On September 22, our seventh grade students will participate in Confirmation Enrollment as they begin preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in eighth grade. The actual Confirmation preparation is a two year program of instruction as mandated by the Archdiocese. First Communion Enrollment will be on September 29. Many stories in the an- cient world tell of a great flood, but only the biblical sto- ry weaves into it God’s profound mercy which ex- ceeds our sinfulness. After the flood, the first thing Noah does is offer a sacrifice to the Lord. When God smells the sweet odor of Noah’s sacri- fice, he promises never to doom the earth again because of human sin. Our narrative opens with God making a covenant with humanity. The marker recognizes Saint Patrick Catholic Church as the first parish in the state established on Aug 6, 1821 as recounted in Bishop England’s journal. Under the North Carolina (N.C.) Catholic Church Constitutional Convention held in Fayetteville the parish was placed under the protection of Saint Patrick on February 4, 1824, and became the first Catholic Church consecrated in North Carolina on March 17, 1829. The historical marker is significant as N.C. has only erected 1,400 historical markers since the designation process started in the 1930’s. Only 150 of the 1400 note religious people or institutions and just six reflect the birth and development of Catholicism. The marker was dedicated on March 17, 1997. This Calendar is used by authors of ordines and other liturgical aids published to foster the celebration of the liturgy in our country. The Calendar is based upon the General Roman Calendar, promulgated by Pope Saint Paul VI on February 14, 1969, subsequently amended by the Holy See, and the Proper Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States of America, approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.1 This Calendar has been updated to reflect the names and titles of the various liturgical days in conformity with the Roman Missal, Third Edition. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal reminds us that in the cycles of readings and prayers proclaimed throughout the year in the sacred liturgy “the mysteries of redemption are celebrated so as to be in some way made present.” Thus may each celebration of the Holy Eucharist which is served by this Calendar be for the Church in the United States of America “the high point both of the action by which God sanctifies the world in Christ and of the worship that the human race offers to the Father, adoring him through Christ, the Son of God, in the Holy Spirit.”2 Sincerely in Christ, Rev.
