NON-TRIVIAL PURSUITS Weekly challenge from your Faith Formation Team (5-26-2019) Thursday is the Feast of the Ascension, celebrating Jesus’ bodily return to Heaven. In most of the United States, this will be celebrated next Sunday. Why, and What is this called? Answer to Last Week’s Question: (5-19-2019) “Heaven” is the abode of God, and since the Resurrection, the souls of those who die in God’s grace and friend- ship enter into His presence there (after purification, if needed), where they see Him “face to face.” At the end of the age, when the dead are resurrection, God will renew creation and we will live in His Presence on the New Earth in our Resurrected bodies. (CCC 1023and1043) Please remember in your prayers: Cameron Conley, Lexz Bragdom, Brenda Lamarre, Moe Facques, Timothy Russell, Maureen Belair, Marty, Leo Barriault, Jack & Nancy Moro, Wendy Boucher, Mary Ann Hower, Ronald & Jean Rood, Ron Lockwood, Connor Sillowy, Eva, Carolyn Hassett, Lyn, Bettina Mace, Vera Rasmussen, Karen Jarest, Marie Roccio, Thomas Burkardt, Ben & Anne Marie Yorio, Don- ald Labonte, William, JoAnn & John, Gus Dreher, Dorothy Calogero, Tiffany Brown, Raymond Coté, Irene Dion, Eugene Callahan, Andrea, Sophia Lamarche, Brundage family, Genie Stone, Coralee Smart, Marie, Frances, Arlene, Georgian, Jeanne, Sue, Dennis Creedon, Paul Golch, John Foss, Rob Erick- son, Jenny Ciotti, Dan Nelson, Denise Bergeron, Alice Creighton, Liz Richer, Luke LaVallee, John, Mike Paxton, Isa- belle Miller, Marc Belanger, Helen R., Claudette Blais, Kim Beebe, Anne Ronsov, Jack Long, Beth Powers, Scott Dickinson, Nenad Opijac, Jack Daniels, John Knott, Joseph Koprek, Bobby Holland, Lillie & Damien, Benjamin Smith, Patti Patenaude, Jeffrey Yorio, Lisa Yorio, Blanche Belanger, Cheryl Williams, Ken Hower, Jeff MacMartin, Margaret Nelson, Mindy Kane, Linda Lewis, Susan Yorio, Richard Copeland, Wayne Cormier, Robert Merley, Jeffrey Bryant, Crystal Heaney, Leah Stigliano, Philip McPhee, William Thompson, Sammy Tinaglia, Joseph Sherlock, John Sullivan, Alice & Lloyd Eskins, Mary & Dick Almy, Steven Perez, Elda Paduano, Meaghan Pezze, and for the men and women who are serving our country. Many stories in the an- cient world tell of a great flood, but only the biblical sto- ry weaves into it God’s profound mercy which ex- ceeds our sinfulness. After the flood, the first thing Noah does is offer a sacrifice to the Lord. When God smells the sweet odor of Noah’s sacri- fice, he promises never to doom the earth again because of human sin. Our narrative opens with God making a covenant with humanity. It is not Saint Patrick Parish simply repeating the original blessing given to the 130 East 4th Street first man and woman; but now God establishes a covenant not only with Noah, but with his de- Erie, PA 16507 scendants and every living creature that comes out of the ark. PATRICK SCHOOL COMMUNITY LIFE 2 PASTOR’S LETTER: 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Venerable Dorothy Day Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Since I was serving chaplain for the priest retreat at the Palisades last week, this week’s Pastor Letter will be brief! I simply want to share with you the quote from Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, that I mentioned at the end of my homily at Saint Rita and Saint Pat’s last weekend. She speaks of how God raises up saints at just the right times in history. I found a quote from Pope Benedict along those same lines for your reflection. Friends, we are all called to be saints; to be the holy men and women God raises up to be instruments of his healing grace to our families, our community, our Church and the world.

Your tour through Saint Patrick Catholic Church The clergy, Church staff, and the parishioners of Saint Patrick Catholic Church would like to welcome you on a guided tour of this wonderful new house of worship. As you move through the church we would ask that you kindly keep your voices low for the sake of those parishioners and visitors who may be here in prayer 2844 Village Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28304-3813 Telephone: 910-323-2410 Email: [email protected] http://www.stpatnc.org/ (Tour begins at the replica of the historical marker to the left of the entrance to the Church – Station 1) We begin our tour of Saint Patrick Catholic Church here at this replica of the actual historical marker that is located at the corner of Owen and Village Drive. The marker recognizes Saint Patrick Catholic Church as the first parish in the state established on Aug 6, 1821 as recounted in Bishop England’s journal. Under the North Carolina (N.C.) Catholic Church Constitutional Convention held in Fayetteville the parish was placed under the protection of Saint Patrick on February 4, 1824, and became the first Catholic Church consecrated in North Carolina on March 17, 1829. The historical marker is significant as N.C. has only erected 1,400 historical markers since the designation process started in the 1930’s. Only 150 of the 1400 note religious people or institutions and just six reflect the birth and development of Catholicism. The marker was dedicated on March 17, 1997. Are there any questions at this time? If not, we will walk over to the Grand Plaza.

LITURGICAL CALENDAR FOR THE DIOCESES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 2022 Committee on Divine Worship LITURGICAL CALENDAR FOR THE DIOCESES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 2022 United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Divine Worship Cover Photo: Getty Images Copyright © 2020, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC. All rights reserved. No part of this work may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, recording, or by any information storage and retrieval system, without permission in writing from the copyright holder. 2 INTRODUCTION Each year the Secretariat of Divine Worship of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops publishes the Liturgical Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States of America. This Calendar is used by authors of ordines and other liturgical aids published to foster the celebration of the liturgy in our country. The Calendar is based upon the General Roman Calendar, promulgated by Pope Saint Paul VI on February 14, 1969, subsequently amended by the Holy See, and the Proper Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States of America, approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.1 This Calendar has been updated to reflect the names and titles of the various liturgical days in conformity with the Roman Missal, Third Edition. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal reminds us that in the cycles of readings and prayers proclaimed throughout the year in the sacred liturgy “the mysteries of redemption are celebrated so as to be in some way made present.” Thus may each celebration of the Holy Eucharist which is served by this Calendar be for the Church in the United States of America “the high point both of the action by which God sanctifies the world in Christ and of the worship that the human race offers to the Father, adoring him through Christ, the Son of God, in the Holy Spirit.”2 Sincerely in Christ, Rev.
