Knights of Columbus of St. Mark Parish, Plano Texas

Grand Knight’s Message

Fall is here and we are at full throttle with all our usual activities and some new ones. Entertainment Pass- books, Plano Balloon Festival, Hikes for Life, VA BBQs, Recruiting Sunday, Parish Community Carnival with Bingo, Life Chain & Rosary, and the Pro-Life Golf Tourna- ment. What am I missing? Oh, yes, the Hispanic Knights Committee inaugural picnic (rained out but to be rescheduled). And that barely gets us into November. I speak with a lot of other Council officers around the country and I guarantee you there aren’t many that have as much on their plate as 6065. This is a good reminder of our mission and how many people are af- fected by our efforts and count on them…and how we must be sure we meet those expectations. Communications and Commitment are two extremely im- portant concepts I would like to reaffirm as I sense we are missing some of each in our regular routines. We pass around sign-ups at our meetings and a lot of members fill them out with sincerest intentions. Then at times they aren’t re- minded in a timely manner by the appropriate chairperson. Of course, I’d like to think one would make note on their personal calendar that they committed. And I’d like to think that chairperson would make every effort to keep the volunteer- ing members informed of developments, timing, and schedules. It seems at times we aren’t as sharp as in the past in these areas and I ask each and everyone of you (I include myself as my work travel puts me in that same position some- times).to make an extra effort to step up our commitments, remember when we have, and be sure we communicate as the event approaches. Our Entertainment Passbooks sales are off pace with past years. Part is due to the increased cost this year, and part is due to the reduced exposure we have had because of the very necessary attention to the parish financial needs.

http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 This makes our upcoming weekend sales efforts all that more critical. The more hands we have holding up Passbooks and the more voices promoting them, the better. Take advantage of the opportunity to remind people of all the charitable activities that Passbook sales support. Use the Directory to refresh yourselves on what those charities are. We welcome Harrison Calhoun to our ranks. He made his First Degree on September 17 and we look forward to seeing him at our Business Meeting Octo- ber 4. We will have one or two visiting Knights from other councils looking to transfer so let’s show them our usual hospitality. F.S. Greg Fisher has sent out twenty-nine – yes 29! - “Intent to Suspend” letters. Hopefully this will stimulate some additional payments. We have a goal of nineteen new members for 2012-13, the challenge more than doubles with these potential losses. Let’s all do our best to encourage any of these members to get current. We have lots of opportunities in the next six weeks to ask non- Knights to consider joining. Share your enthusiasm! It’s contagious!

Council will hold another "after-the-Masses" Entertainment Book sale at St. Mark's during the weekend of Oct. 6 and 7. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at the October business meeting. “Passbook Rudy" is only asking you to give up 30-45 extra minutes out of your Saturday evening or Sunday morning...... come 15-20 minutes BEFORE the start of the Mass you normally attend to help sell to those attending that preceding Mass and to the "early arrivers" for your Mass, then stay 20-25 minutes AFTER your Mass ends to sell to those leaving and for those coming to the next Mass. Rest assured, it will be a fun and engag- ing experience as you get to know more of your Brother Knights and get to inter- act with the many friendly parishioners of St. Mark's. And you will help YOUR Council.

