It is indeed a beloved song encouraging us to “pray But the root of the word “obey” does not indicate or for peace, people everywhere…” You may think it even presume subservience. In its derivation, “to obey” strange, but the 6 word question, “do you hear what is “to listen or to hear”. I hear?”, can open up new vistas for every person on the practice of a life of obedience. Do You Hear What I Hear? St. Benedict begins his Rule of life with a simple verb: Listen! 2008 Monastic Discernment and Election of Prioress

By: Sister Evelyn Dettling, OSB

One of the most important responsibilities of a Benedictine Community is the election of the Abbot/ Prioress who according to the Rule of St. Benedict holds the place of Christ in the monastery. In Chapter 64 on the Election of the Abbot/Prioress, St. Benedict urges that the one chosen be selected by the whole community. The one elected must “arrange everything that the strong have something to yearn for and the weak nothing from which to run.” Chapter 72, The Good Zeal of the Monastic puts this responsibility in context: Sisters raise their hands in blessing the newly elected Prioress, Sr. Bernardine Hemberger, in the election of 1978. “This then is the good zeal which monastics must foster with fervent love. They should each try to be the first to show respect to the other, Prioress of Benet Hill Monastery in Colorado supporting with the greatest patience one Springs and Susan Quaintance from St. Scholastica another’s weaknesses, and earnestly competing Monastery in Chicago will assist us in formulating in obedience to one another. On Sunday, September 23, 2007 the process began with a Welcoming Service at Vespers. This leads to a three year period of discernment, during which time Sister will test her vocation to the Benedictine way of life. After this time, if she so desires, she will make a permanent transfer of her Vows. As we advance in religious life and faith, we shall run the way of God’s commandments with expanded hearts and unspeakable sweetness of love… As she looks to the future, Sister Joann would like to work as a certified nursing assistant or an activities director with the elderly.
