Our partners arrived at Cyprus on Sunday 4th of November 2018, and families of the students from Cyprus were expecting them to be hosted. We must mention at this point, that all students from partner

2

1ST TRAINING OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS – ERASMUS+ PROGRAM – GEOPARKS OF EUROPE – NOVEMBER 2018 countries were hosted to families of the students from Cyprus team, so as to be able to learn more about the culture and the way of life of Cypriot students. The purpose of the hosting by Cypriot families aimed to give the chance to the partner participants to know more about other cultures and experience the daily habits and way of living of the Cypriot students.

The actual training program began the next day on Monday 5th of November 2019 and continued till Wednesday 7th of November. From now on the report will be presented day by day in order to have all the information of the seminar gathered together. The program of each day will be distinguished by the different activities of students and discussion for the teachers. In Appendix 4 you can find the whole program of the meeting day by day.

Monday Morning first day of Seminar in Cyprus The students from partners countries arrived at Agios Ioannis Lyceum at 7.30 in the morning with their hosting students and they had their first activity. It was an ice breaking acquittance game in order to know each other names and also to learn few things about participant country. The activity was performed with the aid of a ball, as it is described in the photo, with a small variance, allowing the students to say their name and their country, and if the ball was passing to them for a second time, to say some more information about themselves or anything that the the other participants wanted to learn. After this ice breaking activity, we randomly formed our teams, giving them precise instructions of what was anticipated from them in order for them to know what they had to do in the following days of the seminar. 8 teams of students were created with approximately 4 students in each team and 2 teams with 3 students (all students that they were taking part in the seminar were 30 so 2 teams had 3 students). In each team one theme was given (as it was written in the program) which they had present in our last meeting of the seminar. The themes given to each team was: 1. Troodos Unesco Global Geopark 2. Geopark Troodos: A historical review of Cyprus 3. Vein and volcano stones in Troodos

4. Geology in Cyprus Geopark of Troodos 5. Fauna and Flora in Troodos 6. Our experience in Geopark of Troodos 7. Erasmus Plus Program – meeting in Cyprus – Our experience 8. Culture in Cyprus what we like and what we didn’t like

After the first ice breaking activity, the formation of the teams, the instructions regarding their presenting theme , the analysation of the photo contest regulations and the rock designing activity, the general presentation of the seminars schedule was introduced and explained to all the students. Then the students went to see experiments in Chemistry and Physics laboratories that were connected with Geochemistry and chemical reaction. In Chemistry the experiments introduced the students to earth and ground reactions and in Physics they saw and participated in experiments regarding the circular momentum and spinning of a body, physical phenomena that we have in earth due to circular motion of the earth every 24 hours.

After the presentations we had a half an hour coffee break with some sweets and snacks and after the break Dr Efthimios Tsiolakis made a presentation about the Geopark of Troodos giving us one first view of the whole science that is involved in a geopark. Generally, we learned about Troodos Geological Treasure from photos and explanations of the representation.

Troodos Geological Treasure (http://www.troodos-geo.org/cgibin/hweb?-A=177&-V=troodos) The Troodos mountain range is an ophiolite, a term used to describe a group of igneous rocks which make up the oceanic crust. Troodos is part of a very ancient section of oceanic crust which was uplifted to its present position due to the collision of the African and Eurasian Tectonic Plates and the subduction of the former beneath the latter. It is considered the most complete and best-studied ophiolite in the world. On Troodos one finds all the groups of ophiolite rocks, consisting of the following stratigraphic units, in ascending order: (a) Mantle sequence and cumulates (b) Plutonic rocks (c) Intrusives (d) Volcanics and pillow lava flows (e) Chemical sediments such as umber The Troodos ophiolite is oval-shaped, its longer axis having a NW-SE orientation. The mountain range is dome-shaped with Mount Olympus as its highest point (1,952m). Although stratigraphically, the ultramafic plutonic rocks are the lowest, topographically they are found at the highest point of the mountain range with progressive outcroppings by the overlying layers, forming an annular shape, the result of the intense erosion that followed the uplifting of Troodos above sea level, with Mount Olympus at its epicentre. A magnet to researchers from all over the world Due to its global uniqueness, Troodos acts as an incomparable magnet for the many foreign universities that visit it regularly for the purposes of scientific research and education. Throughout the entire area of the Geopark there are superb examples of all the ophiolite rocks where researchers and students can examine, study and observe all the geological processes that have occurred and are still occurring in the depths of the oceans and are directly linked to the movement of the tectonic plates.

