection Plan funding (which has been fully forgiven) and $1.1 million in funding.

The MSO’s consolidated year-end balance sheet shows a growth in unrestricted net assets of $18,797,342. Total net assets also increased by $19,590,497, from $69,332,510 to $88,923,007 - the result of construction activities bringing the Bradley Symphony Center to a realization, as well as ongoing positive cash fl ows from operating activities which refl ect fi scally responsible choices.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported the MSO over the past year for demonstrating your commitment to the symphony and understanding the importance of having a vibrant and diversifi ed art community. 20 FINANCIAL STATEMENT EARNED REVENUE ($000) Performance Revenue 3,037 OF ACTIVITIES ($000) Other Revenue 78 FY20 YEAR ENDED AUGUST 31, 2020 Total Earned Revenue 3,116
