Sunday Tropar, tone 3: Let the heavens be glad, let the earth rejoice,* for the Lord has done a mighty deed with His arm.* He trampled death by death; He became the first born of the dead;* He saved us from the abyss of Hades* and granted great mercy to the world. Tropar, tone 4: O Princes and glorified in Christ,* you monastics and martyrs,* and you staunch confessors from every age of Christian Ukraine,* pray to Christ our God, that he gaze with a merciful eye on our nation* and grant it the grace to endure in faith,* and that the souls of its devout faitihful, who honor your sacred memory,* may be saved. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen! Kondak, tone 4: You shine with bright lights,* O divinely inspired righteous ones of our church,* and by your encouraging example* you serve the communities of the faithful throughout the Christian world.* Therefore, in humility we bow our heads before you,* as we thank the great and all gracious God,* who made you our mediators in heaven* and the intercessors for our souls. Prokimen, tone 3: Sing to our God, sing; sing to our King, sing. Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations; shout unto God with the voice of joy Epistle: A reading from the Letter of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Romans. (6: 18 - 23) Brothers & Sisters! Freed from your sin, you became slaves of justice. (I use the following example from human affairs because of your weak human nature.) Just as formerly you enslaved your bodies to impurity and licentiousness for their degradation, make them now the servants of justice for your sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you had freedom from justice. What benefit did you then enjoy? Things you are now ashamed of, all of them tending toward death. But now that you are freed from sin and have become slaves of God, your benefit is sanctification as you tend toward eternal life. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Alleluia Verses: In You, O Lord, have I hoped that I may not be put to shame for ever. Be a protector unto me, O God, and a house of refuge to save me.

Gospel: Matthew 8: 5 - 13 At that time as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him with this request: “Sir, my serving boy is at home in bed paralyzed, suffering painfully.” He said to him, “I will come and cure him.” “Sir,” the centurion said in reply, “I am not worthy to have you under my roof. Just give an order and my boy will get better. I am a man under authority myself and I have troops assigned to me. If I give one man the order, ‘Dismissed,’ off he goes. If I say to anoth- er, ‘Come here,’ he comes. If I tell my slave, ‘Do this,’ he does it.” Jesus showed amazement on hearing this and remarked to his followers, “I assure you, I have never found this much faith in Israel. Mark what I say! Many will come from the east and the west and will find a place at the banquet in the kingdom of God with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, while the natural heirs of the kingdom will be driven out into the dark. Wailing will be heard there, and the grinding of teeth.” To the centurion Jesus said, “Go home. It shall be done because you trusted.” That very moment the boy got better.

Communion Hymn: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! 6 Sunday, June 27 - 5th Sunday after Pentecost

Tropar, tone 4: When the disciples of the Lord learned from the angel the glorious news of the resur- rection* and cast off the ancestral condemnation,* they proudly told the apostles:* "Death has been plundered! Christ our God is risen* granting to the world great mercy." Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen! Kondak, tone 4: My Saviour and Deliverer* from the grave as God has raised out of bondage the chil- dren of earth* and shattered the gates of Hades;* and as Master, He rose on the third day. Prokimen, tone 4: How great are Your works, O Lord: You have made all things in wisdom. Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul; O Lord my God, You are exceedingly great. Epistle: A reading from the Letter of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Romans. (10: 1 - 10) Brothers and Sisters! My heart's desire, my prayer to God of the Israelites, is that they may be saved. Indeed, I can testify that they are zealous for God though their zeal is unenlightened. Unaware of God's justice and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the justice of God. Christ is the end of the law. Through him, justice comes to everyone who believes. Moses writes of the justice that comes from the law, “The one who observes the law shall live by it.” But of the justice that comes from faith he says, “Do not say in your heart, 'Who shall go up into heaven?' (that is, to bring Christ down), or 'Who shall go down into the abyss?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).” What is it he does say? “The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach). For if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Faith in the heart leads to justification, confession on the lips to salvation. Alleluia Verses: Poise yourself and advance in triumph and reign in the cause of truth, and meek- ness, and justice. You have loved justice and hated iniquity.

