Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 Mainsail Knights of Columbus of St. Mark Parish, Plano Texas Grand Knight’s Message Fall is here and we are at full throttle with all our usual activities and some new ones. Entertainment Pass- books, Plano Balloon Festival, Hikes for Life, VA BBQs, Recruiting Sunday, Parish Community Carnival with Bingo, Life Chain & Rosary, and the Pro-Life Golf Tourna- ment. What am I missing? Oh, yes, the Hispanic Knights Committee inaugural picnic (rained out but to be rescheduled). And that barely gets us into November. I speak with a lot of other Council officers around the country and I guarantee you there aren’t many that have as much on their plate as 6065. This is a good reminder of our mission and how many people are af- fected by our efforts and count on them…and how we must be sure we meet those expectations. Communications and Commitment are two extremely im- portant concepts I would like to reaffirm as I sense we are missing some of each in our regular routines. We pass around sign-ups at our meetings and a lot of members fill them out with sincerest intentions. Then at times they aren’t re- minded in a timely manner by the appropriate chairperson. Of course, I’d like to think one would make note on their personal calendar that they committed. And I’d like to think that chairperson would make every effort to keep the volunteer- ing members informed of developments, timing, and schedules. It seems at times we aren’t as sharp as in the past in these areas and I ask each and everyone of you (I include myself as my work travel puts me in that same position some- times).to make an extra effort to step up our commitments, remember when we have, and be sure we communicate as the event approaches. Our Entertainment Passbooks sales are off pace with past years. Part is due to the increased cost this year, and part is due to the reduced exposure we have had because of the very necessary attention to the parish financial needs. http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 This makes our upcoming weekend sales efforts all that more critical. The more hands we have holding up Passbooks and the more voices promoting them, the better. Take advantage of the opportunity to remind people of all the charitable activities that Passbook sales support. Use the Directory to refresh yourselves on what those charities are. We welcome Harrison Calhoun to our ranks. He made his First Degree on September 17 and we look forward to seeing him at our Business Meeting Octo- ber 4. We will have one or two visiting Knights from other councils looking to transfer so let’s show them our usual hospitality. F.S. Greg Fisher has sent out twenty-nine – yes 29! - “Intent to Suspend” letters. Hopefully this will stimulate some additional payments. We have a goal of nineteen new members for 2012-13, the challenge more than doubles with these potential losses. Let’s all do our best to encourage any of these members to get current. We have lots of opportunities in the next six weeks to ask non- Knights to consider joining. Share your enthusiasm! It’s contagious! Vivat Jesu’ Ron Schoof Grand Knight 2 http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 Entertainment Book Sales Oct. 6 and 7 Council will hold another "after-the-Masses" Entertainment Book sale at St. Mark's during the weekend of Oct. 6 and 7. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at the October business meeting. “Passbook Rudy" is only asking you to give up 30-45 extra minutes out of your Saturday evening or Sunday morning...... come 15-20 minutes BEFORE the start of the Mass you normally attend to help sell to those attending that preceding Mass and to the "early arrivers" for your Mass, then stay 20-25 minutes AFTER your Mass ends to sell to those leaving and for those coming to the next Mass. Rest assured, it will be a fun and engag- ing experience as you get to know more of your Brother Knights and get to inter- act with the many friendly parishioners of St. Mark's. And you will help YOUR Council. 3 http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 14th Annual VA Barbecue Honors Veterans th We had our 14 annual barbecue at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bonham, TX on Saturday Sept. 29th. This hospital serves US military veterans in north Texas and neighboring states and the barbecue is a way to say thank you on behalf on the community to the veterans who are resident patients at the hospital and adjacent nursing home. The event is in keeping with the Patriotic order of the 4th degree. Veterans were present who served our country in World War II, Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. 150 hospital pa- tients, nursing home residents, and hospital staff were served hamburgers, hot dogs, beans, fruit, cake, cookies, donuts, home made ice cream, and sundry other items. They enjoyed it immensely and many went through the line several times. We served 260 hamburgers and 200 hot dogs. A raffle of telephone calling cards was held, which is always a big hit with the vets. Because of the rain we served the food in the hospital dining room, but were able to grill the hamburgers and hot dogs outside under the covered grills. Participating were a total of thirty-two 4th degree (Christopher Columbus Assembly and Fr. Michael McGivney Assembly) and 3rd degree Knights and fam- ily members. Also Sir Knight Pat Haney arranged for 28 children and 4 adult chaperones from the St. Mark’s Youth Group to participate. They were a big help in serving the food and pushing wheel chairs for the veterans. A huge donation of all the meat was received from Gary Hirsch of Hirsch Meats (Parker and Alma), all the ice cream from Henry Gentry of Henry’s Homemade Ice Cream (Parker and Independence), donuts from Golden Star Donuts (Campbell and Coit), and cigars from Rick Baldelli of Two Brothers Cigars (1414 Ave. K). Thanks to all the knights involved in arranging the donations. Generous cash donations were received from the councils: 6065 ($200), 11716 ($100), 7850 ($100), and 13520 ($100). Gift Card donations for food were received from Sam’s Wholesale Club (Coit and Frankford)), Costco (Central Expressway), Costco (Dallas Parkway), Tom Thumb (Parker and Independence), and Tom Thumb (Park Blvd. and Pre- ston). Please patronize our sponsors with your business. Bill and Sandy Ptacek donated a large portion of the hamburger and hot dog buns. 4 http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 Paul Krusac, left, and Bill Ptacek, right, man the grills at the VA Barbecue on September 29 in Bonham, TX. 5 http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 President Bush Honors Veterans at Warrior Golf Tournament On September 25th Sir Knights Alex Hernandez, David Duff, John Donovan (& wife Lyn), and Chuck Neubecker visited Las Colinas Country Club to view the closing day of the Warrior Golf Tournament. The DFW USO invited military vet- eran Knights because of the long association of the Knights and the USO in our quarterly Greet the Troops visits to DFW airport from 2004-2011. The Warrior Open is an annual program of the George W. Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative, which highlights the courage of U.S. military person- nel and places an enduring spotlight on the sacrifice troops and their families make for our freedom. The DFW USO coordinated many of the arrangements for President George W. Bush with Council 6065’s Official Photographer, Alex Hernandez, at The Bush Center Warrior Open on September 25 at Las Colinas Country Club. 22 wounded veterans assembled for the invitation only 36-hole event. The Warrior Open recognizes the sacrifice of veterans severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. 6 http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 the tournament. The Warrior Open was two inspiring days of play, bringing wounded warri- ors together for a 36-hole competition. This Open highlighted the bravery and commitment of our servicemen and women and honored the sacrifice troops and their families make for our freedom. It was a very inspiring event for the Knights who took part and some were able to get their photos taken with former President Bush. A Veteran provides inspiration to all as he participates in The Bush Center Warrior Open on September 24 and 25. 7 http://KofC-6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 October 2012 The Call Still Remains: We Need "Unneeded" Cell Phones, Inkjet Cartridges, and Small Electronics As Bill Ptacek announces during the 4th Degree Report at every Council business meeting, the Christopher Columbus Assembly #2266 collects the subject items to help support Special Olympics. They also collect laser-jet and toner car- tridges and hand-held electronics (e.g., iPads, tablets, GPS devices, E-Book Read- ers, video games, etc.). These items are taken to a company called EcoPhones, which pays for the items they recycle based on a price list it provides. The items are priced in accordance with their working condition or useful- ness.
