St. Patrick Mission Statement A Welcoming parish called to FAITHfully know, LOVE and serve God and Neighbor in the HOPE of heaven. Page 2 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ, This weekend Jesus tells us: Love Your Enemies. Love of enemies is a major distinguishing Christian character- istic. It is a difficult but not an impossible task. Jesus would not ask us to do what is impossible. For most of us this is an invitation to a lifetime journey in order to imitate God in His love. , a special season of God’s love will start in ten days. This year our theme is: Lent: A Time To Imitate the FAITH of the who exemplified God’s love. “Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8). The saints will help us achieve what Jesus asks. With their intercessions God’s graces will flow through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We have some plans for our Lenten journey this year: 1. Shroud of Turin Exhibit: Pre-Lenten event will begin this Saturday the 23rd to Thursday the 28th. The Shroud of Turin is one of the profound mysteries that points to Christ’s Resurrection. It has long been venerated as the burial cloth of Jesus. I pray you can find time to bring your family and friends to see this full-scale replica of the Shroud. Jesus’ resur- rection is the foundation of our journey of love. 2. Lenten Day of Recollection/Display of Relics: Please join us on Saturday, March 9th at 1:00 PM in the Church for a video presentation by Father Carlos Martins on “Sacred Relics of the Saints” Treasures of the Church. The of relics is a communion with the heroes of our Christian faith, asking for their powerful intercession. All of the 1st and 2nd class relics that we have here at St. Patrick will be displayed for veneration. These include 1st and 2nd class relics of St. , St. Clare, St. Cecilia amongst others. See page 7 of this bulletin for complete details. 3. Weekly Saint Highlight: Highlighting of one saint each weekend of Lent. This will include veneration of a particular saint’s relic, biography of the saint in the bulletin and a prayer card. 4. Small Christian Communities: Prayerfully consider being part of a Small Christian Community this Lent. Jesus started a small community with The Twelve and eventually He would send out His disciples two by two – a small community. The idea is to bring 8-10 people together for about an hour weekly through Lent so they can pray, share and encour- age each other on the journey. There will be a leader to facilitate discussions. The location of the meeting can be at the parish, a participant’s home or other convenient location. Please call the parish office as soon as possible with your name, contact information and meeting time preference. Please find time this week to read this weekend’s Gospel reading, Luke 6:27-28. It is challenging & difficult, but not impossible. It will help us to keep Jesus’ new commandment, “Love one another, as I have loved you.” (John 13:34). This is our journey - to love the way God does. In Christ, Fr. Godwin

Advent Day of Recollection

Date: Saturday, March 9, 2019

Time: 1:00PM - 5:00PM

Location: Church

Our Lenten Theme this year encourages us to imitate the Faith of our Leaders, the Saints. One of the ways to grow closer to our saints, is by getting to know their stories and veneration of their relics. St. Patrick has first class relics of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Claire, St. Cecilia, St. Pius X, St. Francis Cabrini, St. Lewis Betran and of course St. Patrick. We also have a second class relic of St. Margaret, .

During each of the Lenten Weekends this year, we will display at the altar the relic of one of these saints for your venera- tion, distribute Prayer Cards with a prayer of each of these saints and provide the story of the saint of the week in the bulletin.

Please join us on Saturday, March 9th at 1:00PM in the Church for a video presentation by Father Carlos Martins on “Sacred Relics of the Saints” Treasures of the Church. The veneration of relics is a communion with the heroes of our Christian faith, asking for their powerful intercession. The presentation summarizes the Church’s use of relics and is scriptural, catechetical and devotional in nature.

Fr. Carlos Martins, C.C., is a with the Companions of the Cross, a religious community with the charisms and mis- sion of evangelization. He is a convert from atheism who discovered Jesus Christ and the Catholic church while he was an undergraduate. He is a renowned expert on saints and their relics, having received the ecclesiastical designation of Custos Reliquiarum.

Video Presentation • Relics in Scripture • Relics & Theology • Noteworthy Relics • Relics & Miracles - Including the story of St. and a virtual exposition of over 160 relics.

Vocation Corner

As an assistant Vocations Director for the Diocese of Rockford, one of the things I get to do every so often is speak to young people about the topic of vocations. The way that I normally like to start out these talks is by asking them a simple question: What is the meaning of life? I do this partly because it gets right to the heart of the topic of vocations, and partly because I like to hear the answers they come up with! Sometimes they say some silly things, but someone will always get the right answer eventually. As Cath- olics, we know the meaning of life is to know, love, and serve God, and to be happy with him in this life and in the life to come. In other words, we are meant to become saints and spend eternity with Him in Heaven! This question gives the starting point for why choosing the right vocation is important. If our goal is to become saints, then we should want to take the path that gives us the greatest chance at achieving that goal. The good news is that we do not have to decide what that path is for ourselves. God has already made that decision for us! Our is to simply listen to what God is calling us to and respond generously. Brothers and sisters, God loves you and wants you to be happy. When you are fulfilling the role that God has made you for you will find that true happiness that you desire. Surrender everything to Jesus, and He will show you the true meaning to your life. Fr. Robert Gonnella, Assistant Vocations Director

St. Patrick’s Windows

The above three windows can be seen when exiting the church. They are above the three main doors in the narthex. Each of these presents to us a reminder of those who exercise authority in the church. Of course, the ultimate authority rests with Jesus, the head of the Church. This is presented in the middle window with the crown and the cross. This is a correlation to the Christ the King window in the sanctuary. Jesus gave authority on earth to Peter, the first Pope. The office of the Pope is represented in the last window. One can see the papal tiara (no longer used by the Pope) and the keys to the kingdom, received from Jesus and the symbol of the Pope’s authority. The authority in the local church rests with the bishop of the diocese. This is represented in the first window with contains the symbol’s of the bishop’s authori- ty—his miter and staff.

The Music Ministry invites you to join them every Tuesday evening at 6:30PM in the Church to pray the rosary for all the sick of our parish fami- ly. They will be praying for those whose names are listed in the bulletin as well as any special prayer intention which you wish to include.

The birth of a baby is such a joyful miracu- lous time for a family! A new father recently took a week off from his two jobs to be with his wife and newborn baby. As well as they’d planned, they found themselves short on their rent payment last month. Thanks to your generous donations, St. Vincent de Paul was able to pay the difference in what was owed to the landlord. Bags of food and an Aldi’s gift car to buy baby formula helped this couple transition to a thankful family of three. Matthew 19:14 “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs ot such as these.”’ Page 10 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