th We had our 14 annual barbecue at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bonham, TX on Saturday Sept. 29th. This hospital serves US military veterans in north Texas and neighboring states and the barbecue is a way to say thank you on behalf on the community to the veterans who are resident patients at the hospital and adjacent nursing home. The event is in keeping with the Patriotic order of the 4th degree. Veterans were present who served our country in World War II, Korea, the , Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. 150 hospital pa- tients, nursing home residents, and hospital staff were served hamburgers, hot dogs, beans, fruit, cake, cookies, donuts, home made ice cream, and sundry other items. They enjoyed it immensely and many went through the line several times. We served 260 hamburgers and 200 hot dogs. A raffle of telephone calling cards was held, which is always a big hit with the vets. Because of the rain we served the food in the hospital dining room, but were able to grill the hamburgers and hot dogs outside under the covered grills. Participating were a total of thirty-two 4th degree (Christopher Columbus Assembly and Fr. Michael McGivney Assembly) and 3rd degree Knights and fam- ily members. Also Sir Knight Pat Haney arranged for 28 children and 4 adult chaperones from the St. Mark’s Youth Group to participate. They were a big help in serving the food and pushing wheel chairs for the veterans. A huge donation of all the meat was received from Gary Hirsch of Hirsch Meats (Parker and Alma), all the ice cream from Henry Gentry of Henry’s Homemade Ice Cream (Parker and Independence), donuts from Golden Star Donuts (Campbell and Coit), and cigars from Rick Baldelli of Two Brothers Cigars (1414 Ave. K). Thanks to all the knights involved in arranging the donations. Generous cash donations were received from the councils: 6065 ($200), 11716 ($100), 7850 ($100), and 13520 ($100). Gift Card donations for food were received from Sam’s Wholesale Club (Coit and Frankford)), Costco (Central Expressway), Costco (Dallas Parkway), Tom Thumb (Parker and Independence), and Tom Thumb (Park Blvd. and Pre- ston). Please patronize our sponsors with your business. Bill and Sandy Ptacek donated a large portion of the hamburger and hot dog buns.

On September 25th Sir Knights Alex Hernandez, David Duff, John Donovan (& wife Lyn), and Chuck Neubecker visited Las Colinas Country Club to view the closing day of the Warrior Golf Tournament. The DFW USO invited military vet- eran Knights because of the long association of the Knights and the USO in our quarterly Greet the Troops visits to DFW airport from 2004-2011. The Warrior Open is an annual program of the George W. Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative, which highlights the courage of U.S. military person- nel and places an enduring spotlight on the sacrifice troops and their families make for our freedom. The DFW USO coordinated many of the arrangements for

President George W. Bush with Council 6065’s Official Photographer, Alex Hernandez, at The Bush Center Warrior Open on September 25 at Las Colinas Country Club. 22 wounded veterans assembled for the invitation only 36-hole event. The Warrior Open recognizes the sacrifice of veterans severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

6 http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 the tournament. The Warrior Open was two inspiring days of play, bringing wounded warri- ors together for a 36-hole competition. This Open highlighted the bravery and commitment of our servicemen and women and honored the sacrifice troops and their families make for our freedom. It was a very inspiring event for the Knights who took part and some were able to get their photos taken with former President Bush.

A Veteran provides inspiration to all as he participates in The Bush Center Warrior Open on September 24 and 25.

The Call Still Remains: We Need "Unneeded" Cell Phones, Inkjet Cartridges, and Small Electronics

As Bill Ptacek announces during the 4th Degree Report at every Council business meeting, the Christopher Columbus Assembly #2266 collects the subject items to help support Special Olympics. They also collect laser-jet and toner car- tridges and hand-held electronics (e.g., iPads, tablets, GPS devices, E-Book Read- ers, video games, etc.). These items are taken to a company called EcoPhones, which pays for the items they recycle based on a price list it provides. The items are priced in accordance with their working condition or useful- ness. The newer the item/equipment, the higher the price paid. You can place the small items in the tote box in the Ushers’ Room in the back of St. Mark’s, and lar- ger items (like laser-jet cartridges and video cameras) should be given to Bill at the Council meetings. Please place your old items in the tote box and also see if you can collect these types of items from your employers and/or clients. The money paid by Eco- Phones helps fund Special Olympics activities in Texas through the State K of C Special Olympics Fund. Many companies just throw these items away, so let’s put them to good use for a very worthy cause. If you have any questions, call Bill Ptacek (972-424-6507) or Paul Krusac (972-516-0659). "Can you hear me now?" "Is that MY phone ringing?" "Call me up some time and we'll talk!" These and countless other clever phrases could be applied to the box of used cell phones held by Tom Heicken. But to be serious, the phones were brought in by Tom and Doug Heck- mann in response to the monthly request by Bill Ptacek for "used, broken, and/or out-of-service" cell phones and certainly all of these phones in the box fit that crite- ria. So the answers are: "NO, I can't hear you!" "NO, that is not MY phone ringing!" "Sorry, these phones don't work, ya' got one that does?" 8 http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012

GLOW Stick sales got underway Friday night at the Plano Balloon Fest as (l-r) Pete Maurer, Phil Reinkemeyer, Matt Flanagan, Randy and Marie LeGrand, and Rudy Profaizer got "suited up and ready" to hit the pavement and drum up sales.