1ST TRAINING OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS – ERASMUS+ PROGRAM – GEOPARKS OF EUROPE – NOVEMBER 2018

Monday Evening 5th of December 2018 – Cyprus Night Teachers of the Cyprus Team with the help of parents of the students of Cyprus team, prepared a special Cyprus Menu for the welcoming dinner and our Cyprus night for our partners. The menu had a lot of traditional dishes as are described in this report for our Cyprus night. Menu of the night 1. Souvla with pork meat “Souvla” is one of the most popular dishes in Cyprus. The preparation and cooking of souvla is usually a man’s job, women have to set the table and prepare the salad. Similar in look to but different in taste is souvla, comprising large chunks of meat slow-cooked on a large skewer over a charcoal barbeque, called foukou in Greek. The meat is neck and shoulder of either pork, lamb, or chicken. This food is seen as the king of meat dishes in , as it’s very common that a group of friends gather to cook souvla, while drinking beer, snacking and chatting as it takes a good hour or two. It’s a popular meal eaten on Easter Sunday to celebrate the end of fasting and can be accompanied with a range of other dishes, usually potatoes and salads.

13

1ST TRAINING OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS – ERASMUS+ PROGRAM – GEOPARKS OF EUROPE – NOVEMBER 2018

2. Halloumi is probably Cyprus’ most famous product, with its popularity extending to many countries throughout Europe and the Middle East. Distinguishable by its mild salty flavour and rubbery texture, the delicacy has become a favourite for chefs across the globe, appearing in dishes as diverse as lamb roast and halloumi fries. The cheese is produced by combining a mixture of goats and sheep milk, before being set with rennet. This is an unusual practice due to the absence of acid- producing bacteria in any part of the process, a standard for most dairy products. Halloumi’s high melting point means it can be easily fried or grilled or served cold alongside freshly sliced watermelon; the perfect summer dinner.

3. Koupepia (stuffed vine leaves) and gemista The Cypriot variety of the uses minced meat, rice, onions, tomatoes and a mixture of herbs. This filling is then carefully wrapped in fresh vine leaves. A village favourite, this dish can be found commonly throughout Greece, Turkey and the Middle East. Koupepia are usually made in large batches and can be frozen to be enjoyed at a later time – the dish is in every Cypriot grandmother’s menu. The stuffing of vegetables, called gemista, is a Cypriot tradition which extends beyond vine leaves, with peppers, tomatoes, onions, courgettes and even courgette flowers often being cooked in this manner.

4. Makaronia tou fournou Popularly known in Greece as , the Cypriot version differs for its use of cheese, which is no other than halloumi, sprinkled with dry mint. Large pasta tubes, béchamel sauce and a tomato-y minced pork are the main ingredients used. Thin curls of cheese are often sprinkled on the top to give it a crispy crunch. The dish is usually prepared in a large oven pan. When served as a main dish, this Cypriot delicacy usually comes with a side of salad.

14

1ST TRAINING OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS – ERASMUS+ PROGRAM – GEOPARKS OF EUROPE – NOVEMBER 2018

5. Cypriot keftedes, Patates tou Fournou and Salad Meatballs are traditional in almost all cuisines around the world. I have to apologise to everyone though as Cypriot meatballs - keftedes- are the best haha! I mean come on! To those that have tried them you know what I am talking about and to those that haven’t then this is a great opportunity to understand what I mean. It’s an easy recipe and the ingredients are quite basic but the taste and texture are out of this world. The only downfall is the time they take to be fried but hey the taste makes up for that.

