Dear People of God,

Welcome to the first weekend of our September Ministry Fair here at St. Pat’s. Today we are focusing on our Faith Formation Ministries which help us provide faith filled experiences leading us to live out our Catholic faith and traditions in our daily lives. Visit our displays in the Narthex after Mass and ask any questions you may have about how you can participate more fully as a part of our faith community. As you do this, please enjoy refreshments at our Welcome Café.

Today we begin our SRE classes for the new program year. Students and their parents attend the 9:00 AM Mass each Sunday. At this Mass today, our fourth grade students and the students in our Sacramental Prep classes will be receiving their Bibles. On September 22, our seventh grade students will participate in Confirmation Enrollment as they begin preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in eighth grade. The actual Confirmation preparation is a two year program of instruction as mandated by the Archdiocese. First Communion Enrollment will be on September 29.

Today I will be speaking to you about the RCIA program which begins on September 22 and the upcoming Light of the World Retreat to be held in October.

Our parish choirs return today to lead us in our communal worship each Lord’s Day. Their gift of music enables us to praise the Lord by our full, active, and conscious participating each time we are present at the Eucharist which is the source and summit of our Catholic life. What a great gift this is to us!

We need persons to lead our Children’s Chapel each Sunday at the 9:00 AM Mass. We will help you prepare to share with our young ones each week. The children go to the classroom(s) with the leader after the opening prayer and return to Mass after the homily and Profession of Faith.

Our Welcome Ministry needs volunteers at every Mass to be part of this hospitality endeavor each week. This Ministry involves greeting parishioners/visitors before Mass and taking up the collection during the Presentation of the Gifts. Training will be provided; men, women, young adults and families are encouraged to help us as we extend our radical hospitality to all who come through our doors each week to join us in worship. In the near future we will introduce our new ministry head of our Welcome Ministry.

Please save the date of Saturday, November 9; our annual auction will be held that evening. This year’s auction will have a new venue as well as an enticing format. It will be a pleasant and enjoyable evening as we help fund our excellent education Ministry. I enjoyed last year’s auction and I am excitedly looking forward to this year’s as well.

Our new Director of Faith Formation will begin her Ministry among us within a month. More information will be forthcoming.

In Christ our Brother, Fr. Merold

The Son shines on a new day! Together Achieving Our Parish Mission

On the first weekend of our Ministry Fair, we are highlighting our FAITH FORMATION MINISTRIES, the group of ministries consists of:  Baptismal preparation  Bible study  Light of the World retreats  Parish school  Respect life  Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)  School of Religious Education (SRE)  Sword of the Spirit (SOS)  Vacation Bible school

This ministry group works hard to provide faith filled experiences of faith in action! Faith formation for all ages is at the core of our identity as baptized members of the Church. Without formation in our faith, our understanding of traditions, rituals and personal growth would be non-existent.

Spiritual life is based on movement and growth. There are many hard working individuals, donating time and talent involved with faith formation. Without this group of ministers, we would not have the breadth of understanding we need in our Catholic experience. The Parish Light of the World Retreats, parish school, RCIA, SRE, prayer groups, Bible study, just to name a few, form the “backbone” of our parish community. It is through this group that we discern the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Everyone who searches for God desires to feel that God is guiding their lives. That guidance comes in the form of and interaction with God within an intimate personal relationship and with the entire way of life of the community. These ministries would be beneficial for people who like to participate in

Attention Parents If your child needs to use the washroom during Mass, we ask that a parent accompany him/her. Our Church is located on a very busy road, and our building is accessible to anyone during our scheduled Mass.

Knights of Columbus

St High School, the Saint Patrick food pantry and the Knights Coats for Kids program are among the many beneficiaries of the charitable funds raised by the St Patrick Council. Our annual Golf Outing which is on Saturday, September 14 at Brae Loch Golf Course, is our largest fundraising activity. Knights will be in the Narthex this weekend to sign up golfers and sell raffle tickets. Please join us and help to support our Parish and community.

