WHAT MOVES YOU?

hat moves you? According to Ramon , it isn’t cars. His assemblage shows the ultimate rush hour W horror. Many other members turned to transportation themes. Rick Lucia’s “N41HQ” is a photograph of a classic airplane. Charlotte Seekamp’s quiet, evocative photos of bicycles reminded this reviewer of photo- graphs from a 1950s issue of Life or National Geographic. Jeff Hill’s “Rust Bucket” actually uses an old bicycle as “found art.” Richard Herring’s bold and playful acrylic, “He Felt Like He Was Always Driv- ing In Circles,” was understandably a quick sale. Other members turned to nature for their inspiration. Susan DeLora’s ceramic fish “Untitled” flows with color. Chai Henn’s acrylic “KOI” is a nice blend of eastern and western influences. Ingrid Brook- Ramon Bravo “Rush Hour” (assemblage) Kothlow’s mixed-media “Wild Seeds” is a quiet, Susan DeLora “Untitled” (ceramic) haunting piece. “Bearded & Dutch Irises & Poppies” by Frances Healey is a lovely impressionism. And one glance at Denise Bradley’s oil and you know you’re on the main trail at “San Pedro Park.” Music motivated a couple of members. Jean Lannen’s assemblage, “Something Anything,” is a tribute to her friend, the musician Todd Rundgren, and features a couple of his spinning albums. Rob Macha- Richard Herring “He Felt Ingrid Brook-Kothlow Like He Was Always Driv- “Wild Seeds” do’s acrylic, “World Tour,” is a banner to the band Rush. ing In Circles” (acrylic) (mixed media) Still others turned inward to express themselves abstractly. Alice Kelmon’s watercolor, “Feather & Square,” is a series of controlled splatters that is a true delight. Mary Harris’ acrylic, “Form, Fun and Fantasy” flows with color and curling brushwork. Dominic Carrillo’s “In Praise of Bacchus” is an electric surge of color and bold lines. Gaila Jenning’s glass piece, “Broken Wheel,” glows with blue swirls and cop- per foil. And Deborah Corsini’s fiber, “Hot Flash” is vibrant pattern of recycled plastic and yarns. It’s an entertaining and “moving” show. Don’t forget; current and past shows can be viewed again in a digital slideshow on our website (www.artguildofpacifica.org). Charlotte Seekamp “Chained to a Pole” (silver gelatin print) ART OF THE BICYCLE Main Gallery

of the Bicycle, curated by Roy Tatman, is a rich, diverse show, dedicated to two-wheelers everywhere. The show A.originated at the Exploding Head Gallery in Sacramento and features the work of thirty artists. Linda Smith’s ceramic “Bicycle Dream” is an eye-catcher, as is Gale Hart’s sculpture, “Bears Don’t Ride Bikes.” David Limrite’s mixed-media on paper work “Solitary Spirit Respect” (below, left) is an intriguing reflection on a serious biker’s focus. Achizger’s “Bikes of Kobenhavn” has a playful Saul Steinberg feel to it. As does Mick Sheldon’s oil, “The Alleged Terrorist from Lodi Heads off into the Suburbs,” (bottom, right) but Sheldon’s work has a much darker edge. Steve Jones’ “Rubenesque Nude in an Expressionistic Cityscape Goes for a Ride,” (below, top) with it’s tattoo of a nude on a nude leg is mesmerizing. D.D. Fernandes’ “Messenger from Aero” has a strong Klee-like appearance to it. Sue Torngren’s digital photo concept, “Speed of Sound” is both witty and inspired. And, lastly, one can’t say enough about Miriam Mor- ris’ “Icon for a Biker: Our Lady Protectress of Inflated Inner- tubes,” a mixed media wall hanging. Even if you’re not a biker, you should roll on over to see this show.

Their exhibition, “Monet in —Claude Monet Normandy,” features many well-known paintings by this master of Impressionism. This writer was struck not only by Monet’s virtuos- ity but by the places he painted. So many of them reminds one of the Pacifica coast. Anyone who’s ever walked along Mori Point will be struck by similarities in Monet’s “The Cliff Wall, Pourville (left).” And “Chemin de la Cavee, Pourville” is reminiscent of a walk along the hillside trails in San Pedro Valley Park. Whether its the more traditional landscapes of the 1860s to the almost abstract “Waterlilies” series of the 1910s, this is a show to experience and learn from. It’s on view through September 17th.
