Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, sent a congratulatory letter to His Beatitude Sviatoslav on the occasion of the anniversary of his enthronement.
"These days I thank God for the gift of your vocation, which you felt at a young age, when the world around you tried to deny the existence of God and despise the faith, persecuting all who were close to the Church," Cardinal Bassetti wrote in a letter. Despite the brutal persecution in the Soviet Union, His Beatitude Sviatoslav "managed to preserve the gift of vocation" by becoming "the Head and Father of the martyred Church, which is admired in the whole world." "Your Beatitude, continuing the line of your holy predecessors, I wish you to lead your flock to green pastures full of God's grace, so that the people of God may consume the incorruptible food that leads to the Kingdom of God." Victor Yelensky, Doctor of Philosophy, theologian and politician, spoke about these ten years in the life of the UGCC and Ukraine in general in the program "Good Conversation" with Halyna Babiy. "His Beatitude Sviatoslav became the Head of the UGCC at a very difficult time," Mr. Victor recalls. “In 2010-2011, the Yanukovych’s administration tried to suppress the UGCC, to close UCU. There were many actions and movements aimed at marginalizing our Church. The then presidential administration wanted the new Head of the UGCC to be much more accommodating and less principled than his predecessor, Lubomyr Husar. But, as we can see, this never happened - on the contrary, during these ten years, the social role and significance of the UGCC has greatly increased." Victor Yelensky noted the continuation of the traditions and values of the UGCC; he observed that His Beatitude Sviatoslav's predecessor was not only His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar, but also such titans of the Church as Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky and Josyf Slipyj. "Why Sviatoslav? In 2011, I was among those who asked themselves this question,” Mr. Viktor Yelensky admits and adds, “Similarly, in 1991, when Myroslav Ivan Cardinal Liubachivsky returned to Ukraine, we asked him, why, in his opinion, Andrei Sheptytsky had chosen Josyf Slipyj as his successor. Liubachivsky then answered: Sheptytsky was sure that Josyf Slipyj could not be broken. At that time, it was the most important thing for the Church. I think that His Beatitude Lubomyr and the bishops who gathered for the Electoral Synod in 2011, also saw in Bishop Sviatoslav something that should be very important in the coming years. And I don't think they were wrong." The UGCC Department for Information Why (in some years) Easter Is Celebrated on Different Dates In determining the day to celebrate Easter, early Christians faced a dilemma. It was known that Christ was crucified after Passover and therefore the date for Easter should fall after Passover. The date for Passover is the fourteenth day of Nisan (the first month of the Jewish ecclesiastical year, about the time of the vernal equinox), a fixed date in the Jewish lunar calendar. This date, translated to the old Julian or solar calendar that Christians used, became a floating date that fell any time in a week, and therefore made the date and day for Easter change yearly. To add to the confusion, early Christians felt that Easter should always fall on a Sunday. This was resolved at the Council at Nicaea in 325 A.D. when the date for Easter was set as the Sunday that fell after both the fourteenth of Nisan and the vernal equinox. Further controversy in the date of Easter began in 1582 A.D. with the introduction of the Gregorian calendar. This calendar was not accepted by all countries, and even today, there are many churches that still use the old Julian calendar.
Currently, churches on the Gregorian calendar calculate Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon that comes on or after the vernal equinox (March 21). This means that Easter can fall within a 35-day period between March 22 and April 25, inclusive. Churches that still use the old Julian calendar occasionally have Easter on the same Sunday as those on the Gregorian calendar, but through the different methods of calculation may celebrate Easter anywhere from one to five weeks later.