Compassionate Caring In the Catholic Tradition

When you have experienced a death in your family and when a loved one dies, the task of making arrangements for the funeral Mass can seem overwhelming. We at St. Patrick’s are here to walk with you in your time of need. We have a compassionate Ministry of Bereavement that will assist you at this time.

Once your funeral director of choice has notified our Parish Office of a death and a funeral request and a time for the Mass is set, one of our Bereavement Ministers will contact you and set a time to meet with you to plan the readings and music for the Mass of Christian Burial.

If you are not using a funeral home and are hoping to plan a memorial Mass, please call our Parish Office at 847-244-4161 and we will lead you through the process. If you call outside of regular office hours, you may call Fr. Merold at his private number (224-321-2184). All of the local funeral directors have Fr. Merold’s number as well.

If you need to request the Church’s Sacrament of Anointing of the sick for someone who is ill or close to death, you may call the Parish Office or Fr. Merold’s number. We will try to accommodate this request as soon as possible. There are times when Father is already taking care of Masses or the Sacraments or pastoral emergencies. Please leave a message and he will contact you as soon as possible. Saturdays and Sundays are problematic at times. These two days can be almost completely booked due to Masses, weddings, , Funerals and other Ministrations. Every effort will be made to speak with you and schedule a visit. If your loved one is in a local hospital, please have the floor nurse or chaplain’s office assist you in reaching a local so that your relative can be seen as soon as possible. While a Deacon may be able to visit and pray with you, only an ordained priest can administer the Sacrament of the Anointing. This is because this Sacrament also confers the forgiveness of and only a priest can celebrate that ritual.

Every one of us who is Catholic should keep a card in our wallets or purse that says, “I am Catholic. In the event of an accident or serious illness, please call a Roman Catholic Priest.” You can get one of these cards at a Catholic book store or other religious organizations. (I keep one in my wallet and update the information frequently).

If you are having surgery or other medical procedures, please request a priest to pray over you and administer this Sacrament of Christ and His church. Read about it in the Epistle of St. James in your Bible. (James, Chapter 5).

Also, on the first weekend of the month, our Sword of the Sprit Prayer Warriors are present in our Church Chapel to pray with you for healing and spiritual strength in times of illness and other needs.

Need prayer? To request prayer, see our link on the home page of the Parish website or email us at [email protected].

Do you have a story about how our prayer ministry has affected your life or how your own prayer life has been affected? please email us and let us know. We would like to give God praise!

Do You Need to Borrow Crutches or a Walker? We have several sets of crutches and walkers which can be out for an indefinite period of time. Please call Joan at 847-662-1150 if you are in need.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Leader Needed

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLW) is an important Ministry offered to the young children of St. Patrick Parish to encourage prayer and worship and to invoke excitement in Mass participation. CLW is offered weekly throughout the year at the 9 AM Mass to children in kindergarten through second grade. Children are “collected” after the Opening Blessing and brought to rooms upstairs in the church to receive the Gospel and Gospel message in terms that young children can understand. They work on a craft after learning about the message for the week and are returned to Mass after the Prayer of Intentions.

Job Requirements:  Love of children  Ability to work with children in grades Kindergarten-2nd grade  Ability to be a of Jesus and share His Word with children

Job Duties:  Organize a small group of adult and student volunteers  Maintain schedule for volunteers (monthly)  Email volunteers weekly with session information (Gospel reading, handouts and craft information)  Copy weekly handouts for CLW sessions (from provided materials)  Determine and create weekly crafts to go with CLW weekly sessions

This is a position open to any adult of our Parish. Perhaps two or more could lead this and take turns for various months. Currently, there is no one to run this program. If no one steps up to take over this Ministry, it will be omitted. Please pray over this and let your heart lead you!

If you have any questions, please contact Lori at [email protected] or (847) 871-7135.

