Fadel** INTRODUCTION Ancient' and modern-day adoption statutes balance the interests of children, birth parents, adoptive parents, states, and countries. St. Bede©s historical survey opens with a broad outline of Roman Britain©s geography and history. St. Bede pays special attention to the disagreement between Roman and Celtic Christians, the dates and locations of significant events in the Christian calendar, and political upheaval during the 600©s. St. Bede collected information from a variety of monasteries, early Church and government writings, and the oral histories of Rome and Britain. This book is useful to people looking for a brief survey of religious and political fig- ures and events in Anglo-Saxon history. Readers should re- cognize that St. Bede©s religious and political biases are subtly reflected in his historiography, diminishing its objectiv- ity. Nonetheless, his Ecclesiastical History of England is one of the most important texts of the Anglo-Saxon history. The book©s historical import is evidenced by the fact that nearly 200 hand written copies were produced in the Middle Ages. St. Bede©s text has since been translated into several different languages. Today we are focusing on our Faith Formation Ministries which help us provide faith filled experiences leading us to live out our Catholic faith and traditions in our daily lives. Visit our displays in the Narthex after Mass and ask any questions you may have about how you can participate more fully as a part of our faith community. As you do this, please enjoy refreshments at our Welcome Café. Today we begin our SRE classes for the new program year. Students and their parents attend the 9:00 AM Mass each Sunday. At this Mass today, our fourth grade students and the students in our Sacramental Prep classes will be receiving their Bibles. On September 22, our seventh grade students will participate in Confirmation Enrollment as they begin preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in eighth grade. The actual Confirmation preparation is a two year program of instruction as mandated by the Archdiocese. First Communion Enrollment will be on September 29. Today I will be speaking to you about the RCIA program which begins on September 22 and the upcoming Light of the World Retreat to be held in October. -

Many stories in the an- cient world tell of a great flood, but only the biblical sto- ry weaves into it God’s profound mercy which ex- ceeds our sinfulness. After the flood, the first thing Noah does is offer a sacrifice to the Lord. When God smells the sweet odor of Noah’s sacri- fice, he promises never to doom the earth again because of human sin. Our narrative opens with God making a covenant with humanity. It is not Saint Patrick Parish simply repeating the original blessing given to the 130 East 4th Street first man and woman; but now God establishes a covenant not only with Noah, but with his de- Erie, PA 16507 scendants and every living creature that comes out of the ark. I simply want to share with you the quote from Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, that I mentioned at the end of my homily at Saint Rita and Saint Pat’s last weekend. She speaks of how God raises up saints at just the right times in history. I found a quote from Pope Benedict along those same lines for your reflection. Friends, we are all called to be saints; to be the holy men and women God raises up to be instruments of his healing grace to our families, our community, our Church and the world. -

A COMMENTARY ON JEROME’S CONTRA VIGILANTIUM BY AMY HYE OH DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Classical Philology with a concentration in Medieval Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Danuta Shanzer Professor Ralph Mathisen Professor Jon Solomon Professor Stephan Heilan, University of Osnabrück ABSTRACT Innkeepers inspired this dissertation. After working on ‘innkeepers’ as a topic for a research seminar paper, I soon discovered that the term caupo counted as an insult according to several church fathers, including Jerome. In the Contra Vigilantium, Jerome mocked his enemy, Vigilantius, by calling him a caupo who mixed water with wine; I wondered whether the title was true and the insult was deserved. What remained was to figure out who this man was and why he mattered. The dissertation is comprised of four parts: introductory chapters, a text with an en face translation, a philological/historical commentary, and appendices. The first chapter introduces Vigilantius, discusses why a commentary of the Contra Vigilantium is needed, and provides a biography, supported by literary and historical evidence in response to the bolder and more fanciful account of W.S. Gilly.1 The second chapter treats Vigilantius as an exegete. From a sample of his exegesis preserved in Jerome’s Ep. 61, I determine that Jerome dismissed Vigilantius’ exegesis because he wanted to protect his own orthodoxy. The third chapter situates Vigilantius in the debate on relic worship. His position is valuable because he opposed most of his contemporaries, decrying relics instead of supporting their translation and veneration. -

As it turned out, few observers at the time were able to abide by this providential explicit and Prosper, despite his zeal for combining chronicle ' Prosper, Epitomachronicon, a. 430 (ed. Ancient Church History Semi-Pelagianism, Semi-Augustinianism, and the Synod of Orange (529) Pastor Charles R. Biggs Review of Pelagius and Augustine/ Council of Ephesus (431) Pelagius was a British monk, a very zealous preacher who was castrated for the sake of the kingdom and given to rigorous asceticism. He desired to live a life of perfect holiness. In Christian history, he has come to be the arch-heretic of the church, but in his early writings he was very orthodox and sought to maintain and uphold the creeds of the early church. Pelagius came from Rome to Carthage in the year 410 AD (after Alaric I had captured Rome) with his friend and student Celestius. He taught the people of North Africa a new emphasis on morals and the rigorous life of living the Gospel, because he was shocked by the low tone of Roman morals and thought that Augustine’s teaching on divine grace contributed to the immorality. Celestius, who was the most prominent follower of Pelagius at the time, was condemned at the Council of Carthage in 411 because he denied the transmission of Adam’s sins to his descendants. Augustine began to write and preach again Pelagius and Celestius’ doctrines. Pelagius and Celestius were condemned at two councils at Carthage and Milevis (Numidia, North Africa) in 416 and Innocent I (410-17) excommunicated them from the church. On May 1, 418 the Council of Carthage convened to issue a series of nine canons affirming without compromise the Augustinian doctrine of the Fall and Original Sin. Emperor Honorius (395-423) issued an imperial decree denouncing the teachings of Pelagius and Celestius in that same year. -

In Fall 2018, she spent the semester abroad in Galway, Ireland, where she had the opportunity to study the Irish-Christian tradition in its original context. Unsurprisingly, the figure of St. Patrick was broached early in the course. Fascinated by the myriad of ways religion has influenced the development of literature, Molly decided to write her term paper on the conflicting images of St. Patrick found in the saint’s own writings and in the dramatic accounts of his life written by hagiographers in the centuries following his death. PATRICK, THE TRIVIUM, AND CHRISTIAN COMMUNICATION JENNIFER KARYN REID While Ireland’s previous exposure to Christianity and the Roman Empire, its ongoing contact with Britain, as well as the papal mission of Palladius to Ireland, precludes consideration of Patrick as the sole figure of Irish conversion to Christianity and “civilization,”1 the implications of the Patrician theme are substantial.