Gospel: Matthew 8: 28 - 9: 1 At that time as Jesus approached the Gadarene boundary, he encountered two men coming out of the tombs. They were possessed by demons and were so savage that no one could trav- el along that road. With a sudden shriek they cried: “Why meddle with us, Son of God? Have you come to torture us before the appointed time?” Some distance away a large herd of swine was feeding. The demons kept appealing to him, “If you expel us, send us into the herd of swine.” He answered, “Out with you!” At that they came forth and entered the swine. The whole herd went rushing down the bluff into the sea and were drowned. The swineherds took to their heels, and upon their arrival in the town related everything that had happened, includ- ing the story about the two possessed men. The upshot was that the entire town came out to meet Jesus. When they caught sight of him, they begged him to leave their neighbourhood. Then he reentered the boat, made the crossing, and came back to his own town.

Communion Hymn: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

7 5th Sunday After Pentecost: At one time or another in our lives, we have all had to deal with the emotion of fear. Perhaps we can remember how we were afraid of the dark and how our mother or fa- ther would have to lead us into the dark room and turn on the light to show us that there was really nothing in the room that could harm us. As we think about the things were are afraid of, or the circumstances which arouse fear in us, we realize that what we are actually afraid of is that we do not know what to expect. We always feel uncomfortable with the unexpected or the unknown. As we hear about the miracle which Christ performed in the town of the Gerasenes we always sit in judgment of the town's people and are amazed at why they begged Christ to leave their town after the miracle which he had performed. However, the town's people were not Jewish but Gentile. The Gentiles were not looking for a Savior. They had never heard of Christ, let alone realize that he was the Son of God. But they were very much aware of the two possessed men who attacked people as they passed by and they knew that no one could control them. And all of a sudden, some man, whom they had never seen before, comes along and has complete control over the demons. Although we would find it marvelous if someone came along who could control the world around us, we would, nonetheless, feel very uncomfortable around that person if we did not know about the Christ and the power of God. This is why the Geresenes begged Christ to leave them. They did not understand him and they could not comprehend his power and authority over everything. Many times we, too, tail to understand God's ultimate control over the Universe. We become frightened and intimidated when we hear about corruption in the world and in the events around us. We feel as though everything is out of control. However, nothing could be farther from the truth. Eve- ry little thing that happens is under con-trol of God. Evil does not belong in this world. We belong to God and the world belongs to both us and God. When we go out of town on a trip or to a foreign country which we are unfamiliar with, we feel like displaced people; foreigners. This is the same relationship which evil has with our world. In our world evil and demons are dis-placed creatures which do not belong here. The pigs, being the lowest and most un-clean of all the animals in the Jewish mind, rejected the demons and ran over the cliff and drowned. Our world was created good without evil in it. We must be careful not to reject Christ's power as the Gerasenes and the Israelites did. We reject Christ's power when we fail to accept his forgiveness and his mercy. We reject Christ's power when we deny ourselves the opportunity to make advances in our holiness. We reject Christ's power when we begin to question the things he does and the things he lets happen. Questioning is very good and healthy for us. How else can we learn about God and His ways? But we must remember to not let our questions turn into judgments of God. We must be open enough in our hearts and in our minds to accept his answers when we question Him. Faith means being able to accept God's answers without even having to ask them. 8

11 CANADA'S BISHOPS ACCOMPANYING INDIGENOUS DELEGATION TO ROME

The Catholic Bishops in Canada have gen- uinely heard the sincere invitation to en- gage wholeheartedly with the past and are deeply committed to take truly mean- ingful active steps together with Indige- nous Peoples in view of a future filled with greater respect and cooperation. The recent discovery of children's remains at a burial site of a former residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia remind us of a tragic legacy still felt today. With the strong encouragement of Pope Francis, the Bishops of Canada have pledged true and deep commitment to renewing and strengthening relationships with Indigenous Peoples across the land. In recent years, regional and diocesan listening circles have taken place across the country in order to hear the stories from local Indigenous communities and their hopes for the future. Mutual listening is the beginning of our common efforts to bring about shared and long- lasting reconciliation, authentic healing and bridge building.