Food Pantry News The St. Pat’s Food Pantry shelves are well stocked thanks to the generous donations of our Parish families. Our Pantry staff members are often asked “What does the Food Pantry need?” Below is a list of items that are needed to fill a typical food box:

 Hot and cold cereal  Pancake mix and syrup  Jiffy corn bread mix, Jell-O, pudding mix, and baking supplies  Pasta or noodles and spaghetti sauce, canned tuna, canned chicken, boxed macaroni and cheese, Hamburger Helper  Peanut butter and jelly  Canned fruits and vegetables including corn, green beans, legumes (kidney, great northern or black beans), tomatoes, peas, carrots  Spaghetti O's, Chef Boyardee ravioli, baked beans, Ramen noodles  Instant potatoes, stuffing mix, rice  Canned soup, cake mix, crackers, granola bars, cookies  Bottled juices, hot chocolate packets, condiments  Paper products (toilet paper, facial tissues, paper towels)  Toiletries (bar soap, toothpaste, shampoo)

We often receive donations of other items and distribute them to our clients, if appropriate. A good rule of thumb is if your family likes something, chances are our clients will too!

Keep in mind that we cannot distribute any medications including vitamins or pain killers like aspirin or Tylenol. Also, please do not donate pet food, feminine hygiene products, contact lens solution, eye drops or opened packages of any kind.

Now that our summer gardeners have a lot of surplus produce on their hands, please think of donating your bounty to the Food Pantry. You may drop off your “crops” during Food Pantry hours—Monday through Friday, 9 AM to noon. Please do not put fresh foods in the donation boxes in the Main Church.

Our Parish plays a vital role in being the hands and feet of Christ, reaching out to the less fortunate. Thank you for your donations, support and prayers.

Men’s Legacy Retreat The Men’s Legacy Workshop is a time away from your routine. It is built for men of heart, humor and thoughtfulness…men who ask great questions within themselves, men who seek meaning, and men who are looking to put together a fuller, more authentic life. We commit ourselves to doing this in great company. The men of St. (Libertyville) and St. (Gurnee) invite you to join us at the next Men’s Legacy Workshop, on November 9th and 10th, hosted at St. Joseph’s Parish.

During the weekend, you will hear from a number of men from our parishes sharing stories of change, challenge, impact, doubt, transitions, instincts for faith, and where they are with the movement of God in their lives. The weekend concludes on Sunday afternoon with our own Mass.

The Men’s Legacy Workshop is just $65 to cover costs for meals, weekend materials and refreshments. (Scholarships are available if money is tight; just ask). You can go to the parish website to sign up: http://www.stjoseph- libertyville.org/registration-for-men or fill in the registration form with volunteers who will be in the Narthex starting sometime in September. Watch the bulletin for exact dates.

NM 21: 4-9 Psalms 78: 1-2, 34-38 On Welcome Café weekends beverages and snacks are served immediately following PHIL 2: 6-11 each Mass. Right now I am seeking help to make coffee, set the tables, and cleanup for John 3: 13-17 each Mass on these four weekends (5 PM on Saturdays and 7, 9, and 11 AM on Sunday Sundays). This is a great service opportunity for students needing service hours! EX 32: 7-11, 13-14 Beyond September, this Ministry remains vital for greeting and welcoming parishioners Psalms 51: 3-4, 12-13, 17, 19 and it needs assistance to keep it moving forward. Typically, the Welcome Café is open 1 TM 1: 12-17 on the second weekend of each month. It sometimes moves if there is a special Luke 15: 1-32 occasion that is happening within the Church that we want to capture. The Welcome Café is on hiatus during Lent and resumes following Easter. The Church will financially support the purchases of the treats and drink, but we need volunteers to come forward to make this a successful Ministry to serve our fellow congregants.

Please prayerfully consider the tasks at hand and let me know how you might be able to help. If interested, or for more information, please contact Karen Braunling at 847-702- 5025 or [email protected]
