Despite the setbacks, conflicts, and violence that the Arab world has endured since the mass rebellions of early 2011, we can at least thank Egyptian heart surgeon turned television satirist Bassem Youssef for giving beleaguered democrats everywhere reason to smile. Even as prosecutors accused him of a host of “crimes”—including insulting the president and Islam itself—Youssef continued to lampoon the govern- ment. Taking a page from the previous regime’s playbook, prosecutors insisted that the courts were acting independently and that citizens rath- er than state officials had brought the charges. Invoking this ridiculous rationale, the police compelled Youssef to review tapes of his show in order to explain his jokes to his unamused interrogators. 1 Does this Kafkaesque tale leave any room for optimism? Watching an unchecked security apparatus regularly operate beyond the reach of a problematic legal system to harass journalists, some Egyptian writers argue that the very idea of transition is a hoax.

    Reporters Without Borders ­ TV5 Monde Prize 2015 Nominees Journalist Category Mahmoud Abou Zeid, aka Shawkan (Egypt) “I am a photojournalist, not a criminal,” Shawkan wrote from Tora prison in February. “My ​ ​ ​ indefinite detention is psychologically unbearable. Not even animals would survive in these conditions." ​ Shawkan is an Egyptian freelance photojournalist who has been in pre­trial detention for more than 760 days. He was arrested on 14 August 2013 while providing the US photojournalism agency Demotix and the US digital media company Corbis with coverage of ​ ​ ​ ​ the violence used to disperse demonstrations by deposed President Mohamed Morsi’s supporters in Rabiaa Al­Awadiya Square. Three journalists were killed that day in connection with their work Aged 28, Shawkan covered developments in Egypt closely from Mubarak’s fall to Morsi’s overthrow and on several occasions obtained striking shots of the popular unrest. His detention became illegal in August of this year because, under Egyptian law, pre­trial detention may surpass two years only in exceptional cases. Few people in Egypt have ever been held pending trial as long as him. A date has finally been set for the start of his trial, 12 December 2015, when he will be prosecuted before a Cairo criminal court along with more than 700 other defendants including members of the Muslim Brotherhood, which was declared a terrorist organization in December 2013. Many charges have been brought against him without any evidence, according to his lawyer, Karim Abdelrady. The most serious include joining a banned organization [the Muslim Brotherhood], murder, attacking the security forces and possession of weapons.

During the question and answer period of her presentation, an audience member asked, “What about same-sex couples?” Deb’s answer was that academic research simply didn’t know.

    International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 4, No. 7(1); May 2014 Satyagraha in Democracy: Opportunities and Pitfalls Dr. Janmit Singh Assistant Professor Department of Political Science Sewa Devi S. D. College India Abstract Satyagraha was considered as morally rightful mean to resist unjust laws in totalitarian regimes. But there is a perspective which advocates granting scope to affirmative action by individuals and groups in democratic regimes. This may provide a channel to people to articulate their political resentment and insist for improvement where political class failed to represent their aspirations. But counterargument remains that any reform must usher from the constitutional structures and any attempt to circumscribe them would prove counterproductive as it would undermine the working of democratic structures. The analysis of various such movements in general and of Anna Hazare led movement in particular reveals that such movements act as means for the empowerment of people if continued to maintain their non-partisan nature. However, any attempt on their part to act as alternative to existing political class defeats not only their own cause but proves to be disastrous for democratic regimes. Keywords: Satyagraha, Democracy, Civil Society Movements, Constitutional, Lokpal Democracy has often been represented as panacea for all sufferings of civil society. The assumption is that system rests on choosing the representatives of the people who reflect the aspirations of society and execute them. Since constitutional and peaceful means are rule of game therefore democracy mitigates multiple cleavages existent in society. However, democracy despite all its virtues did not escape criticism. Political theorists Aristotle and Tocqueville had their doubts (Cunningham, 2005) which with the passage of time have been validated.
