FOCUS ON THE ARTS Ohio Boychoir seeks community support for its second trip to Ukraine by Alexander B. Musichuk

Readers of The Ukrainian Weekly are undoubtedly aware of the astonish ing efforts of the American youngsters in Ohio Boychoir. Following successful concert toursto many European coun tries, including France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Latvia and Russia, they embarked on an unbelievable tour to Ukraine in 1989. Travelling through Romania just a few months before that revolution, they went on to Chernivsti, Lviv, Kiev, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytsky and Kamianets-Podilsky. The rest is now amazing history. Their concerts were great emotional experiences for Ukrainians who were moved to tears to hear these ail-Ameri can boys sing in Ukrainian. "With this day, together with the father and head of the Particular Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, truth and justice, based on love and on the words of Christ's Gospel, are returning to U- kraine. Today, once more we publicly confess our holy Catholic faith; that we have been, are and will be, and that no power on earth can extirpate from our hearts this ancestral faith of ours and this true Christian love. "Today we bear witness before the world with our many thousand presence that this cathedral of St. George has been Greek Catholic from the time of its erection, and shall remain so forever." He was welcomed by Lviv Oblast Chairman Chornovil, who spoke of the role of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in western Ukraine. "The Greek Catholic Church has withstood four decades of existence in the underground, thanks to the pa triotism that guaranteed ties with the people: both with common workers and particularly peasants as well as with Ukrainian intelligentsia. I would like to stress the role of patriotic intelligentsia that has managed to preserve the very idea of faith, the idea of the national Church through the dark years of totali tarian rule. Without these efforts the revival of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church would have been impossible," Mr. Chornovil said. Mr. Chornovil recalled the events of last August when the Cathedral of St. George was returned to Ukrainian Catholics, due to the efforts and appeals of the democratic government of the Lviv region. He then concluded his remarks, saying: "Welcome home, your Beatitude. Glory to Ukraine."

Welcome by Sterniuk Archbishop Sterniuk then greeted the patriarch of the Ukrainian Greek- Catholic Church, as the leader of millions of Ukrainian Catholics throughout the world. Dressed in a regal cardinal's cape, the Ukrainian Catholic patriarch spoke to those ga thered, who cheered him with shouts of "Glory." Throngs await their spiritual leader at the entrance to the St. George Cathedral complex. 10 THE UKRAINIAN WEEKLY SUNDAY, APRIL 7,1991 No. 14