6. Sweets “Daktyla” aka Ladies Fingers and Pourekia The name of this dessert is a bit weird. It’s not a Halloween recipe, but it sure sounds it. “Daktila” is a type of Cypriot dessert. Imagine fried in pastry dough and then drenched with syrup, and that’s basically what you have with this dessert. People can choose to make the syrup different ways, with orange blossom water, and with rose water. This recipe though is a very classic syrup, using cinnamon and orange rind, and uses a decent amount of cinnamon in the nut mixture to add some flavor. So, it is very “baklava” in taste. The dessert is typically enjoyed as a sweet with Greek coffee. They are quite addictive, and usually end up eating about 5 in one go. They are very sweet, and biting into one and tasting the syrup, which means these are usually good soon after they are made before the pastry becomes dry.

Tuesday 6th of November 2018 (Troodos Geopark and Caledonia Trail in Troodos) Our scheduled program for Tuesday included a visit in Geopark of Troodos with guided tour in Geopark Visitors Center.

Troodos Geopark Visitors Center The Troodos Geopark (an area of 1.147 km2) Visitor Centre is located in the old Asbestos mine (Amiantos mine), an area with enormous historical value which now hosts an extraordinary botanical garden with information about the flora of the area, a seed bank of endemic species and also a plethora of evidence for the past mining activity and the community which once flourished there. The Geopark Visitor Centre is situated in the newly restored elementary school of the abandoned asbestos mine. The building is an impressive listed structure and an example of fine architecture with historic characteristics and features such as its fireplaces, one in every room, and a beautiful internal yard.

At the entrance of the Geopark Visitor Centre the visitors are welcomed by an amazing geological garden consisting of all the rock types encountered in the area, in stratigraphic order, representing the Troodos ophiolite sequence. An outdoor classroom is operated in the garden of the centre, where interactive lessons and demonstrations are delivered to visiting students and the general public. Impressive rocks and minerals, a moquette of the geology of the area, depicting sites of geological importance and interest (faults, mines, geo-trails, etc.), informational panels and a conference room where the visitor can watch documentaries, of the significance of the geology of the Troodos mountain range are only some of the exhibits in the visitor centre.

The Geopark Visitor Centre also hosts exhibits of the abandoned Asbestos and Chromite mines, representations of an ancient pyro-metallurgical furnace for the production of copper and a gallery of the last century for the exploitation of sulphate deposits.

Finally, on the way out, a shop gives the opportunity to the visitor to buy handcrafted art products and other geo-products, made by raw materials encountered in the Troodos area, as well as an eco-tourism guide and the Troodos documentary movie.

We are confident, that a visit at the Geopark Visitor Centre will be an interesting educational journey for the visitor providing an inside to the geological uniqueness of the Troodos area, the most complete piece of oceanic crust on earth. Troodos has been and still is the scientific inspiration of geoscientists from all over the

18

Wednesday 7th of November last day of the training. On the third day of our seminar there was a separation of activities for students and teachers. Everybody had to do a lot of work about the seminar and the teachers had to decide the form of the activities which will follow after the first seminar in Cyprus. The aim was for all partners to be prepared for the following seminars as hosts and to prepare activities in their schools for students according to the aims of the program. Students Program Students arrived early in the morning at 07:30 with hosting students from Cyprus because they had 3 activities to do. The first activity was to distinguish their 2 best photos taken the previous day so as to be able to take part in the photo contest. Students went in an ICT classroom and they used computers so as to have better view of their photos, process them in their way and to decide which they wanted to compete with. Then the teachers group received 50 photos from all participants students to vote for the winners. The photos were anonymous to the teachers. The voting results from the photo contest were announced to the students they were placed in winning order. The winning photos in the photo contest of Caledonia nature trail received a small present from the organised committee of the seminar. Photos and results of the photo contest 1st place (Anaïs Cailloux, Guadelupe) 2nd place (Stephani Ioannou, Cyprus) 6th place (Rodoula Theoti, Cyprus)

