This year, as we reflected on the 2018.19 season of the Symphony Orchestra, one word kept rising to the surface: Impact.

How does the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra make an impact on Southeastern Wisconsin and our entire region? As we transition to our new home on West Wisconsin Avenue, realize Director Ken-David Masur’s artistic vision, and execute on the Board of Directors’ vision for our organization, we continue to focus on making meaningful positive change in our city. It is constantly at the forefront of our minds.

In the 2018.19 annual report, you will see our orchestra by the numbers. From performances in the concert hall to education, community outreach, and volunteerism, you will see the reach of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to making a $44.3 million economic impact in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and infusing $90 million into West Wisconsin Avenue as we restore and renovate the Warner Grand Theater, we are making a cultural impact as well. More than 27,000 school children benefited last season from our education programing, and our community experienced 23 free performances as well as many opportunities for reduced priced tickets through our Gift of Music campaigns. As we move into our new home, those opportunities for education and outreach will continue to grow.

By the numbers, last season was an incredible success, and it was only because of you. Our wonderful patrons, donors, volunteers, and community who have supported this orchestra for 60 years and have led us to this moment in our history. Thank you for your dedication to your hometown orchestra. We look forward to an amazing future of making music for Milwaukee.

Getting Closer to Home

In August, one of the most critical moments in the Milwaukee Symphony’s restoration and renovation of the Warner Grand Theater was a huge success. C.D. Smith Construction, International Chimney, and Expert House Movers moved a 625 ton (or 1,250,000 pound) wall 35 feet into 2nd street.

The challenge was keeping the 86' x 100' wall intact and preserving the original 1931 steel frame, cream city brick infill and terracotta cladding while moving it east in busy .

25 Before the move, C.D. Smith removed 1,500 square feet of terracotta that will be refurbished and reinstalled.

The wall was moved by using 6 hydraulic rams that were powered by a unified hydraulic jacking machine linked together in unified pressure. A total of 36 jacks on 6 main beams lifted the wall.