In conversation with Indigenous people and communities, both at the local and national levels, and bilaterally with the First Nations, Métis and Inuit national organizations, the Bishops, sponsors of this project, have been preparing, for over two years now, a delegation of Indigenous people to meet with the Holy Father to foster meaningful encounters of dialogue and healing. This pastoral visit will include the participation of a diverse group of Elders/Knowledge Keepers, residential school survivors and youth from across the country. The event will likewise provide Pope Francis with a unique opportunity to hear directly from Indigenous Peoples, express his heartfelt closeness, address the impact of colonization and the implication of the Church in the residential schools, so as to respond to the suffering of Indigenous Peoples and the ongoing effects of inter- generational trauma.

The global pandemic caused by COVID-19 has stalled this project; however, the Bishops remain committed to moving forward with the delegation prior to the end of 2021, in compliance with international travel guide- lines.

The delegation to the represents an important step on the journey of reconciliation and shared heal- ing for Indigenous Peoples and the Church in Canada. Pope Francis, in his 6 June 2021 Angelus message, spoke about the shocking discovery of children's remains at the former Kamloops residential school and, while con- veying sorrow and solidarity, emphasized the importance of "walking side by side in dialogue and in mutual respect in the recognition of the rights and cultural values of all the sons and daughters of Canada". It is our hope that these forthcoming encounters - and the important collaboration and partnership that has support- ed the planning - will lead to a shared future of peace and harmony between Indigenous Peoples and the Catholic Church in Canada. http://archeparchy.ca/news_details.php?new 12 GRATITUDE: Special THANK YOU goes to all St. Basil’s volunteers! June 20th, 2021 When we speak of a "vocation", we usually think of a "calling" to the religious life.... to become a or monk. But this is not -so! Christ calls each person to fol- low him in a choice of different states of life. This in- cludes not only the religious life, but also to the married life or the single state. Regardless of our calling, we are to be — workers and witnesses for Christ. Fatherhood is a vocation. In fact, God calls most men to this voca- tion. When a man accepts marriage and parenthood, he assumes not only its joy and pleasures, but also its responsibilities. God expects a father to cooperate with Him. This means a father accepts the obliga- tion to teach his children Christ’s way.... the way of love and good example, One of the best gifts a father can give his children is to give himself... .his time and love. These are need- ed in order that children grow up into well-balanced adults. To give a good Christian family atmosphere, it is necessary that spiritual leadership comes from both father and mother. On this Father's Day, express your gratitude to your father. Assure him of your prayers and thanks for having assumed and fulfilled his important role according to God's plan. If your father is already deceased, pray that God may have mercy on his soul and grant him a blessed repose and render eternal his memory. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!!! Father’s Day Prayer Lord, please bless our fathers, these men who mean so much to us, who are great- ly responsible for who we are and who we are becoming. Bless them for having the courage to do what’s necessary to keep us out of trouble, for making us do the right thing, for helping us build our character, even when it makes us angry; and bless them for pushing us to do our best, even when they just want to love us. Bless our fathers for being our protectors, for leading us through stormy times to safety, for mak- ing us believe that everything will be all right and for making it so. Bless our fathers for quietly making a living to provide for those they love most, for giving us food, clothing, shelter and other necessary and not so necessary material things, for unselfishly investing time and money in us that they could have spent on themselves. Bless our fathers, Lord, for saving some energy for fun, for leading us on adventures to explore the outer reaches of ourselves, for making us laugh, for being our playmates and our friends. Bless them for being our secure foundation, our rock, for holding on tight to us...until it’s time to let us go. 13 Happy Father’s Day!! Children’s A bible quote that we should reflect on today Bulletin #13: and everyday is “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Ephesians 6 :1

Dads are great peo- ple, they are teach- ers, mentors, spiritu- al leaders, coaches, and even friends. We should love our dads and show them our love, knowing that they are a gift from God and they show us how much God loves us.

