WHERE ARE THE AUDIENCES? Full Report Introduction • New Zealand On Air (NZ On Air) supports and funds audio and visual public media content for New Zealand audiences. It does so through the platform neutral NZ Media Fund which has four streams; scripted, factual, music, and platforms. • Given the platform neutrality of this fund and the need to efficiently and effectively reach both mass and targeted audiences, it is essential NZ On Air have an accurate understanding of the current and evolving behaviour of NZ audiences. • To this end NZ On Air conduct the research study Where Are The Audiences? every two years. The 2014 benchmark study established a point in time view of audience behaviour. The 2016 study identified how audience behaviour had shifted over time. • This document presents the findings of the 2018 study and documents how far the trends revealed in 2016 have moved and identify any new trends evident in NZ audience behaviour. • Since the 2016 study the media environment has continued to evolve. Key changes include: − Ongoing PUTs declines − Anecdotally at least, falling SKY TV subscription and growth of NZ based SVOD services − New TV channels (eg. Bravo, HGTV, Viceland, Jones! Too) and the closure of others (eg. FOUR, TVNZ Kidzone, The Zone) • The 2018 Where Are The Audiences? study aims to hold a mirror up to New Zealand and its people and: − Inform NZ On Air’s content and platform strategy as well as specific content proposals − Continue to position NZ On Air as a thought and knowledge leader with stakeholders including Government, broadcasters and platform owners, content producers, and journalists. -

Last.fm Wants to Become the Web's MTV 10 May 2007 Online social music site Last.fm is moving into the video realm, adding music videos with a goal of providing every video ever made. The site, which provides music recommendations based on user preferences, will be leveraging its music label relationships to bring artist video content to members. Users who currently sign up at Last.fm site provide it with the names of their favorite artists and the site then generates streaming music recommendations based on those entries. A plug- in also lets the site determine which music users actually play. Listeners then vote on whether they love or hate those recommendations, so that Last.fm has a better idea of what that user might enjoy. Last.fm intends to use the same model for music video content in order to create personalized video channels. The site promises higher quality than that of YouTube, with audio encoded at 128 Kbits/s on Last.fm compared to YouTube's 64 Kbits/s. Last.fm boasts partnerships with major labels like The EMI Group and Warner Music Group in addition to approximately 20,000 independent labels like Ninja Tune, Nettwerk Music Group, Domino, Warp, Atlantic and Mute. The intent is to have every music video ever made available on the site, "from the latest hits to underground obscurities to classics from the past," according to Last.fm. In November of last year, Last.fm launched a system that provides suggestions on upcoming performances based on user location and taste in music. -

COMP/M. 5482 – GSN / FUN SECTION 1.2 Description of the concentration The proposed transaction involves the acquisition by Game Show Network, LLC (GSN) of sole control over Fun Technologies Inc. (FUN) within the meaning of Article 3(1)(b) of the EC Merger Regulation. GSN is a joint venture between (i) an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Media Corporation (Liberty Media) and (ii) indirect wholly-owned subsidiaries of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc (SPE). FUN is an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Liberty Media. Immediately prior to the proposed transaction, SPE will have an indirect non-controlling interest, and Liberty Media will have an indirect controlling interest, in FUN. Liberty Media and SPE will contribute all of their interests in FUN to GSN. As a result, FUN will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of GSN. FUN is active in the publication and distribution of skill-based casual games to be played on its own websites and certain third-party websites. (The proposed transaction does not involve the Fun Sports division of FUN, which will be transferred to another subsidiary of Liberty Media prior to the proposed transaction.) GSN’s primary activity is the supply of the Game Show Network television channel to cable operators, satellite providers and telecommunications companies in the USA. -

To help inform the discussion, please find attached a copy of a recent Phoenix Center paper entitled A Retrospective Analysis of Vertical Mergers in Multichannel Video Programming Distribution Markets: The Comcast-NBCU Merger. In this paper, Phoenix Center Chief Economist Dr. George S. Ford presents a retrospective analysis of the price effects of the Comcast-NBCU merger. In particular, Dr. Ford conducts an econometric analysis of data on the prices paid for programming by multichannel video programing distributors (“MVPDs”) before and after the transaction and finds no evidence that Comcast’s programming prices rose after the merger. The analysis covers general interest programming, news channels, and national and regional sports networks. Given these results, Dr. Ford concludes that there is either a lack of a net positive effect on incentives to raise programming prices above competitive levels following the vertical merger or that the behavioral remedies placed on the Comcast-NBCU merger were effective. -

The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA), Africa’s biggest celebration of contemporary music, culture and achievement, kicks off at the Ticketpro Dome, Johannesburg, South Africa on 22 October 2016. The annual awards show, now in its sixth edition, is taking place in the city of Johannesburg for the first time ever.
