Where Are the Audiences?
WHERE ARE THE AUDIENCES? Full Report Introduction • New Zealand On Air (NZ On Air) supports and funds audio and visual public media content for New Zealand audiences. It does so through the platform neutral NZ Media Fund which has four streams; scripted, factual, music, and platforms. • Given the platform neutrality of this fund and the need to efficiently and effectively reach both mass and targeted audiences, it is essential NZ On Air have an accurate understanding of the current and evolving behaviour of NZ audiences. • To this end NZ On Air conduct the research study Where Are The Audiences? every two years. The 2014 benchmark study established a point in time view of audience behaviour. The 2016 study identified how audience behaviour had shifted over time. • This document presents the findings of the 2018 study and documents how far the trends revealed in 2016 have moved and identify any new trends evident in NZ audience behaviour. • Since the 2016 study the media environment has continued to evolve. Key changes include: − Ongoing PUTs declines − Anecdotally at least, falling SKY TV subscription and growth of NZ based SVOD services − New TV channels (eg. Bravo, HGTV, Viceland, Jones! Too) and the closure of others (eg. FOUR, TVNZ Kidzone, The Zone) • The 2018 Where Are The Audiences? study aims to hold a mirror up to New Zealand and its people and: − Inform NZ On Air’s content and platform strategy as well as specific content proposals − Continue to position NZ On Air as a thought and knowledge leader with stakeholders including Government, broadcasters and platform owners, content producers, and journalists. -

JMAD New Zealand Media Ownership Report 2014 Published: 2014 December 5 Author: Merja Myllylahti This New Zealand Ownership Report 2014 is the fourth published by AUT’s Centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD). The report finds that the New Zealand media market has failed to produce new, innovative media outlets, and that all the efforts to establish non-profit outlets have proved unsustainable. The report confirms the general findings of previous reports that New Zealand media space has remained highly commercial. It also confirms the financialisation of media ownership in the form of banks and fund managers. The report also observes that in 2014 convergence between New Zealand mass media and the communications sector generally was in full swing. Companies, such as Spark (former Telecom NZ), started to compete head-to-head with the traditional broadcasters on the online on-demand video and television markets. The American online video subscription service Netflix is entering the NZ market in March 2015. Additionally, the report notes evidence of uncomfortable alliances between citizen media, politicians, PR companies and legacy media. As Nicky Hager’s Dirty Politics book revealed, the National Party and PR practitioners used the Whale Oil blog to drive their own agendas. Also, events related to Maori TV, TVNZ and Scoop raise questions about political interference in media affairs. It is now evident that the boundaries between mainstream media, bloggers, public relations practitioners and politicians are blurring. Retail investor evenings will be held by the NZX in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland this week, offering a great chance for local attendees to increase their knowledge of companies listed on New Zealand’s exchange and ask the leaders of these businesses any questions. The exchange’s inaugural investor evenings sold out in 36 hours demonstrating the unprecedented demand from retail investors to hear first-hand from some of New Zealand’s most well-known businesses. NZX Head of Issuer Relationships Joanna Lawn commented: “Connecting retail investors and listed companies is part of our ongoing efforts to provide a better platform for customers to tell their stories, and to educate the New Zealand public about the benefits of investing in the share market.” “As an exchange we need to do our bit to encourage new investors into the New Zealand market and embark on their investing journey. These evenings are a simple but significant step towards achieving this.” World Investor Week is a global campaign promoted by International Organisation of Securities Commissions to raise awareness about the importance of investor education and protection, while highlighting the various initiatives of securities regulators in these two areas. JMAD New Zealand Media Ownership Report 2013 Published: November 28, 2013 Author: Merja Myllylahti This New Zealand Ownership Report 2013 published by AUT’s Centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD) outlines how the financialisation of New Zealand media intensified as News Limited pulled out of Sky TV, and as lenders took 100 percent control of MediaWorks. In 2013, controversy erupted when it was revealed that a journalist’s phone records had been handed to a ministerial inquiry without her consent. The move was condemned by over 300 journalists as the government’s invasion of privacy was seen as a threat to media freedom. The government also passed legislation giving extra surveillance powers to the Government Communication Security Bureau (GCSB). This represented an institutional threat to journalistic autonomy. The report also finds that the bloggers and blogosphere gained prominence and influence in relation to the commercially driven mainstream media. In October 2013, there were 280 ranked blogs in New Zealand, and the top political blogs recorded high visitor numbers. 1 Agriculture and the Emissions Trading Scheme – how do we enable farmers to respond? Friday 14th September 2018 Speech from Kiri Allan Labour Party Overview of New Zealand’s position • Our Government is committed to supporting global action on climate change. Due to New Zealand’s emissions profile, we are in a unique position to be a global leader on emissions reductions and adaptation in the agricultural sector. • Our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has called climate change the ‘nuclear free moment of this generation’. • Recent international agreements – the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals are reflections of the global community’s attitude towards addressing climate change. • We are working to provide the right research, tools, frameworks and policies that will enable enable farmers to reduce their on-farm emissions and switch to more sustainable land-use practices. This work helps to ensure our products have the environmental credentials and status needed to sustainably add value to the sector. • Our belief is that we need to reduce agricultural emissions, while maintaining strong economies and productive and resilient sectors capable of meeting the food demand of an exponentially growing world population. • Another 2.3 billion people will join the global population by 2050, and the increasing food demand means we will need to produce more food in the next 50 years, than in the past 500. • Agriculture contributes to climate change, producing about 12% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and is heavily effected by climate change with more extreme weather events, unpredictable yields and variable productivity in both crop and livestock sectors. -