28

1ST TRAINING OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS – ERASMUS+ PROGRAM – GEOPARKS OF EUROPE – NOVEMBER 2018

All photos were good and when the director of Lyceum Agios Ioannis saw the winning photos asked from the coordinator of Erasmus program to organise a photo exhibition in our school with all photos of the contest. So, at the end a Photo Exhibition will be done in Lyceum in Cyprus including all the photos that took part in photo competition of the students. In the photos you can see the winning photos of our contest with the names of the students that they got first prices.

After their first activity students went to art classroom for their second activity which was to design their own rocks that they pick from Troodos mountain so as to have memories of our seminar and also to be creative and to show their artistic talent. The theme of the designing was of course the Troodos mountain and things that gave them inspiration about the whole training during the program. In the photos that are followed you can see some of the rocks that students designed in this activity.

Students after they finish with their second activity, they went to ICT classroom for another one and half hour to prepare their presentation in team work as the teams were created in the first day of our seminar. Each group of students had to prepare a different presentation in themes that were given. Students had to prepare 5 minutes presentations. Teachers program Same time on Wednesday that students were making the above activities, teachers had to decide a lot of themes about the whole project. Teachers had a meeting in the library of the school for more than 3 hours and through this meeting, a presentation of the webpage of the program was done from general coordinator of the program, Mrs Magdalena Szewczyk (the link of the webpage of the program http://www.geoparks.erasmusproject.eu/). Also, in this meeting we voted for the photo competition that we had among the students who participated in the seminar. Teachers had to choose amongst 50 wonderful photos (in our school we will publish a diary with this photos for next year and also we will do a photo exhibition from all the photos of the contest) a work that it was difficult and hard due to the fact that at the end we had 4 voting’s due to same number of votes. In the following table you can see the voting of the 10 participant teachers from partners countries (teachers from Cyprus didn’t vote due to the fact that they prepared the competition and they knew about the owners of the photos)

Also, in this final meeting of the participant teachers we mentioned and decided the following aspects about our following work of the program: • An evaluation Survey will be given to all participants after each meeting so as to have the results of the evaluation of each meeting in the webpage of the program. The evaluation survey must be completed from all participant students and teachers in each meeting and it will be prepared by the general coordinator of the program Mrs Magdalena Szewczyk from Poland. • Mrs Magdalena Szewczyk also mentioned that we must have good communication and respond to emails in order to have a fluent communication between us. • A report after each meeting with all activities and photos must be done from each partner that organises the activity, so as to be able to have all the reports in our webpage and each one of us to know and to remember all things that were discussed during that meeting. These tasks have to be done from all of us foe each meeting as well as to present all the activities that we will have to do in our schools. A report with the program and the activities and what is been done and how this reflected in students and teachers that were participating in the seminar, will also be included. • All coordinators must ensure that we will have good dissemination of the results of the project and the results of each meeting so as to be able to have good general dissemination of our program. We will have all the articles to be published online (if they are printed, to scan them and send them to general coordinator to put them in the webpage writing in the file the author of the article, the date that it was published and the link if it was online publishing of the article) • Also all partners must give information’s to the other partners about all the activities that are organised for the program and also include relative photos of the activities and short description of them and how this has impact in the aims of the program. • Also, in each meeting the organising school of the meeting, must prepare a video with photos of the meeting and then to be published in YouTube so all the links to be shown in our webpage • All partners schools must organise in their schools the followings till December of 2018: o An Erasmus Corner were the activities of the program will be shown and can be reached from all students and teachers of the school
