Dear Friends in Christ, Introducing St. Patrick’s Sister Parish St. in Owot-Uta, Akwa Ibom, Happy New Year. I am writing to from Nige- ria on this Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord which is the revelation of Jesus to the Nations. Your charity has impacted posi- tively, the lives of so many who are also our brothers and sisters in Christ, thank you. On the first epiphany the Magi visit the baby Jesus with gifts of Gold (sign of kingship), Frankincense (sign of His priesthood) and Myrrh (a sign that He is the Christ- anointed one and the one who will die for the of the world). Through their valuable gifts God reveals to the Na- tions that Jesus is the King, and Messiah. So do your charitable deeds. I pray that what we give to God can also help us and others to know who He is in our lives.

On that note I want to use the opportunity to thank all of you for your love and gifts to God through our parish fami- ly. The liturgical ceremonies this Christmas, leading to the New Year, were very beautiful thanks to all of you in your various ways and levels of participation. In particular I want to thank, on behalf of our parish, those who helped us to worship with such beauty, solemnity and dignity. We are grateful to our Deacon, the entire Liturgy, Music and Arts and Environment teams. The Adult, Children Choirs, Ush- ers, Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers and especially our staff made a lot of sacrifices. Some of them had to be at many Masses to help. We thank them as we also thank all our parishioners for attending and for their generous gifts and support to our Parish. Thank you also to all of you who sent cards, messages of good wishes, gifts and prayerful support to me in person. May God bless and replenish all of you as we continue to work together to make our parish a wonderful and loving community.

On the Feast of Epiphany, I pray that our parish family here in St. Patrick may continue, through our involve- To the parishioners of SZ. Patrick ments, to reveal Jesus to our families, our community and indeed, to all nations of the world. Thank you from the Giving Tree Ministry! Yours in Christ, There are no words adequate to convey my sincere thanks to everyone that helped with the St. Patrick Giving Fr. Godwin Tree 2016. As usual, the responseFr. Godwin and the generosity Parish Staff of our parishioners was heartwarming. Thank you from the bot- tom of my heart to all of you that donated the gifts for Her- itage Woods senior. Thank you too all of the unsung workers, Jim and Sandy Perdue, Sue and Dick Robinson, Shelly Knight, John Pitzen, Carleen Murphy and most of all, Fr. Godwin for encouraging us to continue this pro- gram. St. Patrick is so blessed by people who quietly continue to assist those less fortunate.

The last major feast of the Christmas Season, in fact - the last day of the Christmas Season - is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is usually celebrated on the Sunday after Epiphany Sunday, except in years like this one, when Epiphany is celebrated on January 7th or 8th. Then this feast is celebrated on the Monday after Epiphany. The baptism of Jesus is a significant event. Mark’s Gospel, the earliest Gospel written, begins with the preaching of and the Baptism of Jesus. In all three synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke), at the baptism of Jesus the spirit of God descends like a dove upon Jesus and a voice from heaven pronounces Jesus to be my beloved Son. In these three Gospels, it is immediately following Jesus’ baptism that he is tempted by Satan, and it is immediate- ly after this temptation that Jesus begins his public ministry. This year we hear Matthew.

In John’s Gospel, as soon as John the Baptist gives testimony to Jesus, witnessing to the descent of the Spirit in the form of a dove upon Jesus, Jesus calls his first disciples. And this is immediately followed by Jesus’ first miracle - changing water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana.

We are baptized with water. Either we are immersed in the water, or it is poured over us. We recall our baptism with the sprinkling of water, and by blessing ourselves with holy water. As you celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, make sure to have a bowl of holy water as the centerpiece of your dinner table. Sing Christmas carols for the last time this Christmas Season!

Yes, baptism is a significant event! Not just for Jesus, but for each one of us. It is in baptism that we die and rise with Christ. It is in baptism that we enter the Church, the Body of Christ. It is in baptism that we become children of God. It is in baptism that we are anointed priest, prophet and king. So as we come to the conclusion of this Christmas Season, let us celebrate not only Jesus’ baptism, but our own. And let us continue to remember and celebrate our baptism each and every day as we follow Jesus this New Year The Four Symbols of Baptism 1. Water 2. Anointing with Chrism

Basic Facts Liturgical Color: Green Time of Year: The Monday following the Baptism of the Lord (end of Christmas), until the Tuesday before Ash Wednes- day; Monday following Pentecost until the evening before Advent Duration: Total of 33 or 34 weeks Celebrates/Symbolizes: The complete mystery of Christ Alternate Names: "Sundays of the Year"; tempus per annum

The Tempus Per Annum ("time throughout the year") is rendered into English as "Ordinary Time." Many sources, suggest that Ordinary Time is derived from the word ordinal, meaning "numbered," since the Sundays of Ordinary Time are ordered numerically. However, other sources suggest the etymology of "Ordinary Time" is related to our word "ordinary" (which itself has a connotation of time and order, derived from the Latin word ordo). According to The General Norms for the and the Calendar, the days of Ordinary Time, especially the Sundays, "are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects."

Basically, Ordinary Time encompasses that part of the Christian year that does not fall within the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter. The Catholic Church celebrates two periods of the year as Ordinary Time. The first period begins after the Feast Baptism of the Lord (the Sunday after The Epiphany) has ended. Some interpret this to mean that Ordinary Time begins on Sunday night, while others, including The General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calen- dar, specifically mention the first period of Ordinary Time beginning on the Monday after the Baptism of the Lord. Either way, the point is the same. The next Sunday is still reckoned "The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time," because it is the Sunday of the second week in Ordinary Time. This first period of Ordinary Time runs until the Tuesday evening before Ash Wednesday. The Second period of Ordinary Time runs from the Monday after Pentecost until Evening Prayer is said the night before Advent begins. This includes Christ the King Sunday, the final Sunday of Ordinary Time."

Ordinary time does not need to be "ordinary," and is not somehow a "break" from the Liturgical Year. The opposite is actually true: Ordinary Time celebrates "the mystery of Christ in all its aspects." Many important liturgical celebrations fall during Ordinary Time, including, , Corpus Christi, All , the , and Christ the King. The ma- jor feasts, when occurring on a Sunday, trump the regular Ordinary Time Sunday lessons and liturgy. We also may re- member and celebrate the parts of Jesus' life that were ordinary, much like our own lives. The color of green is appropri- ate because it is the most ordinary color in our natural environment.

St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish Registration - Do You Need to Register?

ARE YOU: (1) New to the parish; (2) Moving back; (3) Just Married; (4) Attending mass but never officially registered? (4) Even if you grew up in St. Patrick, you (as an adult) need to register independent from your parents.

Please do not take your church registration for granted. Attending Mass is not enough; there must be an official rec- ord of your membership in the Parish. Parish registration is essential for many reasons. It becomes important when you or your family members are receiving the Sacraments - First Communion, Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage. Registration is also required for those wishing to become a Baptism or Confirmation sponsor.