Here is a craft for you to work on, and give your dad today!

14 Depression and Faith

Depression is more than just the occasional sadness which many people experience from time to time. It is an illness characterized by persistent sadness, fatigue, and hopeless- ness that restricts a person’s ability to carry out their nor- mal daily activities. It can contribute to relationship prob- lems, physical pain, and illness.

If you or someone you know is suffering from depression, you should know that depression is a serious condition which is very treatable and often curable. Research indicates that a combination of therapy, medication and spiritual support often produces the best results.

In an address to a Vatican conference on depression, St. Pope John Paul II noted that "depression is always a spiritual trial." He said people suffering from depression need help "to rediscover their self-esteem, confi- dence in their own abilities, interest in the future, [and] the desire to live." For them, "as for everyone else," the Pope noted, "contemplating Christ means letting oneself be 'looked at' by him--an experience that opens one to hope and convinces one to choose life."

In their 2018 pastoral letter “Hope and Healing,” the Catholic bishops of California acknowledged that men- tal illness “is a source of deep suffering for many.” As Christians, the bishops wrote, “we believe that Christ’s suffering and death on the cross gives our anguish meaning” and “our Catholic faith does not promise a life free from suffering or affliction.” For that reason, “We should not expect that prayer, Scripture reading, or the sacraments, will cure mental disorders or alleviate all emotional suffering. While the Christian faith and the sacramental life of the Church offer us the hope and the spiritual strength to endure whatever suffering God permits, we recognize that not all afflictions can be avoided and not all illnesses can be cured."

The bishops concluded: "We have the duty as Christians to reach out to the sick, to accompany them and to do all we can to heal or diminish their suffering. As the body of Christ, we are called to help alleviate the burdens that stem from mental afflictions.”

Prayer Against Depression (St. Ignatius Loyola)

O Christ Jesus, when all is darkness and we feel our weakness and helplessness, give us the sense of Your presence, Your love, and Your strength. Help us to have perfect trust in Your protecting love and strengthening power, so that nothing may frighten or worry us, for, living close to You, we shall see Your hand, Your purpose, Your will through all things. https://waterloocatholics.org/catholics-with-depression 15

Donna Korban, Representative for CHAM, Ministry of Care 16 “A sin against the unity of Church is one of the greatest sins in Church, personal and Christian life”, His Beatitude Sviatoslav Today we are praying for the unity of Christians, particularly in the context of our Decade of the Missionary. Contemporary world does not trust a Christian homily as it sees that Christians are split in between and contradict each other. Thus, Christ instructs Christians to be all one so that the world may believe. Otherwise, the world will skeptically accept a homily of the Gospel of Jesus. The Father and Head of the UGCC His Beatitude Sviatoslav highlighted in his homily on the Sunday of the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council. The Head of the UGCC pointed at a special feature of today’s extract from the Gospel, where the dialogue between the persons of the Holy Trinity is being held. The Hierarchical Prayer of Jesus Christ reveals an inner life of the Holy Trinity.

Today the Church is commemorating the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council which promulgated Symbol of Faith (Creed) and affirmed faith in the deity of Jesus Christ. The Head of the UGCC men- tioned that a resolution of any Church council is not imposed by the majority or minority as it tends to happen in the Parliament or other democratic institutions a person lives in.

“During the last meeting of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC Pope Francis reminded us that it is not enough to have the Synod, it is important to be such. Since it is not a Parliament but a moment of listening to the Holy Ghost and its power penetrates the participants gathered around. The Unity of the Church is the icon of unity of the persons of the Holy Trinity”, added His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

In his homily the Head of the UGCC also reminded that this year the Church commemorates 425 years since the Union of Brest. He emphasized: “not so much with words as with the power of the Holy Spirit we have to affirm that there is one God, one faith and one baptism, as apostle Paul tells us”.

