David Motiuk П’ята неділя після П’ятидесятниці Fifth Sunday after Pentecost Today’s Gospel is one of the most tragic of any and all of Scripture because it really, in a nutshell, shows how people’s lives are lost. They’re lost by just living their life, not thinking of God, doing what they want to do, and then they die. And most of them will not know what they have missed until the Judgment. What a tragedy. This tragedy is happening in our lives too. Every time that we choose the wrong way, we are like the people or the Geresenes because we are losing an opportunity for sanctity, for blessedness. We must, when we can, do what is right. Because there are so many times we do what is wrong, we must seize upon the moment. The Lord came so that we would no longer be sinners. But we must answer the question every day: What are we to do with Him? Those who do not love God answer it in such a way as to say, Go away. Not in so many words. But in the way they live their lives and their priorities what they think is important and what they do, they say, Go away. Those who love God, they beg Him to stay. " (Євр. 12, 1-2а). Під час пастирського візиту Святішого Отця Івана Павла II в Україну було беатифіковано українських новомучеників. Празник священномученика єп. Миколая Чарнецького і двадцяти чотирьох співмучеників та священномученика Омеляна Ковча призначено святкувати 14 червня (за григоріянським стилем — 27). 1 Почитання святих — це справді неоціненний скарб і багатство Христової Церкви. І ствердження святости тих чи инших її членів є ще одним видимим знаком славної та сповненої могутности Божої присутности серед людей. Адже ми віримо в Бога, Який не тільки створив світ з нічого і премудро облаштував його, але стверджуємо також і те, що у Своїй силі й розумі Він ніколи не перестає піклуватися Своїм творінням. Ми віримо в те, що Господь, одного разу ставши людиною для нашого відкуплення і визволення від гріха, продовжує і сьогодні вирівнювати стежки цілого людства тими чудесами і знаками, які Він чинить через тих, на кому видимо спочиває Його величне уподобання. Ми живемо в час, коли вірі, яку ми сприйняли як сини і дочки Української Греко- Католицької Церкви, загрожує велика небезпека. Чужий духові християнства, сповнений ненависти і ворожости світ, такий привабливий динамікою своєї калейдоскопічно-невтомної мінливости, напористо вривається до наших спраглих Божого миру і лагідности сердець, сіючи розбрат, підозру, сумніви, непевність, брехню та зраду. Як вистояти серед усього цього безладу, як не піддатися спокусі, як затримати у своїх безсмертних душах думку про Бога та віру в Його безконечне милосердя і справедливість? Це питання повинен ставити собі справжній християнин сьогодення, який серйозно замислюється над власною відповідальністю перед Богом за долю майбутніх поколінь. І відповідь на нього, як це нерідко буває, самому важко відшукати. Будучи тільки людьми, ми відчуваємо часом повну безпорадність, а думки чи волі Бога нам часто не дозволяє пізнати та прірва, яка відділяє нас, немічні творіння, від нашого Творця.

    Byzantine Monthly Menaion Volume Three: November Metropolitan Cantor Institute Byzantine Catholic Seminary Pittsburgh, PA Foreword A Menaion is a liturgical book which contains the changeable parts of Byzantine divine services for a given month. The volume in your hands is the third of a series of twelve books for use in Byzantine Catholic parishes. Each day is provided with the following material: (1) Synaxarion (brief life of the saints remembered) (2) Troparia and Kontakia (3) Prokeimena and Alleluiaria (4) Communion Hymn. On major feasts, the proper antiphons (when there are any) and the Magnification and Irmos (appointed to take the place of It is truly proper) are also included. Texts which are contained in the Faithful’s Book published by the Byzantine Catholic Church are reproduced with their musical settings from that book. Those texts were translated by the Inter-Eparchial Liturgical Commission, and then set to plainchant by the Inter-Eparchial Music Commission. Many of the Troparia contained in this volume of the Menaion are, in fact, common texts (i.e., they are used on more than one feast). These texts, too, come from the work of the IELC/IEMC, as are all the Prokeimena and Alleluiaria and Communion Hymns. The texts of the Troparia and Kontakia that are not from the above-mentioned source are almost always taken from the Order of Matins published by the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great, and we acknowledge these texts with gratitude. This volume is intended to be used annually. Because of this, cantors must use the Typikon of the Metropolitan Church to discern how materials from the Menaion are to be combined with the Sunday Ochtoechos.

It left an indelible mark on the millions who came out to see him, as well as on his relations with the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church that has been in communion with the Vatican See for just over 500 years. It was the 94th visit in the 24 years of the papacy of the Polish holy father, but one that his personal secretary called “a long held dream,” one which he had talked about for “11, 12, even 14 years.” In many ways it was a trip home. Although Pope John Paul II was not born in Ukraine, his Ukrainian mother was born outside of Drohobych. And while this was his first trip to Ukraine as the head of the Catholic Church, he had spent time in the western part of the country in his youth and had been stationed there during his military serv- ice.
