PASTOR’S LETTER: 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Venerable Emeritus Benedict XVI

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

Since I was serving chaplain for the retreat at the Palisades last week, this week’s Pastor Letter will be brief! I simply want to share with you the quote from Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, that I mentioned at the end of my homily at Saint Rita and Saint Pat’s last weekend. She speaks of how God raises up at just the right times in history. I found a quote from Pope Benedict along those same lines for your reflection. Friends, we are all called to be saints; to be the holy men and women God raises up to be instruments of his healing grace to our families, our community, our Church and the world. These are powerful words to ponder along the way:

“As a convert, I never expected much of bishops. In all history, and bishops and father abbots seem to have been blind and power-loving and greedy. I never expected leadership from them. It is the saints that keep appearing all through history who keep things going. What I do expect is the bread of life and down through the ages there is that continuity.” - Venerable Dorothy Day

“The future of the Church can and will issue from those whose roots are deep and who live from the pure fullness of their faith. It will not issue from those who accommodate themselves merely to the passing moment or from those who merely criticize others and assume that they themselves are infallible measuring rods; nor will it issue from those who take the easier road, who sidestep the passion of faith. The future of the Church, once again as always, will be shaped by saints, by those, that is, whose minds probe deeper than the slogans of the day, who see more than others see, because their lives embrace a wider reality." – Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

Blessings for the week ahead!

As we enter into a ‘new normal’ for our three parishes sharing one pastor, a representative catechist from each of the three parishes met to discuss how we might proceed with Religious Education in this new model. We discussed the options and we prayed. Given our limited resources, and the fact that Fr. David would like to be a part of this program when he is available, we came to the conclusion that one program for the three parishes would be best.

Having had these conversations together, and individually discerning God’s will, we are now ready to move forward. “Family Religious Education” for Holy Cross, St. Rita, and St. Patrick, will be held on Wednesday evenings at the St. Patrick Parish Center. Our first class will be held on October 3rd from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. We will meet each Wednesday evening except the third Wednesday of the month. This program is for children and their families up through age 12.

To register for Religious Education, go to the children link, under the Faith Formation tab on our website - www.saintpats.org. The fee of $40.00 can be paid on line under the same Faith Formation tab or by check or cash. Checks should be made payable to St. Patrick Parish.

This program was designed for our Public School, Home School and other private schools (in other words, children not attending St. Patrick school) children and their families. Although, we welcome anyone who would like to be a part of this wonderful, informative program.

Thank you to all who donated to last year's Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl program. We raised $7,707.17. That's a 144% increase from the year before. Seventy-five percent of donations will go to CRS humanitarian aid projects serving the poorest of the poor overseas. The other 25% remains here in the Seattle Archdiocese, funding programs to alleviate hunger and poverty in our own local communities. Be assured, your donations are vital to the efforts of supporting the less fortunate here and throughout the world.

Liturgy Line - Why No Gluten Free Hosts?

The Vatican has stated that hosts that are completely free of gluten are invalid matter for the celebration of the Eucharist. Hosts valid for consecration must be made with some degree of wheat.

St. Patrick Catholic Church does offer low gluten hosts. Anyone desiring to receive such should approach the celebrating down the center of the aisle and verbally request the host. Acknowledging that even the lowest amount of gluten can be harmful to someone with Celiac Disease, it is important to remember that receiving the Precious Blood from the cup alone is still a complete and valid reception of Eucharist and in- cludes the recipient in full communion with the rest of the congregation.

St. Vincent de Paul

Your donations to the monthly St. Vincent de Paul collection make it possible for St. Patrick Vincentians to make home visits and help low (or no) income residents within St. Patrick Parish boundaries, who struggle to pay for life's necessities, such as utilities, food, gasoline, beds

and clothes.

Monetary collections take place the first weekend of each month.

Any donation you can give is appreciated. ST. PATRICK 11