The UGCC Department for Information 17 HOMILY OF THE HOLY FATHER (fits perfectly for 4th Sunday—June 20th) Lviv 27 June 2001 1. "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (Jn 15:13). This solemn statement of Christ echoes among us today with particular eloquence, as we proclaim Blessed a group of sons and daughters of this glorious Church of Lviv of the . Most of them were killed in hatred of the Christian faith. Some under- went martyrdom in times close to us, and among those present at to- day’s Divine Liturgy there are some who knew them personally. This land of Halytchyna, which in the course of history has witnessed the growth of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, has been covered, as the unforgettable Metropolitan Yosyf Slipyi used to say, "with mountains of corpses and rivers of blood". Yours is a living and fruitful community which goes back to the preaching of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, to Saint Vladimir and Saint Olga. The example of the martyrs from different periods of history, but especially from the past century, testifies to the fact that martyrdom is the highest measure of service of God and of the Church. With this celebration we wish to pay homage to the martyrs and to thank the Lord for their fidelity. 2. With this evocative rite of beatification, it is likewise my desire to express the whole Church’s gratitude to the People of God in Ukraine for Mykola Charneckyj and his 24 companion Martyrs, as well as for the Martyrs Teodor Romzha and Omeljan Kovch and for the Servant of God Josaphata Michaëlina Hor- dashevska. Just as the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies in order to give life to the new plant (cf. Jn 12:24), so too did the Blessed offer their lives so that the field of God would bear fruit in a new and more abundant harvest. 3. The Servants of God who are today inscribed in the Book of the Blessed represent all categories of the ecclesial community: among them are Bishops and , monks, nuns, and lay people. They were test- ed in many ways by the followers of the infamous Nazi and Communist ideologies. Aware of the suffer- ings which these faithful disciples of Christ were undergoing, my Predecessor Pius XII, sharing in their anguish, expressed his solidarity with those "who are persevering in faith and resisting the enemies of Christianity with the same unswerving fortitude with which their ancestors once resisted". He praised their courage in remaining "faithfully joined to the Roman Pontiff and their Pastors" (Apostolic Letter Orientales Ecclesias, 15 December 1952: AAS 45 [1953], 8). Strengthened by God’s grace they travelled the path of victory to the end. This is the path of forgiveness and reconciliation, the path that leads to the brilliant light of Easter, after the sacrifice of Calvary. These brothers and sisters of ours are the representatives that are known out of a multitude of anonymous heroes – men and women, husbands and wives, priests and consecrated men and women, young people and old – who in the course of the twentieth century, the "century of martyrdom", under- went persecution, violence and death rather than renounce their faith. How can we fail to recall the far-sighted and solid pastoral activity of the Servant of God, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi, whose cause of Beatification is proceeding and whom we hope to see one day in the glory of the Saints? We must refer to his heroic apostolic activity if we are to understand the humanly inexplicable fruitfulness of the Greek-Catholic Church of Ukraine during the dark years of persecution. 4. In my youth I myself was a witness of this kind of "apocalypse". "My priesthood, even at its beginning, was in some way marked by the great sacrifice of countless men and women of my generation" (Gift and Mystery, p. 39). Their memory must not be lost, for it is a blessing. We admire them and we are grateful to them: like an icon of the Gospel of the Beatitudes which they lived even to the shedding of blood, they are a sign of hope for our times and for the times to come. They have shown that love is stronger than death. In their resistance to the mystery of evil, the strength of faith and of the grace of Christ was able to shine brightly, despite human weakness (cf. 2 Cor 12:9-10). Their unconquered witness has shown itself to be the seed of new Christians (cf. Tertullian, Apol., 50, 13: CCL 1, 171). Together with them Christians of other confessions were also persecuted and killed on account of Christ. Their joint martyrdom is a pressing call for reconciliation and unity. This is the ecumenism of the martyrs and witnesses to faith, which indicates the path of unity to the Christians of the twenty-first century. Continued on p. 19 18 HOMILY OF THE HOLY FATHER Lviv Wednesday 27 June 2001 May their sacrifice be a practical lesson of life for all. This is certainly not an easy task. During the last centuries too many stereotyped ways of thinking, too much mutual resentment and too much intoler- ance have accumulated. The only way to clear the path is to forget the past, ask forgiveness of one another and forgive one another for the wounds inflicted and received, and unreservedly trust the renewing action of the Holy Spirit. These martyrs teach us to be faithful to the twofold commandment of love: love of God, love of our brothers and sisters. 