On departure from Cuba you will be asked to be at the airport 3 hours in advance. Havana’s International Airport arrival hall does have bathrooms. They may not have seats or tissue. This is normal in Cuba, so you may wish to bring packets of tissues. It is suggested to use the restroom on your flight before landing. On arrival at Havana’s José Martí International Airport proceed through Immigration. Your carry-on will once again be scanned. Give your ‘Health’ form to the nurses in white uniforms after you go through Immigration & screening. The important question they may ask is if you have been exposed to Ebola. Collect your bags and go through Customs giving them your blue customs form. You will be welcomed at the airport exterior lobby after you exit Cuban Customs.

Running April 16th through 25th, 2015 at the intimate Newmark Theatre, IMPACT opens with a world premiere work by one of the most sought-after choreographers in dance right now: Princess Grace Fellowship winner Darrell Grand Moultrie. The piece will be set to music by acclaimed composer and Artistic Director of Portland’s fEARnoMUSIC, Kenji Bunch. Moultrie’s work brings an innate sense of timing and theatricality that defies categorization, as shown by past commissions from renowned ballet companies, as well as superstars like Savion Glover and Beyoncé. To survive in the harsh reality of Moscow, the financier Philippe Jordan spends his evenings drawing Indians, creating ballerinas, and meeting oligarchs. And it helps! Philippe is quite an unconventional banker. During working hours he is deals with derivatives, futures and options, but in his private time he makes paintings on glass, and art from paper. “It seemed to me that there was always some magic at the Ballet: the music played, the notes came alive, the ballerinas flew in the air” Philippe was born in Strasbourg, and his stepfather, Robert Grossmann, not only was the vice- mayor of the town of Strasbourg, but also a long-term associate of Nicolas Sarkozy – “the man who thirty years ago taught the future French president the art of public speaking.” The former president of France also has one of Jordan’s works: a courier delivered it, and after a few days, Philippe received a letter of thanks. Unconventional by nature, again in 2010, Philippe invited his friend in Moscow, the French author Michel Houellebecq, who once compared Philippe’s works to those of Giorgio de Chirico. The story of their friendship is downright amazing. After reading the novel "The Map and the Territory," Jordan was shocked - the book’s main character was so much like him. He, like Jordan, met with Abramovich. And also painted a portrait of Houellebecq.

Unboxed features choreographers Yin Yue, Edwaard Liang, and Peter Chu using their voices and vocabularies to imagine their own versions of the Chinese Tea variation from The Nutcracker. These Asian and Asian-American dance-makers engaged in three-day workshops with Hubbard Street dancers exploring the questions: “What are the traditions we want to protect?” and “What do we want to leave behind?” Unboxed welcomes viewers to tear free from the confines of tradition and invites audiences to glimpse the promise of a future rewritten. HSDC is challenging what is known as canon, in this case, the Chinese Tea variation from The Nutcracker to ask, “Can a dance, only a minute long but fraught with stereotypes, exist within a more inclusive future?” Hubbard Street Dance Associate Artistic Director, Jessica Tong says “the idea for Unboxed was always about challenging conventions and stereotypes. But my main focus initially was really to create a fun way for Hubbard Street to interact with great choreographers while playfully researching this one-minute variation.     J OHN F . A NDREWS OBE JOHN F. ANDREWS is an editor, educator, and cultural leader with wide experience as a writer, lecturer, consultant, and event producer. From 1974 to 1984 he enjoyed a decade as Director of Academic Programs at the FOLGER SHAKESPEARE LIBRARY. In that capacity he redesigned and augmented the scope and appeal of SHAKESPEARE QUARTERLY, supervised the Library’s book-publishing operation, and orchestrated a period of dynamic growth in the FOLGER INSTITUTE, a center for advanced studies in the Renaissance whose outreach he extended and whose consortium grew under his guidance from five co-sponsoring universities to twenty-two, with Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Rutgers, Virginia, and Yale among the additions. During his time at the Folger, Mr. Andrews also raised more than four million dollars in grant funds and helped organize and promote the library’s multifaceted eight- city touring exhibition, SHAKESPEARE: THE GLOBE AND THE WORLD, which opened in San Francisco in October 1979 and proceeded to popular engagements in Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington. Between 1979 and 1985 Mr. Andrews chaired America’s National Advisory Panel for THE SHAKESPEARE PLAYS, the BBC/TIME-LIFE TELEVISION canon. I will see ballets about people, animals, and even sports! And in ballets, there are no words. The dancers tell the story with movement. Houston Ballet Academy in Raymonda Photo by Jim Caldwell 50 Years in 50 Minutes will be performed at Houston Ballet Center for Dance. When I arrive, I will park in the parking lot, next to the building. There will be people there to help show the way. We will walk from the parking lot to Houston Ballet Center for Dance. We will walk through two set of doors. We will enter the lobby area. This is a place where I can sit down to rest with my family and friends. Before the show, I can use the restroom or get a drink of water. I might need to get my tickets from the box office. Once I have my tickets, I can go into the theater.

    American photographer Exhibits Photos of Cuban National Ballet The future stars of the Cuban National Ballet, students of the famed National Ballet School in Havana are the subjects of an exciting new exhibition by American photographer, Rebekah Bowman. Curated by Roberto Chile and Rebekah herself, the exhibition will open next Monday October 27 at Havana's José Martí Memorial in Revolution Square, as part of activities of the International Ballet Festival of Havana, running October 28 to November 7. The images in medium and large format reflect many aspects of the daily ritual of classes and rehearsals at the National Ballet School. Commenting on the photographic display, Miguel Cabrera, Historian of the National Ballet of Cuba, said: "This exhibition, which we gratefully welcome, besides constituting a valuable testimony, is a tribute to the rich heritage of the institution, showcasing the inexhaustible yeast that nurtures the future of Cuban ballet." The National Ballet School in Havana was originally founded in 1931, but grew into the prestigious institution it is now in the 1960s, after Fidel Castro came to power and declared that art and education were for the people. Talented children from all over the island could get free ballet training; the school is open to every child. Since the '60s, the Cuban ballet style has been chiefly formed by prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, now 93, and her husband Fernando Alonso. According to Bowman, along with its rigorous attention to classical form and technical precision, “the Cuban style has borrowed elements from the then-dominant European schools, influenced by aspects of Cuba’s Spanish and Afro-Cuban cultural heritage, and adapted them to the Cuban dancer’s physiology to express a Latin sensibility and aesthetic.” Many of Cuban ballet school graduates are dispersed all over the globe in prestigious companies such as the San Francisco Ballet, the Royal Ballet, and the American Ballet Theater.

Acosta’s choreography draws on Marius Petipa’s 1869 production of this classic ballet and is set to an exuberant score by Ludwig Minkus arranged and orchestrated by Martin Yates.