Long-time chairman John Wheeler, who has headed this project since its inception "umpteen" years ago, was out of town on business, so Phil took over the reins for Friday night and Steve Cosgrove led the team on Saturday.

Mary Dolan Cosgrove, age 2, is the newest and proba- bly youngest GLOW Stick recruit. Mary is the grand- daughter of Steve Cosgrove.

13 http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 An Informative Update from the Ukranian

For the past several years, Council 6065 and Assembly 2266, as well as many individual Brother Knights, have supported the activities of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Catholic University, and seminarians who have attended UCU. The following story and pictures attest to the good work and leadership of Father , one of the co-founders of UCU, who was or- dained as a and appointed to serve Ukrainian Catholics living in French- speaking areas in five countries in western Europe. Brother Knight Chuck Neu- becker, who travels to the and is our contact with UCU, has provided the story and pictures to help all of us better understand the workings of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and to further reinforce that our support is bearing fruit and is greatly appreciated.

UCU Rector Ordained Ukrainian Catholic Bishop Tuesday, August 28, 2012

On August 26 the rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), Fr. Borys Gudziak, PhD, was ordained bishop in St. George’s Cathedral in in a ceremony led by His Beatitude , head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church (UCC). Bishop-elect Borys Gudziak made a profession of faith, affirming the truth of the teachings of the Church. According to church canons, the decree of the naming of Fr. Borys was read in church. On July 21, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI blessed the decision of the Synod of of the UCC and appointed Fr. Borys Gudziak the titular bishop of the city of Carcabia. He was appointed apos- tolic for Ukrainian Catholics in France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, and Switzer- land. The head of the UCC placed the mitre on the newly-elected bishop’s head and gave him his episcopal staff. Greeting those present, His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk acknowledged: “The of Fr. Borys is happening at an interesting movement, when we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the transfer of the mortal remains of Servant of God Patriarch to St. George’s Cathedral. It is Josyf Slipyj who is for us today the example of a true bishop, who among the people of God reveals to us the one good teacher.” According to the words of His Beatitude Sviatoslav, in his time Josyf Slipyj was able to move the young man Borys, who step by step walked the path to establishing the patriarch’s university, gradually fulfilling his dreams, creating the Lviv Theological Academy and then UCU. This path, in His Beatitude’s words, was the struggle of Bishop Borys to give all to the poor and to follow the one good teacher, Who is Jesus Christ. “May Patriarch Josyf be for you the example for your episcopal ministry, the example of a great giant of the Church of Christ

14 http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 and the Christian Spirit,” said the head of the UCC to the new bishop. “In this ordination God is summing up your life to the present time and wants to make you a leader to eternal life of all those who will follow you, and there will be millions of them.” His Beatitude Sviatoslav thanked Bishop Borys for his tireless, demanding work in Ukraine: “UCU will always be connected with your person. Today, allowing you to go to France, we know that you are going there, but you will not abandon us. You will not abandon the church in Ukraine and our Catholic university.” Newly-ordained Bishop Borys Gudziak thanked all present and those who were involved in the formation of his vocation: “Today I received vestments, signs of the high ecclesiastical re- sponsibility of a call to ministry. But it is important to remember that the Lord gives us one ex- ample – to humble ourselves. God, Who created this universe, becomes closer to each of us, becomes near, enters into our life, our death, and loves each of us. Let us remember, however high our ideas may be, that the good and unimaginable Lord, the Creator of all and our closest friend, embraces all this. Thank you so much for your love, and praise be to God, Who gives this love to each one of us so that we will share it.” So said Bishop Borys in his sermon at St. George’s Cathedral.