5. Dear priests, religious, seminarians, catechists and students of ! For you in particular I wish to emphasize the shining example of these heroic witnesses to the Gospel. Like them be faithful to Christ unto death. If God blesses your land with many vocations and if the seminaries are full – and this is a source of hope for your Church – that is surely one of the fruits of their sacrifice. But it is a great responsibility for you. For this reason I wish to say to those in charge: give careful attention to the training of future priests and of those called to the consecrated life, in line with the principles of the Eastern monastic tradition. On the one hand the value of celibacy for the Kingdom of Heaven ought to be emphasized, on the other the importance of the Sacrament of Matrimony with its connected responsibilities ought to be made clear. The Christian family – as the Council reminds us – is like a "domestic church", in which parents must be the first proclaimers of the faith to their children (cf. Lumen Gentium, 11). I encourage all the Church’s sons and daughters to seek with constant commitment an ever more genuine and profound knowledge of Christ. May the clergy be always eager to give serious evangelical and ecclesial formation to the laity. May the spirit of sacrifice never fail among Christians. And may the courage of the Christian community in the defence of those hurt and persecuted never grow weak, as it pays great attention to discerning the signs of the times in order to respond to the social and spiritual challenges of the moment. In this context I wish to assure you that I will follow with interest the development of the Third Ses- sion of the Synod of your Church, which will take place in 2002 and will be devoted to the Church’s reading of the social problems of Ukraine. The Church cannot remain silent when the safeguarding of human dignity and the common good are at stake. 6. "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (Jn 15:13). The martyrs declared Blessed today followed the Good Shepherd to the end. May their witness not be simply a boast for you: rather, may it become an invitation to imitate them. In Baptism, every Chris- tian is called to holiness. Unlike the newly beatified martyrs, not all are called to undergo the supreme trial of shedding their blood. But everyone is entrusted with the task of following Christ with daily and faithful generosity, as did Blessed Josaphata Michaëlina Hordashevska, co-foundress of the Hand- maids of Mary Immaculate. She lived her daily dedication to the Gospel in an extraordinary way, in the service of children, the sick, the poor, the illiterate and the marginalized, often in difficult situa- tions marked by suffering. May holiness be the desire of all of you, dear Brothers and Sisters of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. On this journey of holiness and renewal, may you be accompanied by Mary "who ‘precedes’ us all at the head of the long line of witnesses of faith in the one Lord" (Redemptoris Mater, 30). The Saints and Beati, who gained the crown of justice in this land of Ukraine, and the Beati whom we celebrate in a particular way today, all intercede for you. May their example and protection help you to follow Christ and faithfully serve his Mystical Body, the Church. Through their intercession, may God pour upon your wounds the oil of mercy and consolation, that you may be able to look with confi- dence to what awaits you, knowing in your hearts that you are the children of a Father who loves you tenderly. God has given us a beautiful day. How can we not thank him? Dear brothers and sisters, I greet you cordially, in this last event of my particular and moving pilgrimage among the people of God in Ukraine who have gathered in such great numbers. I thank you for your prayers, especially for the choral chants which are also prayer. Thank you for your goodness and sincerity, thank you for your love and fidelity to the Apostolic See. I carry all of you in my heart and I am with you and embrace you in prayer. May God bless you. 19 IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY SCHOOL Applications for enrolment at Immaculate Heart of Mary School are now being ac- cepted.
