Rickenbacker confirms plans for new air traffic control tower

As Rickenbacker International Airport continues to grow as a world-class logistics hub for the 21st century, a new state-of-the-art air traffic control tower will soon be constructed to replace the WWII-era tower that is currently in operation.

“The new control tower will be a very modern structure with separate meeting and training offices, more space for controller utilization and new communication radios and equipment,” said Eric Hensley, Senior Manager, Project Management, Planning & Engineering. “The facility will be ADA compliant and fully up-to-date with current building standards. There will also be updated security cameras and access controls.”

The office space adjacent to the existing tower has been vacated since 2004 and the facility has outlived its useful life expectancy. After much research, it was determined it would not be physically or economically sound to simply update the current tower.

Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2014 and the new tower should be complete in December 2015. The current tower will remain operational during the construction to prevent any disruption in operations. Staying CONNECTED
