The origins of the Ukrainian Catholic Church lie in the time when much of present-day Ukraine formed part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was then, in 1596, that for a variety of reasons, many of the Orthodox bishops of the region decided to accept communion with Rome.(1) After almost four hundred years the resulting Union of Brest remains a contentious subject.(2) The new "Uniate" Church formally recognized the Pope as Head of the Church, but maintained its traditional Byzantine or eastern rite, calendar, its right to ordain married men as priests, and its right to elect its own bishops. -

The Holy See
The Holy See MESSAGE OF JOHN PAUL II TO CARDINAL LUBOMYR HUSAR ON THE OCCASION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE UKRAINIAN GREEK CATHOLIC CHURCH To my Venerable Brother Cardinal Lubomyr Husar Major Archbishop of Lviv for the Ukrainians 1. On the occasion of the important assembly of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church which is taking place in Lviv from 30 June to 6 July, a year after my unforgettable Pastoral Visit to this country, I would like to address my cordial greeting to you, to my Brothers in the Episcopate and to all the participants. The theme chosen for your meeting is especially significant and of great importance: "Christ, Source of the Rebirth of the Ukrainian People". With fraternal affection I join this beloved Ecclesial Community in invoking the Holy Spirit, so that he may grant you a deeper knowledge of Christ and that your assembly's work may effectively imbue the faithful with new courage in witnessing to the message of salvation. In my first Encyclical Redemptor hominis, I pointed out that Christ must occupy the central place in the life of the Church and of every Christian. Indeed, he is the Redeemer of man, the Redeemer of the world. In Christ and through Christ "God has revealed himself fully to mankind and has definitively drawn close to it; at the same time, in Christ and through Christ man has acquired full awareness of his dignity, of the heights to which he is raised, of the surpassing worth of his own humanity, and of the meaning of his existence" (n. -

Nataliya Lefmenko Mountain Tourism in Ukraine and Poland Mountain cliffs that seem launching straight into the blue sky, deep dark forests with light green islands of fields and blue eyes of lakes, looking boiling but ice cold rivers and blue smoke of tour- ists’ fire – all this is the spirit of mountains. Though, it's not only about the wild and beautiful nature – mountains is a unique cultural region where contemporary way of living reveal thousands years old folk traditions and rituals. ZNZE WSIiZ 2/2006 (2), ISSN 1689-9229, s. 18-22 Let’s look into the beauty of the mountains in Slavske (Ukraine) and Zakopane (Poland) and development of tourism there. Slavske is the one of the most popular ski resort in the Ukrainian Carpathians, situated 130 km southwest of Lviv. Zakopane district is considered as the most attractive tourist region in the southern Poland, about 100 km to the south of Krakow, close to the border with Slovakia. It lies in a valley at the foot of the Tatras, the highest mountains in Poland. Slavske is the heart of Boykivshchyna region, a place that welcomes real connoisseurs of beauty, people who desire to feel themselves part of this wonderful world anytime during any season. Slavske is situated in the beautiful valley of the Opir river – land full of legends – local people still know whereabouts of old Drevlian tribe prince Sviatoslav's grave, a prince who died in the battle over here in 1015. Some researchers think that settlement raised near the 10th century, but its name has an ancient Slavonic origin of Slavka River or with glorious fighters of prince Sviatoslav. -

The Lviv-Volyn Coal Basin remains being the main fuel-pow- er base of the western regions of the Ukraine up to now. At the same time, against the background of the planned removing of mines from service and reduction of explored reserves of coal, the necessity arises to solve the question of the basin's development in the future. Its up-to-date expansion is also connected with the development of the coal seams trom the deep horizons. We have studied the commercial coal potential and character- istic properties of morphology of the coal seams of the deep horizons of the Lviv-Volyn Coal Basin, including the Kovel coal-bearing area. To the deep horizons we attribute the parts of the section of the Carboniferous thickness that enclose the coal seams located at depths below the working coal seams. They are of Tournaisian-Serpukhovian age and belong to the lower (bog-marine) coal-bearing formation. The purpose of investigations was to determine the most perspective commercial coal seams of the deep horizons of the basin and their characteristic properties. It was noted that within the limits of the workable deep horizons of the basin the coal seams 3 υ0 and υ6 are widely distributed. We have used a complex of investigations based on the formation analysis: morphological analysis of coal seams, -
